Would spend more nights at local bar if they booked more Philip Glass cover bands.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:14pm Mary Wing:

Heh heh. But would it encourage more drinking or less?
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:19pm glenn:

hey, my cat's also an alien.
  Wed. 6/7/17 12:19pm Listener142985:

Oh, i can take the absinthe or leave it. All good.
  Wed. 6/7/17 12:23pm Listener142985:

Staalplaat looks like a label worth following.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 12:36pm David D:

Good afternoon, Mary and all - these sounds beautifully match the strong early evening breeze brewing outside here.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:39pm Mary Wing:

Howdy, David, it's breezy here, too.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:43pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Mary and 100%ers
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:46pm coelacanth∅:

...digging these particles
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:46pm Mary Wing:

Hi coel, glad you made it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 12:48pm doctorjazz:

Hi all!
Nice cover, great Velvets tune!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 12:52pm Mary Wing:

Greetings, doctorjazz, yeah, Lou himself sings with them!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

(i was thinking the dirtbombs' can't stop thinking about you should be mashed with "train kept a rollin'"...maybe all 3 then.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:08pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:15pm coelacanth∅:

i have the dickies' version...yeah, pretty much the same. (strangely not quite as good?)
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:17pm Mary Wing:

The Dickies covered this? Hmmm,..
  Wed. 6/7/17 1:17pm valerian:

Recently was getting in my car, and as I started my engine, this song came on my player, the little intro riff. Just as that happened, an older Asian woman walked out of the building and turned and shot me this look of horror and revulsion.
I felt terrible. I am sure she thinks there are jerks driving around with sound effects to insult people.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

oh and Liz Phair i have as well - same thing.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:18pm coelacanth∅:

ha! never mind.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:18pm Mary Wing:

Oh man, valerian, that's bad timing for sure.
  Wed. 6/7/17 1:19pm valerian:

it was this Seinfeldian moment, I felt compelled to prove to her that it just happened to randomly come on, but just drove away as fast as possible.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:21pm Rich in Washington:

I don't think I've ever heard any other song by The Vapors.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:23pm doctorjazz:

Great song for the multiple version treatment; (they all stick to the original pretty much, don't they? Why not, it is a great song/arrangement).
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:24pm Mary Wing:

I bought the album, Rich; it had some other good tracks on it.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:28pm coelacanth∅:

Rich (i W) i listened to that album at least 10X/week for about a year, back in the day. very well written & executed power pop-punk.
('surprised efd and Uncle M don't play more from that album)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:29pm Rich in Washington:

I will be sure to check it out. I listened to quite a bit of college & freeform radio back in the late 70s/early 80s, so maybe some songs will be familiar.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:29pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, I love Spring Collection more than Turning Japanese, actually!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:30pm doctorjazz:

I got the Vapors on some sort of single when it came out, just loved it. Didn't hear the rest of the album, though, have to check it out as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:30pm Rich in Washington:

this version's amazingly close to the original.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:30pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi folks. The college dance bars played this every Friday back in the day.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:31pm coelacanth∅:

considering the similarity here i'd bet that the (much younger) people across the room think i'm just listening to the same song over and over.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:32pm Mary Wing:

Heh heh heeeeeh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:33pm doctorjazz:

So that album seem to be out of print, at least judging by what it is selling for on Amazon. (There is a greatest hits album out there that is inexpensive).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:34pm Rich in Washington:

coelacanth∅: screw 'em. most people are too self absorbed to notice anyway. I stopped caring what people think of what I'm listening to a long time ago.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:34pm Rosie:

tuned in just in time for ?? of a kind! appreciating the relief from election fever over here (in the UK).
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:35pm coelacanth∅:

really?! how much can i get for it?! mine's in excellent condition. (i put it on cassette, as was my usual, when i realised i'd be listening to it a lot)
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:36pm Mary Wing:

My copy isn't pristine, but I don't want to sell it anyway.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:36pm Mary Wing:

Hi Rosie, let's pogo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:37pm doctorjazz:

It's not a fortune, $23 on Amazon for a used copy of the CD (but these things often sell for $5 or less).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:37pm Rich in Washington:

Heeey.. Another Vapors song!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:37pm coelacanth∅:

i don't actually want to sell mine either; but unfortunately i don't foresee ever living somewhere that has room for all my albums.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:37pm Mary Wing:

"Black jeans with tortured seams, don't mean that much to me" I love that lyric!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:38pm Rich in Washington:

This is so cool. I've always wondered, but never thought to listen to anything else by them till now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:38pm doctorjazz:

On Discogs, the vinyl version is not expensive, go figure...
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:40pm coelacanth∅:

the internet has turned $100. albums into $7. ones, unfortunately for me.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:41pm coelacanth∅:

...then again, fortunately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:44pm Rich in Washington:

