Avatar 7:08pm emily:

did you guys hear the bats?? they joined the Tammys at the end of Egyptian Shumba.
  7:10pm Hypertoast:

My internet just kicked in! Who is is being interviewed right now?
  7:10pm Listener Robert:

Of course if you closed them entirely to humans, how would we ever know what was in them? Remote-controlled probes?
Avatar 7:11pm emily:

This is Mike, he is the amazing WFMU fan and supporter and host with the most.
  7:12pm Hypertoast:

Thank you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:17pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Neat show! Lots of info about caves on the old National Geographic site. www.nationalgeographic.com...
  7:17pm chucktown Dan:

as someone who did a fair amount of caving in swva/ etn this brings back some memories.
  7:18pm james:

the guide made me nervous!
Avatar 7:19pm emily:

thanks, Ken from HP! and Dan--I am brand new to it, but I'm so hooked. I loved it.
  7:19pm Kate:

a beach on the moon, perfect and thanks for the heads up about earphones, feels like I'm there with you.
  7:19pm Danne D:

Avatar 7:20pm cosmic matrix:

  7:21pm Kate:

Avatar 7:21pm cosmic matrix:

jeremy sounds so grounded.
Avatar 7:21pm kimzilla & emily:

@cosmic matrix: thank you! haha and no problem ;) that was for you. it drove us crazy, too.
  7:22pm james f:

damn spelunkers!!!
Avatar 7:22pm cosmic matrix:

  7:22pm Kimzilla:

Who knew spelunkers and caverns are at such odds!
  7:23pm Kate:

wow the acoustics are crazy
Avatar 7:23pm kimzilla & emily:

I know!! And this isn't stock audio, either. It's all just what we recorded in the cave.
  7:24pm Kimzilla:

Doesn't it sound like cave yoga?
  7:24pm james:

so dramatic!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:25pm common:

Pretty great
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:26pm Ken From Hyde Park:

By the end of the show, we must all declare we know the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite!
  7:26pm Kimzilla:

What's our guess?
  7:28pm Kimzilla:

I meant what's your guess.
Avatar 7:29pm βrian:

The problem is, spelunking sounds like way more fun than caving.
Avatar 7:30pm βrian:

Wait, can you affect the accent of Werner Herzog??
  7:30pm Kate:

Emily did you feel your breath shaking? I can hear a catch in it sometimes?
  7:31pm james:

calvin and hobbes went spelunking all the time
  7:31pm Kimzilla:

Take that Dan Bodah!
Avatar 7:32pm emily:

@Brian: haha I wish I could!! I would have being doing it the whole time if I could do even a passable Werner Herzog.
@Kate: oh, definitely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Stalactites hang from the ceiling (they need to hang on tight) and stalagmites are the other ones.
Avatar 7:34pm emily:

I always think stalagMITES. like mites that crawl on the ground!
  7:34pm james f:

dan bodah!!!
  7:34pm Kimzilla:

But can't mites hang from the ceiling like spiders?
Avatar 7:34pm βrian:

Now *this* should be The WoofMoo Morning Show!
Avatar 7:35pm emily:

@Brian: oh, go on. You're making us blush.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:37pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I hung up a bat house on a tree in my yard about a dozen years ago. I don't think any bats ever nested in it. It fell down last fall. I should find another place for it.
Avatar 7:38pm kimzilla & emily:

@ Ken from HP: she talks about bat houses later on in here! I didn't even know about them before.
Avatar 7:38pm βrian:

I can tell you, bats really like Arvo Pärt. A small group used to live in the wall behind my speakers.

They would sing along.
Avatar 7:39pm kimzilla & emily:

@Brian: haha! that's wonderful. they like Egyptian Shumba, too ;)
  7:39pm Kimzilla:

If you listen really carefully you can hear Dave the Spazz in the background.
Avatar 7:40pm βrian:

@Ken from HP: That's on my to-do list. Especially since we shooed them outside.
  7:40pm Kate:

wow she said that after drinking tequila
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:41pm chris:

bats are cute. and awesome. caves are cool (i'm in the spelunker category). this is another great episode you two! thanks!
Avatar 7:42pm emily:

thank you, chris! we had the best time making it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Daughter and I spied a bat the other day at dusk. So many have succumbed to the white nose fungus that it was reassuring to see one ... what a trooper!
When mom bats go out flying, the pup clings to her and goes out on the ride.
Avatar 7:44pm kimzilla & emily:

caves.org is a great resource for finding your local caves and expert guides!
Avatar 7:45pm kimzilla & emily:

@Ken from HP: that's so sweet! they're such cool little creatures.
Avatar 7:46pm βrian:

The last time we had a bat in the house, my cat set point. The bat was sleepy, so I could gently scoop it in a pair of gloves and take it outside.
Avatar 7:47pm kimzilla & emily:

@Brian: aww, nice!
  7:48pm Ava:

We love the show! You guys rock!
Avatar 7:49pm kimzilla & emily:

Ava!!! We're so happy you do :) Thank you!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:49pm Greg from ZONE 5:

Well obviously bats have more in common with us than rodents. Cuz of vampires.
Avatar 7:49pm βrian:

Who is the bat person? I used to live with a Brown bat researcher years ago.
Avatar 7:50pm kimzilla & emily:

@Greg: right, exactly.
Avatar 7:50pm cosmic matrix:

very very good show!
Avatar 7:51pm kimzilla & emily:

@Brian: her name is Amanda--she lives down there on the bat property. She's really bright and had so much great information. And held it together through a lot of silliness, too.
Avatar 7:51pm kimzilla & emily:

thank you, Cosmic Matrix!
  7:51pm Danne D:

all this blood stuff is making me hungry!
Avatar 7:52pm βrian:

Does anyone put out vampire bat feeders, akin to hummingbird feeders?
  7:52pm spodiodi:

I agree w/Danne D
  7:52pm Kimzilla:

That porch was a magical place to have conversation. I miss it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:52pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Just checked BatCon: www.batcon.org
Reminds me of how in Texas, they can detect swarms of bats on the weather radar.
Avatar 7:52pm kimzilla & emily:

@Brian: oooh, good question! what an interesting idea...
@Danne D: ew.
Avatar 7:53pm kimzilla & emily:

@Ken from HP: Ava was telling us about that, too! So cool!
  7:53pm Kimzilla:

@brian like a blood feeder, eww.
Avatar 7:54pm βrian:

Eastern Michigan University was where my bat researcher studied, FWIW.
  7:54pm Kate:

altruism among vampire bats the circle is complete
Avatar 7:55pm βrian:

I've seen the evening departure of the bats from the Congress Ave bridge in Austin. It was really impressive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:57pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@βrian - Me, too. It was like watching smoke wafting down the river.
Avatar 7:57pm βrian:

Work on that accent, by the way.
Avatar 7:57pm kimzilla & emily:

thanks all. PS, Nick Cave is what bats listen to.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:00pm Ken From Hyde Park:

See you next time. Same bat-time; same bat-channel!
  8:34pm Listener Robert:

This was great radio. I do tell Steve here (a WFMU listener but not, yet, to your program) your show is frequently very interesting, and even when it's not a "grabber", it's not totally boring. But this one was a real grabber.

And such a surprise! Who would think that descriptions about a place and an activity would be so great in just audio? But when you think about it, this would've been boring video. Moving pictures would not convey well the impressions of people entering a dark space with just a narrow bit of lighting -- and then going even without that for a bit. The edited audio realities were great, and you also included plenty of interview (or dialog) with experts.
