Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 3:41pm Matt from Springfield:

Ha, I was wondering if that was the groove or just the fade-out!
That would make a great bed - Irwin uses/used one that R. Stevie took a skipped groove and played guitar on top of it.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/16/17 3:52pm MD:

@ Andrew Waterloo...I am still on the fence about doing that 10 album thing...I think we should boil it down to ONE! I KNOW THAT MAKES THINGS REALLY REALLY HARD...

How do us Freeform Fanatics boil it down to just 10...I think freeform is and can be genetic...so how did we not have that gene in high school???
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 3:57pm Matt from Springfield:

@MD: It takes exposure to develop Freeform instincts - I didn't tune in to WFMU (online) until I was 24, yet virtually all of my new "leads" come from here. More a criticism of commercial radio nowadays (and for a long time in the DC area) and lack of imagination elsewhere.
Avatar Mon. 1/16/17 3:58pm Monica:

thx, kiddo! would love if they did an Part 2 update to this track. still holds up brilliantly but so much material to skewer since then.

hi Scott and others
...i must've fallen asleep immediately after Jim Price. Frank Zappa awoke me and it was splendid!
...what a Great set!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/16/17 3:59pm Andrew Waterloo:

I dunno, I just quickly listed 10 and made sure they were actually released early enough to count. Actually, having completely different adult tastes is an accomplishment.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/16/17 3:59pm MD:

@ Matt from Springfield...Excellent Points! Thank you for that Brain Food...That is why I love the message board!

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:02pm JakeGould:

I put the “Risky Business” soundtrack (which had Tangerine Dream on it) on my 10 teen/tween list. So don’t say I was being cool!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/16/17 4:03pm MD:

See! You should have used the SKIP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:04pm Matt from Springfield:

My pleazh, MD! One can get the munchies on this board, so I always chip in some "snacks"!

I checked a Best of VU comp when I was nearly 17 - but it started my love for Lou and John and Mo &c...AND, I got it in under the wire! Yet my hip triumph is unnoted - none of the people I know IRL are even in to THAT!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/16/17 4:04pm Andrew Waterloo:

I would have put a Rush album on my list except I didn't really own any albums. I had Chronicles and a bunch of bootlegs.
  Mon. 1/16/17 4:04pm northguineahills:

I didn't even listen to music until age 16, and my music tastes didn't even mature until age 24
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:06pm JakeGould:

I had a fairly intense Rush collection back in the 1980s. All vinyl. When my parents passed away in the 1990s and we had to clear out the apartment, I just left all of the Rush right there in my childhood closet. Gotta let go!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:06pm coelacanth∅:

My list with a picture of buttons I wore at various times as a 1980s teen. www.instagram.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:10pm Matt from Springfield:

@NGH: That's kind of like me - the pop culture mass media choices were so limited (burban VA in the 90s), I listened more to stuff my folks had in their collections (Dad's Steely Dan, Mom's The Band) - some cassettes I had for a while (Beatles "Yellow Submarine", early early Shania) - post-Black Album Metallica was about the heaviest edgiest stuff you could get everywhere. Not till I started driving and listening to the classic rock station did I start to get an appreciation for "catalogue" tracks and really get into the history and evolution of great music. In the privacy of my car, I was able to make it my "own".
Avatar Mon. 1/16/17 4:11pm geezerette:

coel, I knew Moussorgsky as a teen too! He was so cute! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:14pm coelacanth∅:

...g!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Mon. 1/16/17 4:15pm Andrew Waterloo:

I was fortunate enough to have Much Music, an OK college radio station, Internet forums, and a mother who did merchandising for a department store record section. My parents didn't really listen to everything and my older brother liked Metallica, Steve Miller, Boston, and then Garth Brooks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:15pm coelacanth∅:

nice, Jake! i'd like to see the whole collection.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:15pm Matt from Springfield:

True geezerette, I was still pretty familiar with Classical in my teens, even before driving (music lessons helped give exposure to that), and we still have a great terrestrial Classical station in the DC area. But even that classic rock station is gone now! The Arrow/The Globe switched format in spring '09, and commercial terrestrial was dead to me. I got XM in the car and (just happened) to first listen to FMU around the same time. Liberation!

