Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

melinda's avatar looks like its about to bust its way into Little Danny's avatar!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm melinda:

I like the feeling of moving from one music room to another while I am merely sitting at my computer.
Avatar 10:05pm Little Danny:

Haha, tell Misa "Oh I'm so sorry I didn't bring that record with me tonight"
Avatar 10:06pm Little Danny:

I like that too, Melinda! It's like the best house party in the world

In another life I am calling my radio show Giant Muskie on the Move.
Avatar 10:08pm Flash Strap:

wow, this Bat'ya is amazing! I've only heard that Bat'ya Exodus of yours, LD
Avatar 10:08pm coelacanth∅:

Pee Wee is a tad Mose Allisonish, i reckon.
Avatar 10:08pm Little Danny:

@Kris tell Misa "I'll bring it next week" in a sincere voice please!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08pm melinda:

I would listen to that show, Doug.

Avatar 10:10pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 10:10pm coelacanth∅:

Doug, on your other Life's show do you sometimes have other species of fish as guests?
  10:10pm MrFab:

My daughter became a bit of a Slim Gaillard fan when she was 4 or so, after I played him in my car. This was one of her faves, she used to call it "Balloon."
Avatar 10:11pm geezerette:

Avatar 10:12pm Little Danny:

MrFab: not surprisingly yer daughter has excellent tastes
Avatar 10:12pm Kris Holmes:

one of our cats chewed the corner of my (previously) mint Slim Gailliard LP on Dot, i think it was Otis...
Avatar 10:13pm Little Danny:

Cats are big Slim Gaillard fans so that's unusual
Avatar 10:13pm hyde:

@Kris ha. my first cat was a plastic chewer. i had my good LP's in plastic bags. this was not ideal.
Avatar 10:14pm Kris Holmes:

I also thrifted the Slim & Slam 78rpm album but none of the 78s were in it, instead there was a lone Dizzy Gillespie 78.
Avatar 10:15pm Kris Holmes:

yeah they love LPs in plastic on shelves. perfect climbing & clawing incentives
Avatar 10:15pm coelacanth∅:

LD i knew that was possible as i said it. if you're pretty familiar with Crayton - as a qualification! - would you say it's probable Mose was influenced by him?
Avatar 10:15pm geezerette:

Orientalist lightshow.
Avatar 10:16pm Little Danny:

Coel: I love Mose but I actually don't know specific artists who influenced him early on. Now I'm curious - any of you google hounds want to look into this?
Avatar 10:21pm coelacanth∅:

i'll give it a shot, but i think this one will end up being speculative.
Avatar 10:21pm geezerette:

I'm just going to sit in this corner booth with a few martinis and draw on cocktail napkins with my shades on.
Avatar 10:21pm Kris Holmes:

Pee Wee Crayton was pretty big at that time in the early 50s, those Modern/Aladdin/Imperial sides were popular & R&B hits, so it's entirely possible
Avatar 10:25pm Flash Strap:

hahahaa I have listened to hours of consecutive Slim Gaillard tracks before.... end to end till it all made sense... I guess I have the constitution for it! Love his philological, glossolaliac ways
Avatar 10:27pm Kris Holmes:

In high school he listened to the music of Louis Armstrong, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Louis Jordan, and his prime inspiration, Nat Cole of the King Cole Trio. playing piano and singing in a style influenced by Nat Cole, Louis Jordan and Erroll Garner. blending the raw blues of his childhood with modern pianistic influences of John Lewis, Thelonius Monk and Al Haig. His vocal style was influenced by blues singers Percy Mayfield and Charles Brown.
Avatar 10:27pm Little Danny:

That's awesome Flash. I don't know why I chose Gaillard to dump on
Avatar 10:28pm Kris Holmes:

Nat Cole, Charles Brown & Percy Mayfield are pretty telling signposts for Mose.
Avatar 10:29pm coelacanth∅:

g, i'm going to sit over in this corner, with a book and my lemon-ginger-echinacea juice with irish whiskey...and occasionally sneakily look toward you to see if you've removed your shades for a moment.
Avatar 10:30pm Flash Strap:

well, I mean, it IS a lot of MACVOOTY! MACVOUTY!
Avatar 10:31pm Little Danny:

