This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Tonight we go deep
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:01pm Carmichael:

Love that equipment, Flash! I've played an oscillator like the one on the top right before ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:03pm doctorjazz:

OK, now to the last room, sounds like this is going to start with a BANG!
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Hi Carm! Doc! Welcome to the FINAL ROOM
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

wish I could understand this text
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:07pm David D:

It is interesting stuff!
Avatar 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Hi David D! What's the gist, if I may?

That must have been cool, Carm
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm David D:

Yes, you may! If there is any more to come, I will listen more closely and try to retain it...
Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

there's no more to come, I'm afraid. that was just a brief excerpt from the end of a half hour piece
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:13pm David D:

Well I could listen again later - I was busy doing my post-show stuff.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Don't sweat it David D!

as is the case with most of the stuff tonight, but not all, we have Conrad Plank in the mix somewhere on these first tracks. He's all over the scene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:14pm David D:

I'm always happy to help with the German...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:15pm David D:

And this is brilliant stuff!
Avatar 7:16pm Flash Strap:

This is my favorite track from Cluster pre-Forst move and Harmonia days
Avatar 7:19pm Mayuko:

Oh my god! This is so exciting!!!
Avatar 7:19pm Flash Strap:

Hi Mayuko! I'm glad you're excited! I'm excited
Avatar 7:20pm Mayuko:

& hello Flash and everyone. Just got home from work, nice to be have this musical treats for the evening!
Avatar 7:20pm Mayuko:

These pics on the playlist are just so cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:21pm doctorjazz:

I feel like I've been on another planet when I listen to this show...never know A THING about all the music. That's a good thing, I suppose, love hearing and learning about new stuff, but not so good for the self image...
Avatar 7:26pm Mayuko:

When I listen to this show I always wish this room was a physical room decorated with Flash Strap's collage art all over, and we can all physically walk into it to sit together just listening to the music.
Avatar 7:27pm hyde:

hi gang!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm David D:

Mayuko, maybe some day...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm David D:

Hi Hyde!
Avatar 7:32pm hyde:

hiya David D!
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

@Mayuko: if only you could see the room I broadcast from, because you basically just described it
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

Hi Hyde!

Don't worry, Doc Jazz, it gives me so much pleasure to play something and have it be NEW to someone. I thank you, I thank you (plus, you know a ton about a ton)
Avatar 7:35pm Flash Strap:

that track was recorded live in a decommissioned German train station
Avatar 7:38pm Flash Strap:

Harmonia is such a Good Band, my god
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm doctorjazz:

Watussi is very cool (though I don't think I could dance the Watusi to it).
Avatar 7:39pm hyde:

the best decommissioned German train station action i've ever seen is in The Train with Burt Lancaster
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

you can't if you don't try, Doc!
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

Never seen that one Hyde, is it a good flick or just a good decommissioned German train station?
Avatar 7:40pm hyde:

@doctorjazz the drum part in The Watusi is maybe my favorite drum part ever
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

now that I'm thinking of it, it would be just insanely cool to see someone do a durational watusi to Watussi
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

@Flash it's an *amazing* flick. Arthur Penn was directing it, but then he basically got fired. John Frankenheimer took over. Highly recommended.
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

whoa cool I should watch it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:44pm doctorjazz:

Time to take the show on the road (to the car for the drive home), thanks as usual, Flash! (Veterano is really cool as well, got me some record shopping to do).
Avatar 7:44pm Flash Strap:

ok now we're about to spend some Quality Time with Zuckerzeit
Avatar 7:45pm hyde:

it's fantastic. Lancaster is over 50 at the time, but he does physical work in it that is just bonkers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:46pm doctorjazz:

(when you search Harmonia on Amazon, it is under "Krautrock")
Avatar 7:49pm Flash Strap:

There are very few records I care for as much as this one. In its simplicity is a perfection almost unfathomable. I will proceed to play just slightly more material from it than I ought, considering how much stuff I have to get through tonight
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

on an unrelated but equally obsessive note, I just got every Marx brothers movie on DVD, so I got that going for me
Avatar 7:53pm geezerette:

Just got here,Evan and gang! Agree, the music is so pure and straight forward. I love good minimalism in any form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm David D:

You'd think you'd hear more ""Krautrock" on German radio, but guess what...
Avatar 7:54pm Flash Strap:

