Evan Doorbell  QC514-285ESS1   Options     1974  This is a #1 ESS in downtown Montreal, featuring the Canadian "Pre- 'Dial Tone First'" arrangement, which was implemented on blue Northern Centurion coin phones. I don't know whether this was a "semi-DTF" arrangement or a crude temporary DTF arrangement which allowed things like "0" to be dialed without a coin.

Avatar 7:04pm northguineahills:

Well, someone ended up in the wrong industry. Should have ended up w/ Senor Dingdong.
Avatar 7:06pm Jesse Kaminsky:

This time the bell tolls for thee!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:28pm Dave in Vermont:

I don't recall all the details but this is a fascinating episode of Radiolab that this phone stuff reminds me of.
Avatar 7:39pm Jesse Kaminsky:

@Dave, yeah that's a great episode. I love these tapes, if you want more, Evan has hundreds if not more hours of recordings of the phone systems of the 70's and 80's here: www.evan-doorbell.com
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:42pm listener james from westwood:

B-Boys, creepin' with the phreak-phreak!

How do, Jesse and all!
Avatar 7:42pm Jesse Kaminsky:

Howdy James!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:01pm David D:

I love this stuff! I'll have to go back and hear it all in the archives.
Avatar 8:02pm Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey David! I'm going a little extra innings on this phone stuff.
@Dave, Joe Engressia from that radiolab episode namechecked in that last segment
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:07pm David D:

I miss calling the time.
Avatar 8:11pm Jesse Kaminsky:

yeah I kind of miss moviephone even
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:15pm listener james from westwood:

It's just amazing how much of the inner workings of the telecom system were relatively open and available, via technical journals, for so long.
Avatar 8:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

Wait, moviephone is gone?? WTF
Avatar 8:18pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

You're making the wait for the next hacker conference feel painfully long
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm listener james from westwood:

Avatar 8:20pm Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey Kenzo! Actually, I'm not positive that it is, maybe it was me that moved on :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm listener james from westwood:

The range of tech being discussed! Hearing mercury switches earlier blew my mind. Just what you want in a workplace, a heavy metal!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm David D:

Thanks for going overtime, this is all quite fascinating.

Hi Kenzo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm listener james from westwood:

Good narrator voice, on top of being informative!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:34pm David D:

James: Absolutely, it is amazing to hear the story behind those that we usually hardly even notice.
Avatar 8:34pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I highly recommend the HOPE conference, every other summer in NYC. Always lots of us* old phone phreakers there, and always some talks/presentations/demos on the subject. *of course I've never actually done this
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm listener james from westwood:

"For informational purposes only."
Avatar 8:37pm Kenzo (Ken's Last Ever):

I mean or so I've heard
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm listener james from westwood:

As someone who all but sprinted home w/ his first smartphone so he could put a Conet numbers tone on it as the ringtone, I declare tonight's exploration into electronic mystery utterly riveting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm listener james from westwood:

(The Lincolnshire Poacher, to be precise: www.youtube.com...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm David D:

Getting curiouser and curiouser...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm listener james from westwood:

I keep thinking about the bit of electronic chatter the probe droid emits in "The Empire Strikes Back."

"But it won't be around long." (looks at smartphone) Ain't that the truth?
Avatar 8:48pm coelacanth∅:

greetings Jesse and all
Avatar 8:50pm Jesse Kaminsky:

Hey coelacanthø!
Avatar 8:52pm coelacanth∅:

i use to love all the weird shit the phones had to offer back in the day. i did record some of it too, but not nearly as much as i should've.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:52pm David D:

Wait, what about Northern Boulevard?
Avatar 9:00pm coelacanth∅:

haha i remember her voice! i wrote a song about it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm David D:

So many Long Island references - and even the operator sounds familiar.
Avatar 9:00pm coelacanth∅:

( -the recorded message voice, that is)
Avatar 9:01pm Jesse Kaminsky:

I think he lived on Long Island and Ben, not sure who Ben is exactly, lived in Queens
Avatar 9:02pm Jesse Kaminsky:

The Jane Barbe voice ghost!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:02pm listener james from westwood:

That mechanical tape drum is singing along to "O Superman."
Avatar 9:04pm coelacanth∅:

damn, i remember that sound too.
-i miss that stuff. (then again i miss a lot about older technology)
Avatar 9:14pm coelacanth∅:

i definitely had that happen. i also once got to hear, with the person i was on the phone with, both ends of someone else's conversation.
Avatar 9:15pm coelacanth∅:

(very clearly...and they couldn't hear us -cuz we tried to make them!)
Avatar 9:15pm northguineahills:

It's been a while since I've had cross-talk bleeding..
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 9:50pm northguineahills:

Who is in the Grumbling Fur Machine Time Orchestra?
Avatar 9:52pm northguineahills:

You need to do a show w/ nothing but gibberish(ish) track titles....
Avatar 9:56pm Jesse Kaminsky:

That is a really appealing dwarkhsichoffff
Avatar 9:58pm northguineahills:

danks Jesse!
Avatar 9:59pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Jesse! i have to return for what i missed.
