I have a gut feeling about turkey, and The Michael Shelley Show. Baby. Good morning all you kids out there.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:04am Listener Baby:

One could take all the 1960's bands no one has ever heard of, and still make the argument that the 60's were clearly the greatest decade for music. I give you The Bats as an example.
  11:06am clarke:

howdy all!!! baby - nice to see someone so perky so early (for west coast)!!
  11:08am clarke:

agreed that the 60's has continual frontiers
  11:09am clarke:

there is a way of being 'dated' but being also timeless
  11:09am Eddy in Australia:

I'm in the middle of Googling that Color song. Help!!!
Avatar 11:11am Michael Shelley:

Eddie - the Tim Tam king!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:13am Listener Baby:

Perky is my sur-name. Hola Clarke!
  11:15am clarke:

what i find odd is that a random song from the sixties "outlasts", say, indie rock from the 90's - that particular genre does not stand up well, over time (although at the time i liked some of it - i also delineate between indie rock and indie pop, the latter standing up better over time).
  11:16am clarke:

what's happnin' way out west??
  11:17am Frank Above:

Greetings from the road!
  11:18am clarke:

does Eddy In Austrailia have anything to do with Eddy Current Suppression Ring?? if so - KUDOS!!!
  11:19am clarke:

FRANK!! where y'at!?!
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:21am Listener Baby:

Wow. Crazy different! I love it.
  11:21am clarke:

where is this version from??
  11:21am Eddy in Australia:

Clarke: Sadly not, apart from sharing a home town.
  11:23am clarke:

eddy - that's cool enuff!!!! i guess it is fall down there?
  11:23am Stuart Rose:

Clarke, you've got a good point about 60s rock and pop compared to 90s music.
In general , I think the songwriting, the songcraft. Even second and third tier singers/groups had better melodies.
  11:25am clarke:

indeed - it is strange how the 60's (all genres and eras) transcends time
  11:26am Eddy in Australia:

Clarke: Yep, but chilly enough to feel like winter - Australian winter, not NY/NJ-level winter.
  11:26am clarke:

certainly, poplular music today draws little on that era, these days
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26am Artie Haywire:

This is Galaxie 500 at 45 rpm.
  11:27am clarke:

eddy - are you saying it snows more in australia than east coast?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28am doctorjazz:

Just LOVE this Neil!
  11:28am lloyd michigan:

Sad news. Pippa is now married.
  11:30am Eddy in Australia:

Clarke: No, the opposite! We don't see snow in the city, and our winters are very mild.

Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:31am Listener Baby:

Back to Clarke's point. I think the 1960's recordings themselves really help them stand up taller. The DIY thing in 1990's didn't help them much in the end. Can't go wrong with a real studio, a real engineer and real mics. A minor point, but important, I feel.
  11:32am clarke:

oh, yeah - i figured that, eddy!!
  11:33am clarke:

well, it is nearly IMPOSSIBLE to re-create the 60's sound, today. (as opposed to it is relatively easy to reproduce an acceptable 50's sound)
  11:34am sharok:

was that scripted with the little girl, it was a great dialogue. im 30 and when i was a little boy i used to run around with a pumpkin head screamin johnny b goode, the first rock n roll lyrics i knew
  11:34am clarke:

you just can't MAKE records that sound like the wrecking crew

yes, NOT my favorite brian.
  11:38am Frank Above:

@clarke on our way to the quaint little burgh of Fawn Grove, PA for an afternoon gig.
  11:38am clarke:

i don't think brian had much to do with kokomo, ha ha. sadly that one seems like it is on carl and mike.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:39am Listener Baby:

Frank. You've got a gig in CA> if'in you guys ever venture out that far. Which we all really hope you do!

ahh, fawn grove - i hope it is not as blustery as it is on cape, there

  11:40am Frank Above:

Thanks Baby! Although today, I'm out with a different band.

I take up space too. A lot of it.
  11:44am clarke:

yes, the production choice on Pier Pressure (and the title) is not what you would expect his 'team' to go for
  11:45am clarke:

i think that's why most fans disavow knowledge of that record, ha ha
  11:46am clarke:

but it kicks ass on the Light Album!! (except for a few tunes)

Georgie has played in Van's band for years and years.