Hi Geezerette! So glad to have you on board tonight!
Avatar 7:55pm geezerette:

Thanks Evan. Glad to be here!
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

@DD: I have no idea what the contemporary German music lover's relationship to this stuff is... I know some cool cats who sort of write Can off as classic rock... I get it, but I don't get it. But this stuff hasn't been subject to the same oversaturation, I don't think, so who knows
Avatar 7:59pm geezerette:

Sugar Time :)
Avatar 8:01pm coelacanth∅:

Greetings Evan and Cool Blue Explorers
Avatar 8:02pm geezerette:

Hiya coel!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

you can hear the two sounds: Roedelius is lyrical, pastoral, tinkling like a toy box, very lovely, playful but precise; Moebius is rubbery and absurd, a little dubby, prone to dissonance and industrial sound
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

Coelacanth! Hello friendo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:03pm David D:

Well, there are surely plenty of people who listen to a variety of interesting stuff (and some even to WFMU streams!) just like anywhere else. But you will almost never hear this sort of thing broadcast, except if someone like me plays it on local community radio.
Avatar 8:03pm Flash Strap:

I love this track, how it slides in and out of wack
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm David D:

Hello geezerette and coelacanth∅!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:04pm David D:

And Melinda!
Avatar 8:05pm geezerette:

Hi, David D!
Howdy Melinda!
Avatar 8:06pm coelacanth∅:

howdy g!
Avatar 8:06pm coelacanth∅:

and David, and melinda!!
Avatar 8:07pm Flash Strap:

Hi Melinda! Wonderful, wonderful!
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

woops played the wrong track... oh well this is good too!
Avatar 8:09pm coelacanth∅:

so David, of course i could guess -and of course i could be wrong - what is on most radios in germany? mainstream? college? "underground"?
Avatar 8:10pm Flash Strap:

ok back on track... sorry had to cut that one short

only so many minutes in five hours!
Avatar 8:13pm Flash Strap:

I've always been medium enthusiastic about Guru Guru but Neumeier is such a great drummer it's insane. If you make it to the end of the show, there's a crazy track with him from 1983 I hope to fit in
Avatar 8:13pm northguineahills:

(Steps into the room), w00hoo! Most of the tracks are already clicky-starred for me! This is gonna be fun already!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:16pm David D:

Most radio in Germany is very, very commercial and mainstream. There are one or two cultural stations with classics and a variety of jazz and some interesting stuff as well, but usually with long, long reports on various issues in-between. And then there are local community stations like the one I'm at (right now in fact), where you can hear whatever the show hosts want to play or say.
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

If I recall correctly, I think I played an early live version of this track on the recent Motorik show
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm David D:

(I should have written "other interesting stuff as well".)
Avatar 8:18pm Flash Strap:

do you do your WFMU broadcasts from such a station DD? I always thought it would be cool to finagle something like that as a streamer
Avatar 8:19pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks David. that's about what i thought, though maybe slightly more dismal than i'd hoped!
Avatar 8:21pm Flash Strap:

at least they have community radio stations! those are not as abundant as they should be, stateside
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm David D:

Yes, I always broadcast from Radio Blau. Usually (though not tonight) I simulcast the first hour on FM radio here. Radio Blau then goes off the air to give way to another station on the same frequencies, while I continue on the stream from the same studio for another two hours.
Avatar 8:22pm Flash Strap:

That's pretty cool D
Avatar 8:24pm Flash Strap:

god this is a beautiful piece. this one melts ya down
Avatar 8:24pm coelacanth∅:

- this makes me wonder though... i know the commercial stuff is at least pretty bad; but is it as absolutely unbearable as most and quite likely ALL the commercial stuff in the us?
(obviously an objective opinion!)
Avatar 8:24pm geezerette:

Five hours will NOT be too much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm David D:

Yes, there are community stations, but not everywhere of course. It would be interesting to compare the situation here and in the States.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm David D:

Yes, it is unbearable. I'd tell you how unbearable but I can't bear to listen so I don't really know.
Avatar 8:27pm coelacanth∅:

haha! okay. Thanks for indulging my curiosity.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm David D:

My pleasure!
Avatar 8:29pm geezerette:

David D; you're certainly in the right place now though.
Avatar 8:32pm northguineahills:

