hi Michael and everyone! Galt MacDermot had something to do with Hair, interesting to hear this.

More than a little Squeeze influence in that Tripwires song. That's a good thing.
Avatar 11:21am Juke Joint Jonny:

You said it Gaylord. Sounded to me a little like a Records record, too.
Avatar 11:22am SmokinJ:

Squeeze's influence almost outdo themselves.. That's a good thing ;-)

JJJ: Yep, they're definitely influenced by the pub rock wing of what we called new wave back then.

  11:30am Pascal Panelak:

Totally with you regarding no problem! Greetings from Budapest :-)
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:31am Uncle Michael:

No problem in lieu of you're welcome drives me nuts.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:32am patrick321:

Razza is my favorite pizza, and yes everyone there is super polite. I also go to Porta but I think of that as more of a bar.
Avatar 11:33am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...if you're the paying customer, & you are not unreasonable - you're darn tootin' yer no problem...
  11:33am Roger:

"You're welcome". To what? You are welcome to my consideration, to my help, my personal regard. "You're welcome" lifts one from servile gratitude to a peer relation with the other. Consider these alternatives: "No problem". If it were, would you have let the door slam in my face or given me incorrect change? "Sure". Was the truth value of my Thank you ever in question? "You got it". Do I?
Avatar 11:33am Juke Joint Jonny:

Maybe they make a positive effort to only hire jerks?
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:33am Richard:

Can't wait for Super Hits Of the Seventies: PURE DYN-O-MITE! Another impressive line-up!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am ChrisB.:

"No problem" implies that there could be a problem, that he/she will graciously choose to overlook.
  11:34am Little Fyodor:

Something to consider about "no problem". In Spanish "de nada" is the response. Literally it means "it's nothing", pretty much the same thing. Is everyone speaking Spanish being impolite? (My point is "no" in case there's any question!)
  11:34am Dean:

The problem now with "You're welcome" is that it happens to be the refrain from the latest Disney smash movie soundtrack, akin to "Let it go" a couple years ago.
  11:35am Dean:

Too bad the Disney writers didn't appropriate "No problem."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am ChrisB.:

While we're on it, let's bring back "Your servant, sir!" as a response to an introduction.
Avatar 11:35am Juke Joint Jonny:

But "let it go" would be the perfect replacement for "no problem."
Avatar 11:36am HarktheUmpire:

I dunno.. Berlin is famous for impolite service, or rather disinterested service, which can be annoying. But then when I visited the States recently, getting "HIHOWAREYOU!!!" shouted at me any place I entered got on my nerves more quickly. I also wasn't too charmed with being asked whether I'm okay every five minutes, especially since everyone knows it's just policy (stimulating consumption/tips)
, nothing to do with genuine politeness. It's a personal preference I guess.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:36am Uncle Michael:

Itching to tell Michael Fennelly about this cover!
Avatar 11:36am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Maybe we could solve some problems if we stopped worrying about whether people said "no problem".
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:36am Listener Baby:

Frank. That is so rocking! Please keep doing what you are doing. Great!
  11:36am Dean:

Why don't servers just cut to the chase with "Up yours!"?
  11:37am davefromtoronto:

what about when you say thanks and the server says "umm hmm?"

i noticed that alot while driving south through the states.
Avatar 11:38am Juke Joint Jonny:

"Thank you!"

"Pound sand, loser."
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Listener Baby:

Baby. Whose song was that in the first place?
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:38am Uncle Michael:

"If I thought asking you to refill my water would be a *problem*, I never would have bothered you...or come here in the first place."
  11:38am Clarke:

despite my being down on covers in general - this Crabby Appleton version is GREAT - it took some elements that i was not too fond of, on the original out - and put in some good singing.
  11:39am lloyd michigan:

Barry and The Remains?
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:39am Uncle Michael:

What didn't you like about the original?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:39am ChrisB.:

@dave: that means they've already exceeded their customer word count for the shift.
  11:39am Dean:

Or customers could preempt the situation and first ask the server, "You'll tell me if there's a problem?"
Avatar 11:41am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

The intention is the thing. It's Service. I'm paying - you're working - you aren't doing me a favor because it's convenient. The phony thing Hark is talking about - that's just as annoying - to me it's like - buy some schizzle & move on - don't just enjoy yourself here...
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:41am Uncle Michael:

Reminds me of the Catskill resort waiter:

Ladies, is anything alright?"
  11:42am lloyd michigan:

I was thinking of "Don't Look Back"
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:42am Listener Baby:

Go Back is such a great choice. Really surprised it lasted till Volume 5? Then again, I had completely forgotten about it too.
  11:42am davefromtoronto:

this is the "first world problems" edition of the show!
  11:43am Clarke:

i am not a huge fan of congas in rock and roll - plus the guitar is a bit too fuzzed out on the original Go Back - i was always wishing Crabby hadn't made so many post-psych choices on that whole album
  11:43am lloyd michigan:

Rockpile tribute show
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:45am Uncle Michael:

Fair enough, Clarke. De gustibus non est disputandum, as they say.
  11:46am Dean:

"Thank you" [for bringing me the glass of water I requested].

