A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am Mick:

Oh, and watch out for the robocalls that ask: "Can you hear me ok?" They can record your answer, and have been known to use a vocalized "Yes" for nefarious purposes (or at least to spur a lot of follow up calls).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Passaic River Blues:

Both of our senators in New Jersey voted against Sen. Sanders' drug pricing amendment. As much as Sen. Booker can be on the right side of things, he also has a troubling history w/r/t financial regulation and reigning in Big Pharma. ... For the last couple of months I've been getting calls on my cell phone from a Scientology Center in Los Angeles. Every fifth or sixth call, I answer by exclaiming, "I HAVE NO MONEY! FORGIVE ME, LORD XENU!" or something like that, and then hang up. I do this in a hallway at my job and hope that, through these outbursts, I am cultivating the reputation of office freakshow.

Avatar 10:20am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

They can spoof the numbers, all mine come from 202 (DC) which is confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21am Webhamster Henry:

Hi Trouble and Troubled ones!
Avatar 10:21am bobdoesthings:

oh yeah I get 202 numbers as well.. which is confusing because I grew up in the 201 area code in NJ. so it tricks me!
  10:22am JakeGould:

"No Call" registries are a joke. They mostly just block you from someone explicitly contacting that exact number. But there is nothing stopping anyone for sequentially dialing numbers in an area code or region.

Most call centers for scams start dialing (for example) from 212-555-0001 to 212-555-9999. That is why robocalls and semi-automated calls still exist. Loopholes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am ifny:

@pierre that probably makes Montreal the midpoint. Good beer there. Fin du Monde (12%) is a favourite title of mine, though Unibroue is too big to be a microbrewery now.
Avatar 10:24am bobdoesthings:

Sometimes I stay on the line till I get a person and I quickly blurt out "TAKE ME OFF YOUR LIST - DO NOT CALL EVER AGAIN" because I heard some nonsense about how they're legally obligated to do so.. not like I could ever back that up or chase em down.. but at least I yelled at someone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24am ifny:

@JakeGould perhaps in the US. Not up here though, No Call lists seem to be actually enforced. Our government polites robocallers to death.
Avatar 10:25am βrian:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Passaic River Blues:

@Ike: that could be it! (I often get the Scientology mythology all mixed up. Perhaps if I come out as an ardent Xenutian they'll take me off the list, like if the Family Research Council calls you up, talking about how Anton LaVey had a lot of good ideas will probably get you excised from the call list.

@Melinda: I used to work with a girl whose Gujarati father was taken in by such a scam and paid something like $10k to sort out a made-up tax lien that had to be rectified RIGHT AWAY. It was terrible, and it seemed the worst part was her father's mixture of anger and self-directed scorn for having been so foolish.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Mick:

MD - thanks for the tip on changing "Regulations" to "Protections." The way we frame things affects the whole conversation.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Indeed - I bet that was on Karl Rove & Newt Gingrich's short list of terms to manipulate back in the 'Republican Revolution'.
Avatar 11:24am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

Yeah, seems like the Republicans always win at framing the conversation. That's how they won the 2nd Amendment debate, they always talked about right to bare arms. People on our side never succeeded in bringing up the rest of the amendment: "well regulated militia."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yes - essentially their argument for Gun Deregulation devolves to the Constitutional Right to own weapons to challenge the Government - any kind of weapon @ all - & only if they were 'well-regulated' (...Not). That's if you interpreted it that way, rather than the U.S. has a Right to the Armed Forces. Which is - completely different. All the Gun nonsense that makes us different from the entire rest of the developed world is based on no more that this.
Of course - it would all only be to defend a Government that (even more fundamentally) Constitutionally "promotes the General Welfare" - I can only presume...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...& the Rights to Free Assembly, Religion - LIFE, Liberty & Happiness that we All have (gun owners or nay)...
Avatar 11:37am đ¢ ÞäŦ:

It's all for political tomfoolery. The republicans know exactly what the bill of rights says but they're experts at filtering it to their purposes. Meanwhile the wishwashy liberals just react: "Hey, you can't do that. That's not fair!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

It's a harsh irony that the true lovers of Freedom are harder to Organize (as Julian Cope observed: the Romans marched in Straight Lines & built roads - the Celts favored Spirals...)

  11:43am sugarwolf:

2nd amendment: I have to reread the book I saw this in but in the 18th if you owned a gun, you had to serve in the well regulated militia, and most people didn't want to do that. So they generally didn't own guns.