@David D: So, not quite as bad as most American radio stations? Crap, in my listening area, only the two NPR stations are the only non-vomit-worthy stations on the air. Even the college stations were sold to Clear Channel in the early 90s.
Avatar 8:37pm coelacanth∅:

we can thank the machiavellian reagan administration for that.
there used to be a limit on how many radio stations one company may own.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:38pm melinda:

Cool, I like By This River.
Avatar 8:39pm coelacanth∅:

(& therefore there was more variety and less brainwashing and dummying-down)
Avatar 8:40pm hyde:

yay, my crap upstate NY internet decided to come back on after twenty minutes off. i guess i missed some Cluster.
Avatar 8:41pm coelacanth∅:

melinda, that song, combined with herb, was partly responsible for me not bothering to go to school (high school) many times!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:41pm David D:

@geezerette: Yes, I either listen to the streams of WFMU and occasionally other stations from around the world. or music of my own choosing of course. It's great to have all this here!
Avatar 8:42pm coelacanth∅:

Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

coel! it's alive. it's aliiiiiivvvvvve
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Glad to have ya back, Hyde! I know the pain of rural internet believe me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm David D:

@northguineahills: Well, it of course depends on what you're looking for. The Internet makes so much else possible, of course.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

this track hasn't gotten the respect it deserves, imo. One of my favorite Harmonia sessions, in a way
Avatar 8:44pm hyde:

@Flash you'd think that living a mere two hour drive from NYC that the grid would be at least OK. but you'd be wrong.
Avatar 8:44pm northguineahills:

@hyde: So, losing you internet was a Clusterfuck? Wait, that sounded wrong...
Avatar 8:45pm coelacanth∅:

haha! effectively, yes!
Avatar 8:45pm hyde:

@ngh heh, exactly
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

@Hyde: well I'm down in dum dum state North Carolina, but I'm less than 15 minutes away from competing fiber projects and I have fought to have a 3 megabit up speed, so I get it. it's a gerrymandered oligopoly we're livin' in
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

drums on this selange are cool i think
  8:57pm Doctorjazz:

been great car company, loving this stuff!
(I'm in the NY area... there's still almost nothing on the radio airwaves worth listening to... mostly fmu, some npr, some WKCR (college) , some WBGO (jazz),that's it.
Avatar 9:00pm coelacanth∅:

this one i heard when i was a teenager, was some kind of play on "king's lead hat", but i never figured out how it's connected.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm David D:

Well this music is fantastic and fascinating, Evan - so glad to be able to hang out and listen!
Avatar 9:00pm Mayuko:

It's been so so good!!! I can stay awake and work until midnight!
Avatar 9:01pm coelacanth∅:

(then again, i don't know why i never played it backward)
Avatar 9:02pm coelacanth∅:

hi Mayuko!
Avatar 9:02pm Flash Strap:

vocals on this are reversed from the chorus on Kings Lead Hat from Before and After Science
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Uncle Michael:

And "Kings Lead Hat" is an anagram for...
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

It's great to have you hanging out, DD! It's great to have you all here in fact!

Hello Uncle!
Avatar 9:04pm Mayuko:

hola, coelacanth∅!
Avatar 9:05pm coelacanth∅:

(talking heads)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06pm Uncle Michael:

Man, I've been digging about for a Cluster track for a special I'm working on.
Avatar 9:07pm Flash Strap:

maybe i can help ?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm melinda:

Interesting instrument combo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm Uncle Michael:

I'll email you, Evan. Thank.
Avatar 9:08pm Flash Strap:

@melinda: I agree! I love the tendency for hawaiian guitar to pop up in krautrock stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm melinda:

I didn't know there was that tendency. Always learning new stuff.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Doug Schulkind:

Here is the thrilling thing. I have never heard any of this music before. Thrill ing.
Avatar 9:20pm coelacanth∅:

not unremarkable Evan!
Avatar 9:23pm Flash Strap:

Hi Doug! Happy to play a new sound to your veteran ears, captain

Thanks, C.!
  9:24pm SeanG:

i'm floating in a sea of cosmic forests!
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

Hi Sean G! Your comment reminds me of the cover art for this, which I love to death: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

it's such a good image for a record whose title means "through the desert"
  9:28pm SeanG:

just dive right in!
Avatar 9:29pm coelacanth∅:

the few times (3 exactly) that i've made an effort to meet a performer after a show were remarkable...at least to me.
- two because they hugged me - not just a little hug! (Carrie Brownstein & Katell Keineg); and one because shaking his hand sent extraordinary tingles up my arm. (Thomas Mapfumo)
Avatar 9:29pm Flash Strap:

you can hear Moebius is on this one, pitching in with the burning rubber cartoonman voice sound
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