The Vapors album is pretty inexpensive on Discogs Marketplace.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:45pm Rich in Washington:

I'm not sure what generates some of the redonkulous prices on Amazon. I often see records and CDs with high prices but find them for much cheaper just poking around.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:46pm Parq:

Kirsten Dunst the actress? Gonna have to go back to the 'chives for this one.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:47pm Rich in Washington:

there's a cute video for DUnst's version that popped up a while back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:48pm Rich in Washington:

I always liked that segment on SCTV with some easy listening crooner singing Turning Japanese. Decades before Richard Cheese, etc.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:48pm Mary Wing:

Yeah, Kirsten's dressed up as some blue-haired anime character, it's weird.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:50pm doctorjazz:

It's interesting, the CD is the one that is relatively expensive on Amazon, used vinyl was inexpensive, and it is inexpensive on Discogs as well (and I didn't see any CD's there at all. It seems it came out at the beginning of the CD era, maybe not many copies were released on CD?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:50pm Rich in Washington:

this is a fun show. I'm diggin' it!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:51pm coelacanth∅:

when it was new i bought "germfree adolescents" for 5 bucks new in a store. a few years later (while mine was still in new condition) a saw the same album in a store, used, for $100.00.
- now a "near new" copy of it can be had for 28+shipping.
...maybe some folks are still holding on to that plan they had to resell at a huge profit one day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:53pm Rich in Washington:

@doctorjazz: I have no idea where the inflated CD prices come from on Amazon. They're often relatively obtainable items. Sometimes they do check out as being relatively rare. I don't know if someone puts their CDs up to gauge interest but incrementally inflates the prices for some reason? I do know some Discogs sellers put things up at pumped up prices to inflate the perceived value.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:55pm Rich in Washington:

someone need to make a typical New Yorker one-panel with some yuppie bragging how he dumped his stocks and put it all in rare vinyl.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:55pm Mary Wing:

I agree, I think most sellers inflate the price to gauge interest.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:57pm coelacanth∅:

i must return to work now. hopefully the poison they sprayed outside is dry by now.
Thanks Mary
see y'all
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 1:58pm Rich in Washington:

I predict big things for this Thomas Waits kid.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 1:58pm Mary Wing:

Cheers, coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:01pm Ken From Hyde Park:

This (Tom Waits) isn't an Alphaville cover, is it?

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:10pm Rich in Washington:

I am so glad Diane's back!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:17pm Mary Wing:

Hey Jake! What's shaking?
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:18pm Parq:

Rich in WA, couldn't find one right on the mark, but I like this one. chadhuculak.files.wordpress.com...
  Wed. 6/7/17 2:21pm Listener142985:

thx for the luna--a treat
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:22pm weinstein:

Enjoying as we wire up our gig, not enough hands to keep all channels open. But great stuff!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:24pm Mary Wing:

hoo boy, I just ran down to the record library and actually found the record I wanted before this song ended!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:25pm Mary Wing:

Hi David, you're actually broadcasting live performances "live"?
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:28pm Parq:

It's just a remix away.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:29pm weinstein:

No, I probably confuse people all the time by saying that. We play live sets recorded (usually) by us.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:33pm doctorjazz:

Gimme Shelter didn't sound all that different backwards :)
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:34pm Mary Wing:

Neither do the pops and crackles, unsurprisingly. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:40pm David D:

Hey, I'm back and this Talking Heads sounds different...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:41pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Next week, Mary's next-door next-door neighbor, Kenzo, moves in at 5PM. How exciting! Whatever Wednesdays are looking pretty full in the Drummer neighborhood.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:41pm Parq:

What we need is a major "RIP Demme" re-release of "Stop Making Sense". Maybe in Imax.
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:41pm Mary Wing:

It's live, that's why, David.

Hiya Parq, by the way! Glad you made it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:42pm David D:

Thanks, Mary - looks like there a lot of reasons to hit the archive later too...
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:42pm Mary Wing:

Ken, has that officially been announced? I didn't see it anywhere...
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:43pm Rosie:

oh, didn't realise that pausing the live stream on the app means it picks up where you left it! very impressive / confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

It was in the Blast of Hot Air newsletter I received yesterday. "Ken's Last Ever Radio Extravaganza! Beginning June 14th, the show will air every Wed, 5–7pm. Hosted by Kenzo, the show will present live improvised sound collage experiments, weaving dreamy loopscapes from layered threads of found fragments, spontaneous monologues, live call-ins, and more."
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:44pm David D:

Looking forward to Kenzo's return!
Avatar Wed. 6/7/17 2:48pm Mary Wing:

Cool, I can freely announce on the air, then!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The newsletter can be found here: mailchi.mp... It also mentions Larry Grogan's Testify! show on GTDR.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 6/7/17 2:58pm doctorjazz:

Thanks, great show!