This bass line always gives me a cramp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:19pm Matt from Springfield:

@Andrew: Cecile has talked much about Ed the Sock and other kickass stuff from MuchMusic - but you're already in Canada right? I think MM is based there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:20pm coelacanth∅:

my father gave me "the student prince" and Vivaldi- trumpet concertos when i was ...? i liked them but didn't really get into classical until a few years later when i heard my brother playing
"the firebird suite", which blew me away.
i was touched by my father's gift though. i didn't think he gave a shit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:22pm Matt from Springfield:

Critical albums in shaping my taste at 16 were still from my parents CD stash: Al Stewart's "Time Passages" (1978) and The Beatles "White Album" (1968). Not only for the songs and their styles, but the wonderful SEQUENCING on those albums - the way one song gave way to another is just amazing on both of those, and it really helped define a "concept" album to me and appreciate the little details like that. I took a more broader journey after getting deep into those albums. It's why I really mean it when I appreciate a good DJ segue - the sequencing is important, too :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:24pm Matt from Springfield:

Nice, coela.
Which Vivaldi suite? "Il Gardenillo/The Goldfinch" is a flute concerto of his that is EXCELLENT.
Avatar Mon. 1/16/17 4:24pm Monica:

this min bul has got me in my feels!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:25pm Scott Williams:

same here Monica! listened to it 3 times in a row last night. props to DJs Sam & Fabs for putting it on my radar last week
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:25pm Matt from Springfield:

Ah, "Firebird Suite" is a Stravinsky from much later. Though still highly acclaimed. I'll have to seek that out (DJ Bethany here turned me on to Stravinsky!)
Avatar Mon. 1/16/17 4:26pm geezerette:

Improvisation on an Indian Scale is amazingly addictive
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 4:33pm coelacanth∅:

Matt, agreed about the segues.
...the album is just called "trumpet concertos" and i don't have it here right now. -i am very fond of Vivaldi in general though, now. ...at the same time my brother (inadvertently) turned me on to "le sacru de printemps"(sp?) . i love them both.

G'night Wendy!

You know with those top 10 lists on social media? If someone lists “Front 242” in their list I call bullshit on that. But list “Killing Joke” and I believe that.

Bye Wendy!

@Jake: True that. I only heard of Front 242 a couple years ago myself, and that was because I first heard a *cover* of "Headhunter" and found the original while investigating. Like the Nurse With Wound list, a lot of these obscure pioneers are like a cheat-sheet for poseurs establishing cred.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 5:46pm JakeGould:

Or anyone listing Boredoms on their list.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 5:47pm Matt from Springfield:

And I bet *no one* is ballsy enough to list King Frog on their lists!!!
Whatever this is, I like it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 5:47pm Linda Lee:

hm. the lists i'm seeing are all about fave bands in high school ..
Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 5:48pm JakeGould:

I’m borderline on anyone saying they had a specific Bowie album they were influenced on. I can see that, but also know too many people who simply had “Changes One” to be completely onboard with actual albums being on a list.

from the older folks like myself. mainly big label stuff.

@Jake: It's like, what's the difference between Space Oddity and The Man Who Sold The World and Hunky Dory and Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane...each evolves and changes from the last, but without knowing the track lists by heart how can you place a song to any of those? I like promoting TMWSTW because a lot of people aren't aware of it, but I don't know if it's one of Bowie's "best" conceptual albums.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Mon. 1/16/17 5:53pm JakeGould:

Or in general, most people in their teens were heavy into “Best Of…” comps or soundtracks that had cool tracks more that full albums.

@Jake: yeah, I loved Changes One and didn't generally explore beyond greatest hits albums. That came later.