I rarely ever do it myself, but that one was worth it
Avatar 9:31pm coelacanth∅:

i'm glad you did it, so we got to hear the story!
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

this record is so cool. I like Okko Bekker on the saw even more than the sitar
Avatar 9:39pm coelacanth∅:

the saw is a gorgeous instrument in the right hands. (ie, Okko Bekker... also the saw player on Joanna Newsom's "cosmia" on her 3-track ep)
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

Two of these guys are from Kraan, a jazz-rock group in Germany. Asmus Tietchens is I guess sort of a proto industrial electronics guy. Okko Bekker is a weirdo who's most famous for an album of extremely psychedelic sitar covers, and we get the rare Plank instrumental performance
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

saw is amazing, I agree
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

"I love King Kong... 'cause he's so strong"
Avatar 9:42pm hyde:

i have some amazing record with a female Chinese saw player, and i can't remember her name and i can't find it, and it's driving me crazy
Avatar 9:43pm Flash Strap:

Fang Teng Lee?
Avatar 9:43pm hyde:

Avatar 9:44pm hyde:

i'm glad at least one of us ha some brain cells left
Avatar 9:44pm Flash Strap:

huh, I never knew Fang Teng Lee was a woman. Amazing, wonderful music! I've played her on the show a few times as I recall
Avatar 9:45pm coelacanth∅:

thank both of you! i'm going to look into this person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45pm David D:

This is lovely - I won't say which one since it applies to so much of the show.
Avatar 9:45pm Flash Strap:

I hate when the only thing stopping you from finding a record is an inability to remember what it's called
Avatar 9:46pm hyde:

since i couldn't even remember the name, i would say my gender assumption about Fang Teng Lee may also be worth doubting
Avatar 9:48pm Flash Strap:

sad to report, it seems we have a fella: img.discogs.com...

@Flash that is a problem that is even worse, i think, with digital libraries. with an analog collection you might be able to use visual memory to get yourself to where you need to be. with digital, if you can't remember a name, you are toast

Avatar 9:49pm coelacanth∅:

i have all (maybe) my albums and much of my other music roughly alphabetised in a notebook ; but because of that exact scenario decided to make a cross-reference using categories.
- i never finished it though.
Avatar 9:49pm hyde:

welp, so i lost the name and got the gender of the player wrong. i still like the music!
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

that is the key component, the rest is minutiae
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:01pm melinda:

Enjoyed the show!
Avatar 10:03pm hyde:

Rastakraut Pasta is one of my favorite records simply ever
Avatar 10:09pm hyde:

hehe, i always falter and break down about a half hour into the Cool Blue Flame anyhow. i am old, and i need my rest.
Avatar 10:10pm Flash Strap:

I can't blame ya, I rarely hear past his first half hour myself (at least live)
Avatar 10:12pm Flash Strap:

Man, Moebius loves those frog farts and bog blurps, so great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm Uncle Michael:

This Keyser Söze guy plays a mean bass.
Avatar 10:14pm geezerette:

It's goofy! I won't share the animation in my head, but it's,(the music) very funny. Great stuff to draw to.
Avatar 10:14pm Flash Strap:

next, to follow up these two delightfully grotesque reggae concoctions, we'll hear Moebius & Plank lay down one of the most lovely, delicate compositions of the evening
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm melinda:

I hear Ring of Fire.
Avatar 10:15pm hyde:

haha, it's totally Ring of Fire
Avatar 10:15pm geezerette:

  11:04pm Doctorjazz:

So, what albums to start with, tough decisions.
Avatar 11:07pm Flash Strap:

i'd say, Harmonia's 2 (& Live 74), Zuckerzeit, Durch Die Wuste, Rastakraut Pasta take the lead, but that's me

Avatar 11:27pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Pretty amazing to reflect that the live broadcasting on the Drummer Stream today began at 9am and hasn't stopped. Fifteen straight hours of live radio. It's a record. Well, a lot of records.

Avatar 11:38pm Flash Strap:

Moebius didn't do much work outside of collaborations, which makes this masterpiece is a rare delight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm JtotheK:
