Ta, @Stanley the manly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14am
Jeff Golick:

@Stanley: had a great (work) convo with a Scottish author/agent last week. He recommended a Scottish noir author of the 1970s, whose work I promptly ordered. Can't wait to read. Name of Rae.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am
Stanley:

Hi Jeff - I'm back from the washing up, now. I haven't heard of the Scottish noir author Rae. But the novel writing game is a major industry now, here in Scotland. This export income will be welcome, now that the oil's drying up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am
Jeff Golick:

That's surprising, @Stanley, as I don't typically associate the phrases "novel writing" and "major industry," regardless of region. (Or were you joking?)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am
Jeff Golick:

@ljfw: need more coffee; just figured out your comment.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:00am
listener james from westwood:

Sometimes it seems like finding new European authors is an American industry. Witness the combing of Scandinavia for unknown-to-the-US novelists after Stieg Larsson. Meanwhile the country itself is like, "Oh, yeah, they've been writing for years."

"Games Without Frontiers" also on this same record. (Well, they did name another LP "Prog.")
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06am

@RRN63: Neil Finn, a very very good songwriter. Don't know that record, though.
Avatar 10:09am

His debut solo apparently. Just reading Robyn Hitchcock talking about being in the set of people who went to the 'Beatle Academy' of songwriting...

Some people have names that fit into "Eleanor Rigby," and some have names that fit into "Goldfinger." You and I fit the latter.
Avatar 🦀 Swag For Life Member 10:16am
listener james from westwood:

So do "Ken Freedman" and "Doug Schulkind." Go ape with the alternate lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17am
Jeff Golick:

That's great; @ljfw.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am
Stanley:

Sure, Jeff. Popular writers like Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting), Alexander Mcall Smith (The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency) and Iain Rankin (Rebus novels) are just the tip of the iceberg. My father is into his thriller detective books and it seems every other title he reads is Scottish. For a real creepy read I recommend 'Under the Skin' by Michael Faber.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am
Jeff Golick:

Also good n creepy n dark, though Irish: Ken Bruen. Thanks for the rec.!
