i haven't listened to that album in maybe thirty years. vocals are by Vikku Vinayakram. the John McLaughlin jazz/rock fusion from Mahavishnu Orchestra has stood the test of time better'n most. maybe his Indo-fusion does too!

Geezerette! Lovely to see you here!
  7:30pm
Dean:

First I've heard of Kalniņš, so I checked the Fanfare archive of reviews, two of which stand out. One includes this passage about Kalniņš's "Rock" symphony:

"I highly recommend it to your listening as an example (along with Glen Roger Davis’s rock-influenced Piano Concerto in F) of how one can write real, substantive music while still using a rock beat. In fact, in the latter portion of this movement, the rhythm seems to combine ethnic folk music with the rock drummer! In addition, [cond. Kristjan] Järvi has all of the disparate threads of this score firmly under control, which leads to a particularly fascinating and engaging performance. Thus what I assumed would be a low point turns out to be one of the highlights of the disc."

Another reviewer on a different recording of the same symphony is less flattering. "It's endlessly repetitive, banal, and cutesy pseudo-music, going absolutely nowhere in two whole record sides of the most sickening clichés. I've tried to find just a few minutes in this piece that I can tolerate and have been completely unsuccessful."

To each his own!

The Naïve release with Järvi from c.2015 is the subject of the first review, a Melodiya, cond. Vigners c.1980, the second.

Some health issues, which I will email you about later. But....we are getting better and better each day. A clerk at the hardware store this morning said tht she had heard that Corvallis has had some amount of rain for the last 165 days. More than recorded in the last 75 years. We are "praying" for sun!
  7:59pm
Dean:

Fanfare recently turned me on to Miloslav Kabeláč, a Czech composer who lived through the 20th C. until '79. He, too, had his artistic run-ins with the authorities. No rock sensibilities at work, but a recent complete symphonies release has garnered high acclaim. Give a listen to "The Mystery of Time."
