A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

  10:19am Adrian in London:

Eddy Grant! I saw him do a couple of songs at a TV recording at the London Palladium last year. He was really good. Lovely chap too, by all accounts.
Avatar 10:19am cosmic matrix:

this song has one of the strangest synth sounds....sounds like a sighing robot....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am Ike:

This is the only time of year that I miss living next to Branch Brook Park even a little. One of the nicest parts of the park is accessed by taking the light rail to the Branch Brook stop, then taking the cross-tracks walkway to the northeastern exit at Grafton Ave., then walk north. (Basically go to the area across the street from Clara Maass Medical Ctr.)
Avatar 10:21am the Canterbury wood-elf:

i remember this Eddie Grant tune in the charts when i was about 13, had no idea what it was about... now i've got some historical perspective - the Brixton riots of '81 or '82 took place around an actual Electric Avenue
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am JtotheK:

electric avenue - thanks for spinning this! hi everyone.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Passaic River Blues:

@MD: While you down that way, pick me up some coffee and olives from Sahadi's.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Greg from ZONE 5:

Amen, Ike.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am Ike:

Wait, there's an *actual* Electric Ave.?!? Wow, and a Google Maps link too! You just blew my mind! I always just figured it was a metaphor that I didn't understand or something!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am upsetter5001:

Good Morning Modern World of Trouble!
Avatar 10:25am fm Mike:

Mina's song reminded me of our local college station. Their marathon theme is "Spaghetti Western in Space". I gotta donate to them.
Avatar 10:26am glenn:

there's an electric avenue in calgary as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: lesser known fact, Stephen Crane Village, the Newark Housing Authority projects hard by Branch Brook and near Clara Maas, was where Frankie Valli and most of the Four Seasons grew up.
Avatar 10:28am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Ike There are dozens of Victorian streets in English towns and cities named after electricity, gas and other such ultra-modern innovations!
Endless fun can be found searching www.streetmap.co.uk
Avatar 10:34am Trouble:

do you all know about this? it prompted a very interesting discussion with my art students hyperallergic.com...
  10:37am sugarwolf:

I've been to the actual Electric Avenue!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am sphere:

i don't have time to read the Hyperallergic article all the way through, but i think i agree with the author from what i've seen there.
Avatar 10:37am fm Mike:

Wait, I liked a Solange song? I thought she was the discount Beyonce.
Avatar 10:38am bobdoesthings:

YEESSSSSSSS!!! Love this song. can't get enough Bobby Oroza!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am annie:

SO SO grateful for this show today..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Mick:

Thanks for link Trouble - that controversy keeps running into me. Have you been to the Biennial yet?
Avatar 10:39am Little Danny:

Ah this Bobby Oroza. Gorgeous!
Avatar 10:39am Trouble:

but have i played this song too much? i can't tell, i'm so in love with it
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am melinda:

I only recently learned that there was a real Electric Avenue (from someone on an FMU comment board, of course).
Avatar 10:40am bobdoesthings:

No trouble! not enough!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Passaic River Blues:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Bronwyn Bishop:

i dont understand why dana schutz couldn't just stay in her lane.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am melinda:

That Hyperallergic article is really worth reading, one of the better pieces I've read on the controversy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am JP from KC:

'morning, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am Passaic River Blues:

@Melinda: agreed. It's really good, and elaborates some of my undeveloped thoughts about this story. I subscribe to the Hyperallergic email list (thanks to Trouble!) but did not read this before. It considers the criticism on its own terms, and grants how complicated matters of representation can be.

This is a good pull quote: "There’s a fundamental misunderstanding at work in damning abstraction by associating it with erasure and irresponsibility. Abstraction, like mimeticism, is an aesthetic language that can be interpreted and used politically in a range of ways. It doesn’t necessarily mean erasure, but it does complicate the connection between perception and intellection".

I thought yesterday was Thursday. I only found out it wasn't when I tuned into you and heard Ken instead. You can imagine my disappointment...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Passaic River Blues:

Wow, go Minnesota. Nearly 75% is pretty damn high, especially considering the factors of felon disenfranchisement and people sick/confined/travelling/incapacitated/etc.

Kidding aside, Trump picked up an alarming number of votes here, for such a reliably blue state. Lots of people outside Minneapolis-St. Paul, as you can guess.

Resolution 34 just passed the other day, now your ISP can go ahead and sell your internet history to the highest bidder, among a couple of other intrusive spying going on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:19am Mister Dobalina:

I don't think any Dems voted in favor, but four did not vote.