Wow, that's terrific info Kris. Makes sense, tho now I want to go down a rabbit hole of all the artists you listed
Avatar 10:31pm Kris Holmes:

i just copied from a Mose bio
Avatar 10:32pm hyde:

me, i'm gonna sit over in this other corner and drink a little rye. i am going to try to avoid any eye contact with coelacanth or geezerette by reading this copy of Murder Can Be Fun
Avatar 10:33pm Little Danny:

Y'all are hardcore. I'm drinking black tea and thought it felt decadent
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm melinda:

Black tea at night is its own kind of hardcore. I'm drinking lemon water with bitters.
Avatar 10:36pm geezerette:

haha, coel, I'll just peer briefly over the rims to see what you're reading.
Hyde, that'll work! Not turning my head. LD & melinda, very sophisticated !
Avatar 10:36pm hyde:

i only just recently found this Willie Bobo record. it's a good one.
Avatar 10:37pm Kris Holmes:

great bobo album this one
Avatar 10:37pm Little Danny:

I think it's one of Bobo's best Verve LPs
Avatar 10:38pm Little Danny:

I really need to put together a book of drink recipes based on the exotic tipples that have come up in this show's comments over the last few months
  10:39pm MrFab:

Hmm, thought this was Arsenio Rodriguez.Muy bueno.
Avatar 10:40pm coelacanth∅:

the bar i go to, when i go to a bar, does not serve black tea; but they do have kombucha tea, if you're interested. people often mix it with liquor.
Avatar 10:41pm Kris Holmes:

i'm trying to think but back in the mid-90s there was a great series of CD comps that i think Capitol put out in cardboard covers (digi paks) with cartoon illustrations on the front, i have the Crayton one in storage & it is outstanding, all the Imperial sides. It's his best stuff.
Avatar 10:41pm geezerette:

Ramos Fizz. No idea what's in it, no one knows how to make them, but had one once & it was so good.
  10:42pm MrFab:

Write it, Danny, write it! Would have a place of honor in my living room corner tiki-bar book 'n' cocktailware shelves.
Avatar 10:43pm coelacanth∅:

i'm already committed to expanding my horizon in the Pee Wee Crayton direction.
-and Thanks for sharing that info Kris, by the way.
Avatar 10:43pm Little Danny:

Yeah, thanks Kris! I don't know Crayton's work very well either
Avatar 10:44pm Little Danny:

You have excellent drink memory geezerette, so your brain cells must be doing just fine
Avatar 10:45pm Little Danny:

MrFab: thanks for the vote, I'd definitely want some laudanum or some such to go with this show!
Avatar 10:46pm Kris Holmes:

found it online, this is the best place to start www.amazon.com...
Avatar 10:46pm hyde:

really there needs to be a drink called the Cool Blue Flame. seems like it should be rum and tropical fruit based, with some blue curacao for color. topped with a high proof rum floater that gets lit on fire?
Avatar 10:46pm coelacanth∅:

i've never heard of a "ramos fizz". but not surprising. i tend to keep the mixtures simple. (though i suppose bringing my own bottled juice as a mixer already may complicate things)
Avatar 10:47pm geezerette:

Kris, were the covers by this guy?www.shag.com...
Avatar 10:48pm coelacanth∅:

hyde, yes...and we badass corner dwellers can chuckle as we watch the college boys take shots of it while it's on fire.
Avatar 10:49pm geezerette:

hyde, that sounds great! It sounds like an actual historical cocktail!
Avatar 10:49pm Kris Holmes:

don't think they are by shag
  10:50pm MrFab:

Ha, geezerette, I met Shag a few months ago at an opening at his gallery. And I met Sid and Marty Kroft there too. (Long story.)
Avatar 10:50pm geezerette:

coel, combustible mostaches!
Avatar 10:52pm Kris Holmes:

the whole capitol blues series is pretty cool actually, i looked at the list & remembered i have several others too www.discogs.com...
Avatar 10:52pm geezerette:

Mrfab, wow! No idea the Krofts were still "here"!
They do Uncle Michael's avatar's makeup!
Avatar 10:52pm hyde:

@geezerette i was actually starting to get OK at making old historical and tiki cocktails, but then i sold my house and had to put all of my weird ingredients into storage. someday i'll get them out and create The Cool Blue Flame...
Avatar 10:54pm hyde:

@MrFab whoa! the Kroffts were my childhood. big Land of the Lost fan here.
Avatar 10:55pm coelacanth∅:

that's an excellent pic, g!

