Worse, I keep 2 months of calendar on my office wall for scheduling, so I had to put up July today, too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 12:15pm Meghan:

Hey there Brady!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 12:57pm doctorjazz:

Saw Wilco at the King's Theater-really liked the place, old style theater, really nicely renovated (not that much scheduled there that makes me want to drag into Brooklyn, though).
  Thu. 6/1/17 12:57pm βrian:

Lobster! I want!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:00pm Meghan:

The neighborhood Kings Theater is in is an odd area as well. Huge HOUSES with wrap around porches. Gorgeous.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:06pm JtotheK:

good afternoon everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:07pm Meghan:

good afternoon!
Avatar Thu. 6/1/17 1:07pm Doug Schulkind:

I will be having mega lobster in two months. Headed back to the Maine coast this summer. I will spend some of the time underwater. There is no Theme Park, however. G'day, Meghan and everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:08pm Meghan:

mmmmmmmmm, Maine lobster season..... chilly water up that ways...
Avatar Thu. 6/1/17 1:11pm Doug Schulkind:

The chilly water keeps away the (other) tourists. It can't be cold enough!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:13pm doctorjazz:

That part of Brooklyn is a bit like Ditmas Park, with old Victorians along with apartment houses. It was upper middle class, then the middle class left, became minority. Ditmas Park has gentrified, not sure about the part of Flatbush that King Theater is in, though. It probably will go the way of the rest of Brooklyn, though (the theater is probably a sign of impemding gentrification).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:15pm Meghan:

Most likely..... it's not that far out of the way....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:18pm Ike:

I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Thu. 6/1/17 1:18pm still b/p:

I know people willing to dip around here in the Maine water any day now, but even later in the season I gots to be DAMN hot to get in unless local currents bring a warming spasm close to shore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:18pm northguineahills:

Still wondering what's keeping me from listening to Slowdive's new album in full. I'd hate to spotify it, but it looks like that's my option.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:19pm Meghan:

It's pretty damn good..... I must say.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:19pm doctorjazz:

Still more Jamaican Beef Patty places than Starbucks around there...

I do like this Slowdive!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:26pm Meghan:

That sounds like a tasty thing....
Avatar    Thu. 6/1/17 1:27pm Snortley:

A whole lot of lower middle class residents of Victorian Flatbush got their homes for around 50 to 100 thou; and now find themselves worth millions.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:28pm Meghan:

imagine....... they lucked out!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:34pm Ike:

Some of those houses are totally gorgeous and there are lots and lots of trees. Jealous! (Downside: lots and lots of pirates interfering w/WFMU's signal! Gotta stream it there. Screw you, Radyo Independans, or whoever took your place! Jerks.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:36pm Meghan:

ahhhhhhhhh The joys of the WFMU signal....
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:37pm Parq:

Way digging this Colorblind.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:40pm Uncle Michael:

If you can afford a 50k house, you can't afford the taxes on a 1000k house. You have to sell whether you want to move or not. Yes, you make money, but...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:42pm Meghan:

Yeah I wonder what property taxes are on those houses...... ouch!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:43pm Uncle Michael:

Gentrification is always coercive.
Avatar Thu. 6/1/17 1:45pm still b/p:

And I've read of the disappearing, of course, long-time Brooklyn neighborhood institutions...restaurants, delis, etc...that finally take offers too good to refuse or just can't take the enveloping pressures of rising values/taxes.
A borough feature tangent: I happened to look yesterday at the brief preface to A Tree Grows in Brooklyn:
“There's a tree that grows in Brooklyn. Some people call it the Tree of Heaven. No matter where its seed falls, it makes a tree which struggles to reach the sky. It grows in boarded-up lots and out of neglected rubbish heaps. It grows up out of cellar gratings. It is the only tree that grows out of cement. It grows lushly . . . survives without sun, water, and seemingly without earth. It would be considered beautiful except that there are too many of it.”
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:45pm doctorjazz:

Property taxes in NY, if I remember correctly, don't always get updated to current market prices, so you are often paying much less than it is worth on the market. When it can really catch up, though, is on selling; under certain circumstances, you could owe capital gains, so staying put is sometimes better. (complicated business, though, there are exceptions, and exceptions to the exceptions)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:47pm Uncle Michael:

I've never lived where property values aren't reassessed or where there's rent control. It's even worse for renters. Your landlord is being taxed out, or wants to cash out and you're not going to be offered a new lease. They're waiting out tenants to sell to a condo developer...or not even waiting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:48pm Meghan:

Unlike Jersey City taxes.... ouch! I just did a quick look through Zillow out of curiosity..... They are going for 1.5 mill to 2.5 mill. 7 bedrooms and a double garage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:51pm doctorjazz:

It is even so in Westfield NJ, where I llive...political clout has to do with taxes and assessments as well. So, old Victorians that sell for >$1 million, are older than the houses built in the 70's, 80's, etc, and they are valued as less for taxes, even though they sell for so much more on the market. (the age of the houses is the justification for being valued less; newer is better and valued higher, even though the real market sees it the other way).
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 6/1/17 1:52pm Meghan:

Damn, even Pre-Forclosure Auctions are at 2 mil
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 6/1/17 1:59pm doctorjazz:

Enjoyed the show, thanks!