  12:05pm clarke:

do you think that Van Gogh would have 'churned it out' if he knew it would make $?? (i think he would have).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:07pm Matt in Nebraska:

I believe my first WFMU t-shirt was a Steve Keene design.
  12:10pm lloyd michigan:

Please ask him what he thinks about the Jean-Michel Basquiat piece that sold for a record $110.5 million.
  12:10pm JakeGould:

@northguineahills: Site seems down for me as well.

Although I like this interview, I think the tangents dumping on “the art world” (whatever that means) are really not necessary. It’s kinda like dumping on “the music world.” Andy Warhol was a major part of the high art world and without him, the path of the Velvet Underground would not be the same. Ditto with tons of other art/music connections. It’s not as alienating as one thinks.

Heck, his design of The Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” album cover is high art, low art, applied art. An album cover with an actual zipper in it back then? That was an insane idea that worked.
  12:13pm JakeGould:

FWIW, Walter De Maria—pretty good minimalist/conceptual artist—was the drummer for the Primitives with Lou Reed and John Cale before the Velvet Underground came to be.
  12:13pm clarke:

but warhol made silk-screens of his prints -- this is sorta apples and oranges..
Avatar 12:14pm Michael Shelley:

Jake - sounds like we disagree

Clarke: and bananas :)
  12:15pm clarke:

  12:18pm clarke:

they didn't call it The Factory for nuttin'
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:20pm Uncle Michael:

I went to art school. In some ways it's a bullshit factory. And credentials for artist...don't get me started.
  12:21pm clarke:

i can see that, Uncle M, but also - as MS alluded to earlier, i did not learn that much in college other than how to drink "better"
Avatar 12:23pm Michael Shelley:

I also went to art school.... briefly
  12:23pm clarke:

dont get me wrong - i had a great time in college - probably TOO great!!
  12:24pm lloyd michigan:

I can't grasp the idea of even a billionaire paying $110.5 million for a painting.
  12:25pm Lin:

I think the description SK applied to himself as a folk artist is very apt!
  12:25pm lloyd michigan:

Give me dogs playing poker any day.
  12:25pm clarke:

but, art school - it seems rather a bit absurd. either you are a painter or you aren't. it is nothing that can be "TAUGHT" really...
  12:27pm clarke:

whereas you can actually learn how to play an instrument - not saying an institutional method is a 'good' way...
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:27pm Listener Baby:

  12:28pm clarke:

billy gave me a cassette of this stuff long ago - but, i need to get the vinyl...
  12:29pm lloyd michigan:

Dion and Darin both had their folk periods.

on the flip side of that dion tape was red's bar phone calls
Avatar 12:30pm Michael Shelley:

An amazing singer for sure
  12:30pm lloyd michigan:

Dion and Darin are both underrated as singers.

They're good:www.youtube.com...
  12:32pm clarke:

i think that Dion is finally getting his due - but, it has been building in the underground for a long while...
  12:33pm clarke:

you never told us where you got that Redd Kross version of downtown...
  12:33pm lloyd michigan:

Dion still claims he lost the Buddy Holly flight coin toss. He brings it up every February on Facebook.

  12:47pm clarke:

he was just a kid when he was with ely
  12:48pm JakeGould:

All I am disagreeing with is the false dichotomy of praising Steve Keene’s is somehow connected to dumping on a whole overarching view of the art world in general.

It’s like dumping on classical music in contrast to “real” rock and roll. There’s far more common ground and little need for drama/conflict. Good interview. That’s all.
Avatar 12:48pm Ken in Tucson:

Yes, Michael Shelley, that was a great band Lucinda had. Killer version of "Disgusted."
Avatar 12:49pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

  12:50pm JakeGould:

Anyway peace be with you! Good interview.
  12:51pm clarke:

btw all -- this is probably the "last lost weekend" for moi...summer season upcoming means no more weekends. i may be able to check in, but not whole shows. it has been really fun to be in the chat!! thnx!
Avatar 12:52pm Michael Shelley:

I'm disagreeing that I'm drawing that explicit dichotomy

Steve operates outside of that world and that contrast is part of the story

so I explored that - maybe not a 100% bulls-eye but I'm a human

your metaphor of classical to r&r doesnt work for me at all

but thanks for listening & putting in your 2 cents
