Since Charlie Haden is in bed music, I sent this to some friends last wk, by coincidence: interview with him and npr’s TERRY GROSS, re-b'cast in aug 2014, notes I took- “I was 19yo, and i had to be careful when playing w/others. bec i had a diff musical sense. i didn’t want to get others mad. Then i met ORNETTE COLEMAN, and ornette played the same way I did! we went to his apt and ornette gave me sheet music: ‘I have some ideas here, you play and do yr own thing’, he said to me. we’d play shows and fights would break out, people couldn’t understand the music. Once i had my eyes closed and when i opened them, i saw LEONARD BERNSTEIN, and he was just transfixed. He later helped get me a music scholarship.  “ornette and i once did a 20,000 stadium show in Portugal, and i dedicated it to the black liberation army. People cheered but the police went crazy. i later got arrested at the airport and was interrogated thru the night. Ornette tried to get the u.s. embassy involved but they said “hey, we got military bases here. You’re embarrassing us”. but a cultural attache was sent. and I was really worried, my wife had just given birth to triplets and I was wondering if I’d ever see them again. we later returned and played in front of 40,000 – the crowd chanted “shar-lee shar-lee". It was great."