and my badass friends did just that in jr. high school. "flaming hoops" we called 'em. shots of "polish fire water" which i think was overproof vodka. i actually don't remember if i did it or not; but i remember the days of pain my friend Joe (one of the 3 Joes) endured.
Avatar 10:56pm geezerette:

Kris,terrific artwork!
Wonder whose?
Avatar 10:59pm Kris Holmes:

Joe Ciardiello www.joeciardiello.com
Avatar 10:59pm geezerette:

hyde, great name for cocktail, would never have thought of it!

coel, glad you survived! :)
Avatar 11:00pm coelacanth∅:

yeah,g - i had one of those starter 'staches too!
Avatar 11:00pm geezerette:

Kris,oh man those are great! Thanks for posting.
Avatar 11:02pm hyde:

@geezerette haha. i'm gonna have to license the name from Little Danny. a portion of the proceeds will go to wfmu.
Avatar 11:04pm geezerette:

Cool Blue Flame and a White Heat.

Hyde, incredible fund raising idea! :D
Avatar 11:07pm Little Danny:

hyde: wow, I'd be honored by such a drink! I'll even try to make it - and post a pic on the playlist!
Avatar 11:07pm geezerette:

Shag/Krofft collabwww.shag.com...
Avatar 11:08pm hyde:

that Raga and the Talas thing was written by Jackie Deshannon? huh.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Doug Schulkind:

You've got one helluva sequence working, Danny.
Avatar 11:09pm coelacanth∅:

i like where this is going.

Avatar 11:11pm hyde:

@LD go for it!
Avatar 11:11pm geezerette:

Kind of Seeds...
Avatar 11:11pm Little Danny:

"I Should Have Known Better" would be a nice name for a novelty drink
  11:11pm MrFab:

That's it Geezerette - got the print signed by all 3 of 'em. Our most major art purchase.
Avatar 11:11pm coelacanth∅:

am i wrong to think Jackie DeShannon doesn't get the attention she deserves?
Avatar 11:12pm coelacanth∅:

yeah, that was seedy!
Avatar 11:12pm geezerette:

Ha! and who hasn't been THERE? (LD@11:11)
Avatar 11:12pm Dano59:

she sure didn't for 'Bette Davis Eyes'
Avatar 11:13pm Kris Holmes:

man that guitar break on this zone v is a real tease :(
Avatar 11:14pm hyde:

@coel agreed
Avatar 11:14pm Dano59:

that novelty drink's name suggests a bad decision - several kinds of liquor served in a hurricane glass ... at a Hard Rock Cafe
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14pm melinda:

I didn't know about her connection to Bette Davis Eyes until a few days ago.
Avatar 11:14pm geezerette:

MrFab,wow! Great stuff! Cheers!
Avatar 11:15pm Little Danny:

Damn straight Coel! She's not easily pigeonhole-able, to her detriment
Avatar 11:15pm Little Danny:

@Dano59 - that's exactly what I picture as well
Avatar 11:16pm Dano59:

JDS's recording of Splendor in the Grass with the Byrds backing her is pretty amazing
  11:16pm MrFab:

I prefer the Dr Demento parody "Marty Feldman Eyes."
Avatar 11:17pm hyde:

i'd like to go back in time and see the band that Jackie Deshannon and Ry Cooder had together in the early 60's
Avatar 11:17pm Little Danny:

Dano59, I almost played that tonight! Brilliant minds etc.
Avatar 11:18pm geezerette:

Little Danny,Best Incorporeal lounge I've ever been to.

MrFab, that's good too!

Avatar 11:19pm Little Danny:

Hi praise, geez - thank you my friend
Avatar 11:20pm Dano59:

ooh this TNK brings me back... I have played it... thinking alike indeed. One of my favorite beatles covers after Petula Clark's Rain.
Avatar 11:21pm Dano59:

and Yo La Tengo's TNK-laced Simpsons theme.
Avatar 11:22pm coelacanth∅:

hmm. i made a playlist of around 55 versions of TNK, alternating with original beatles songs, and i overlooked this one somehow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm melinda:

@MrFab: I remember that but didn't know who was responsible for it.
Avatar 11:23pm Little Danny:

I would love to see that playlist coel, TNK always covers interesting, if not well
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24pm melinda:

There was also "Colonel Sanders Thighs', don't know if it was a song or just a joke someone made in passing.
Avatar 11:24pm Little Danny:

Did not know about the YLT Simpsons theme, now I gotta catch that
Avatar 11:24pm Dano59:

