Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from January 17, 2017 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Info about the gaz:

Dybbuk (Plyn) 1985
These are early recordings of the Czech all girl group Zubi Nehti. The group
was founded in 1980 as Plyn (translates to “Gas”). After being blacklisted in
1983, they changed their name to Dybbuk (after evil spirits of dead in old
Jewish believes). In 1987 they christened to Zubi Neki. Find the complete
story on Wikipedia.
The recordings were first published as a cassette release in the later 80ies.
Rudolfo Protti and his 'Old Europa Cafe' tape-label were instrumental in
spreading underground music from Czechoslovakia. Most of it from the wider
prog-rock-underground circles of MCH-band (Mikolas Chadima). All very good
stuff. He even put out some vinyl.
No one spoke Czech in the West and the tapes were spread by an Italian
label to the western world. So I guess this is the reason, why everything -even
the group name- is in English. It is even likely that Rudolfo's Czech contacts
just gave all the info completely translated. I know the same habit from my
Russian/Ukrainian friends. No one would be able to pronounce correctly
anyway. Enjoy!

Kevin Failure:

Thanks everyone for listening. Thanks to the listeners who caught a couple of mistakes - there was a track played by Kapitan Nemo that came after the Labrotorija Szvuka track (which was cut a little short), which I forgot to mention and didn't make it onto the playlist. Truth be told, trying to do all of this while getting the cover images up was quite a challenge.

Thanks for the info on The Gaz/Dybbuk (Plyn) - I'd mentioned off the air the information about it being a misprint of the band name, but couldn't remember their actual name or anything, and that is how it's listed on the compilation. They eventually released an LP themselves in '90, I believe.

Next time I visit I will try to bring some more stuff from countries that didn't get much or any focus - though it must be remembered that in some places there was very little quality stuff that made it to vinyl. East Germany, for example, only released two compilations of new wave stuff on the state label. Some countries had only one or two new wave songs that have made it to a compilation, and some places seemed to release nothing of this sort officially at all.
