doctorjazz:

This is Yiddish, no? (my Yiddish is pretty rusty).
Love it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:50pm
David D:

That was indeed Yiddish (more later?)
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:52pm

Love to hear more!

Su-Su-Su-Su-Su-Su-Sugartown?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 4:59pm
doctorjazz:

There's still a lot of Klezmer in Europe?
Are there many Yiddish speakers around?
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
doctorjazz:

(that's a silly question, there is Klezmer in the US, though I don't think there are many Yiddish speakers here).
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:00pm
doctorjazz:

It's a bit like the Blues revival.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:04pm
David D:

Yes, a lot of Klez-vival here in Germany, with workshops and the like. I know there is a big one in Weimar each summer (another good town to choose to be). Not a large number of Yiddish-speakers, I'm afraid. Although a woman once did randomly ask me directions in Yiddish.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:06pm

Wow, Time really was the thief at the end of the Bread, Love, and Dreams track

My parents were Yiddish speakers, can understand a bit, took lessons at one point, but never practiced enough to actually be able to speak.

Mark R:

Man, that Renata Lú track was smokin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24pm
David D:

doctorjazz: Passive knowledge is already a great advantage. I wonder if you can also understand some German then, the similarities are extensive, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26pm
David D:

Yes indeed, Mark R!

Parq:

Great Latin set. A simple conversation about Santana with a co-worker last Friday started me on a Latin-music journey that lasted all weekend. May I heartily recommend Trueba "Calle 54" to anyone who hasn't seen it?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32pm
David D:

Thanks, Parq -I'll cue one more up then...
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:33pm
doctorjazz:

I do recognize some German words as well, lots of Yiddish comes from German (and Hebrew, and whatever else was spoken in the area.
Also loving the latin set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:34pm
Parq:

Also, for real nerds on the subject (como yo), "The Latin Tinge" by John Roberts is well worth the time.
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:44pm
doctorjazz:

The Latin Tinge was what Jelly Roll Morton said he brought into jazz
Avatar 🚂 Swag For Life Member 5:58pm
doctorjazz:

Gotta run, catch you next time, thanks for the fine show, David!

John Storm Roberts is one of my heroes.

Greetings, David D and all Subwayfarers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:48pm
David D:

Good evenmorning, Doug!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:50pm
Parq:

Doug, have you seen Calle 54? Not only is the move great, but the DVD includes a "Side B" feature-length interview program about the history of Latin jazz in the US and Latin America. You (Doug) probably know much of the info already, but I think you would still really enjoy it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:51pm
Parq:

David, that Shura L. was astonishingly lovely.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm

Agreed, Parq, I just recently discovered her and she is fantastic!

I'd say! Here are the lyrics, transliterated, translated and in Yiddish orthography.

There's a duet of "In Time" with Dean Martin and Judy Holiday that's just wonderful. I discovered it via Monica (natch).

@Parq
Saw it ages ago. Would love to do so again.