I think it might be on the FMU blog, Danny! maybe...
Avatar 11:25pm coelacanth∅:

it's astounding how many good versions there are of TNK, when the majority of beatles covers aren't very good, in my opinion.
Avatar 11:25pm Little Danny:

Okay if you find it plz post the link! I really wanna check it out
Avatar 11:25pm hyde:

ok, got to stay late tonight for once since i'm not working tomorrow, which was a blast. but have to duck out after this crazy amazing set, so i can get up early enough to drive to Mass. in the AM. good night to all my friends. thanks, Little Danny. the show is dynamite.
Avatar 11:26pm Dano59:

@coel - I need more TNK. My iTunes only yielding Beatles, Chameleons UK, Jr. Parker, and a live version by Robyn Hitchcock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm melinda:

goodnight hyde! I'm turning in, too. ciao!
Avatar 11:27pm coelacanth∅:

a pleasure as always, hyde.

Avatar 11:30pm geezerette:

Good night hyde, melinda, coel !
Avatar 11:32pm coelacanth∅:

i feel slightly uncomfortable directing people toward another source of music online - even though it's unrealistic to think people who relish the variety of music wfmu offers don't also go to other sources. ...but it's a spotify playlist called "tomorrow never knows".
Avatar 11:32pm Dano59:

that Jackie D. call was Hyde's, Danny! I know her work, but not like I know, say, J.D. Loudermilk's
  11:33pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Hi Danny, just got in on a wet and muggy Melb Aus arfternoon, see I've missed a great show, until now. Will listen back when the archive is up. FANTASTIC Dizz tune!!
Avatar 11:33pm coelacanth∅:

g, does that mean you're leaving - or am i?!
Avatar 11:33pm Dano59:

that's OK I don't do Spotify on religious grounds but I will read the list...
Avatar 11:34pm Little Danny:

Oop, sorry Hyde! Credit is all yours
Avatar 11:35pm Little Danny:

Hi Pete! I thought of you during the Randy Carlos track I played earlier. Oh and also the Willie Bobo
Avatar 11:36pm Little Danny:

Hey Danny, will listen both back latter, say whos the guitarist on this Dizz track,?
Avatar 11:37pm geezerette:

coel, great tip.
Thought you were!
Now I think I am.

Thanks Danny! I'm still listening as I dance out the door.
Avatar 11:38pm coelacanth∅:

i have a problem with spotify because i've read stories about artist not getting compensated - or not proportionally. i don't know what's true but i do have concerns i'd like to resolve about it.
  11:38pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Woops there you go George Davis on guitar think theres a great vid of Dizz in 75 with him, resplendant in flares and Afro slingin a big L5, am I right on that, looks like a young black guy, maybe in his 20's?
Avatar 11:39pm coelacanth∅:

oh, okay! goodnight g!
Avatar 11:39pm geezerette:

Hey Pete! Good weekend to you!
Avatar 11:40pm Little Danny:

Pete, it's George Davis. Familiar to you?
  11:41pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Hi geezerette: cheers thanks, same from me
Avatar 11:42pm Little Danny:

I can't deal with Spotify, either. Or rather, I just never find myself using it.
Avatar 11:45pm Dano59:

@coel- my understanding is Spotify made deals with the labels not the artists, paying fractions of pennys vs. actual royalty rates, and all catalog recorded before, I think, 1975 yields NO artist royalties. Eric Roscoe Ambel and others have been vocal opponents.
  11:46pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

George Davis wrote the Nevile bros monster 'Tell it Like It Is in 66!! He's a New Orleans cat Pretty sure he is on Dizzy's video of a live concert in France in 73 or 4 or 5, GREAT vid, got it on VHS some place
Avatar 11:46pm Dano59:

A couple of these zodiac sex-sign albums were up on Basic Hip Digital Oddio last year. Strange artifacts of their time.
Avatar 11:49pm Little Danny:

Dano59: that Lord Calvin track was basically a blacklight astrology poster in sound
  11:53pm Pete from Melbourne Austraila:

Soul Merchants track For Wes rules!!
Avatar 11:56pm coelacanth∅:

Dano - that's worse than i thought, but i'm not too surprised.
that really sucks because i support artists when i can. i buy physical copies and pay for flac files from bandcamp. ...but i cannot afford much, and i have an unquenchable thirst.
Avatar 11:56pm Little Danny:

Haha, I knew you'd dig it Pete
Avatar 12:03am coelacanth∅:
