I do like the Miles. Although my particular soft spot is for any version of "If I Were A Bell".
  3:13am
Mike tp:

Electric Miles sometimes reminds me of Zappa WEASELSRIPPED MY FLESH. LOVE THEM OF COURSE
  3:14am
Mark R:

Welcome, gentlemen--Simon, it's been a while since I've seen you on the comments board.

Usually, when I get home from my current work schedule, all I want to do is plant myself in front of some trash TV with a tumbler of bourbon. I finished much earlier tonight, because I'm training a new guy.

Mike tp:

didn't realize If I We're Abell was 1956,pretty nice
  3:20am
Mark R:

I'm pretty sure "If I Were a Bell" stayed in the live repertoire into the Herbie/Wayne Shorter era, Mike.

pacific standard simon:

@ Mike tp - I can sorta hear that Zappa-Davis connection, though I'd bet money that neither of them ever listened to the other's records. Heard live at the Fillmore East, maybe.

pacific standard simon:

The original Miles at The Fillmore double LP was probably the first album I ever stole, ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:39am
pacific standard simon:

There's no doubt that Miles invented jazz/rock (and, by the way, FUNK) fusion, but sometimes I wish he hadn't. Except for Mahavishnu, and early Weather Report.

Mark R:

I know what you mean--similarly, I love Cream, but I hate everybody who tried to play like them and couldn't.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:42am
pacific standard simon:

Exactly.

I wouldn't want to live in a world without Lalo Schifrin's Dirty Harry soundtrack though...

@Pacific Standard Simon Try and catch Ken during his show if you can, he'll rectify it for you. My profile doesn't list previous years' donations though.

5 basses, That's some Big Bottom.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:05am
pacific standard simon:

How do you compose a jazz recording with 5 basses?

I remember picking up a copy of Fusion magazine (out of Boston) with a whole lot of raving about Leon Thomas, and having to wait years to find out what he sounded like. The universe bless the internwt.
Avatar 4:05am
Vincent Nifigance:

@BEAVO Hi Beavo.
  4:05am
Mark R:

Yeah, I don't really hear 5 basses there, but that's what the credits say--they're listed individually by track, too, so it wasn't like 5 guys played over the course of the album, but according to the credits, these 5 guys played bass ON ONE SONG!!

Hi Vince, Mark and all Music lovers in the FMU land, the jar is under the bed.

Marathoned through the 4 disc Zappa at Carnegie Hall 1971 last night. Pretty much definitive for the period.

Sounds amazing, Simon--wasn't aware of that recording!

The Muhal Richard Abrams reminds me of Zappa's Petit Wazoo compositions.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:34am

The groupie routine was mostly limited to a "She Painted Up Her Face/Half a Dozen Provocative Squats/Shove It Right In" medley. The Sofa side is the cool shit, and "Billy The Mountain " without most of the west coast references.