"Huh. De gustibus..."
  11:46am Clarke:

as for me being down on covers: just too many people doing covers instead of writing new material - and then too many people covering obvious or very commonplace songs and not adding much to them
  11:48am Clarke:

and speaking of ORIGINAL songwriting - holsapple takes the friggin' CAKE!!!!
  11:49am lloyd michigan:

@Clarke, I agree. It's annoying when they basically replicate the original.
Avatar 11:49am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Mungo Jerry worked with Jackie Edwards.
Avatar 11:49am herb.nyc:

Hi all. Michael's premium hits CDs are siempre fun. As for "no problem", that sorta bothers me (tho tone and body gesture are important too). I can get strict on "number of" vs "amount of", or if "meddling" or "subtlety" has 2or3 syllables, or the overuse of "through the lens of", but I try not to think about it too much. Esp when I enjoy playing w wurdz and da rules of grandma. Fin.
  11:49am Clarke:

but, tis the bass-line that takes this song to new places - JUDY!!!!
Avatar 11:50am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...tho' I would rather be asked too much than not enuff - yerknow - it' just possible someone might want more coffee, if it never quite occurred to you @ such a place...& so on...
A great song is catnip to Artists - a Cover should show me something / make me feel something new or different about the song...&/or just plain dazzle by comparison - tho' a faithful cover can possibly impress that way (like if it's hard to do).
  11:52am Clarke:

i think my recent aversion to covers (hey, i love playing them - they are FUN to do!) has to do with WHY someone is choosing to release a cover instead of writing something new.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am melinda:

If you're in a service position you're never going to please everyone. Some people want lots of attention and deference, others find it annoying or are indifferent.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 11:53am Listener Baby:

I'm a "leave me alone, till I ask you" kind of hombre.
  11:54am lloyd michigan:

A really good server can sense how much attention the customer wants. I was NOT a good server. :)
  11:55am Clarke:

i think that doing a covers 'album' for a cause is a fine idea, btw -- i mean, a specific project with those parameters i can get behind. also, there is a lot of taste going into the mix with MS's comps
Avatar 11:55am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Well - the customer shouldn't be a dick either. Altogether - it's asking too much...
  11:56am lloyd michigan:

I don't think anyone has covered "Bigfoot"
Avatar 11:57am Marc Francis:

Damn! What a song.
  11:57am Clarke:

also - another thing that can be aggravating about some covers is when there is a radical change to the original - why didn't you just write another song around the new riff????
  11:58am Dean:

On "Three Hearts" Bob Welch covers "I Saw Her Standing There." It's...different.
Avatar 11:58am Juke Joint Jonny:

This Rachel Sweet is unbeatable.
  11:58am lloyd michigan:

Akron's finest! (Next to CH)
  11:58am Clarke:

i LOVE bob welch and that record - but i do not care for that cover - perfect example
Avatar 11:59am Juke Joint Jonny:

Ooo ta ta ta.
  12:00pm Clarke:

besides - why would ANYone in their right mind try to cover the beatles???
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00pm Parq:

Who does Liza leak?
  12:00pm Dean:

Re-purchased the Bob Welch LP yesterday. I had totally forgotten about the Beatles cover. The highlights of the record tend to revolve around the appearance of Christine McVie.

Second the "unbeatable" re: this Rachel Sweet.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:01pm Listener Baby:

Ouch Baby!
  12:01pm Clarke:

three hearts in a tangle
  12:01pm lloyd michigan:

@Clarke Have you heard Lady Madonna by Fats Domino?
  12:02pm Clarke:

obviously the previous two bob welch records are superior - but there are still a coupla gems on 3 hearts
  12:03pm Dean:

Examples of covers that transcend their sources (both Neil Young tunes): Roxy Music's "Like a Hurricane" and Dave Rawlings Machine's "Cortez the Killer."
  12:03pm Clarke:

yeah - i don't dig it - and i LOVE fats - who doesn't
  12:03pm Dean:

And Paris?
  12:04pm lloyd michigan:

Wow. One of my favorite fab 4 covers.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:04pm Listener Baby:

In the Springtime?
  12:04pm Clarke:

i like some of Paris
  12:06pm Dean:

Speaking of covers and "Paris in the Springtime," Jonathan and Darlene Edwards manage well to own their renditions.
  12:06pm Clarke:

to me, the beatles are the apex - and nearly impossible to equal much less top
however, i LOVE beatle-esque bands - even rip-offs - as long as they write their own stuff.
  12:08pm mrmucho:

i'm still listening to that bill fox song from last week about 5x a day
  12:09pm Clarke:

of course there are exceptions to every rule - ha ha - i love the Spampinato Bros version of I'll Be Back
  12:09pm davefromtoronto:

btw exactly how does a tune qualify as "fake beatles?"

  12:10pm Clarke:

ALL Bill Fox songs are as rewarding as the one that MS played!!! a real genius.
  12:11pm Clarke:

Knickerbockers "Lies" and thousands more
  12:13pm Clarke:

the Utopia record that MS played last week...love it!!
  12:14pm lloyd michigan:

Are the Davenports the band who sing the MS Show jingles? Sounds like 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:14pm thriftstoreleather:

I like That song

Avatar 12:21pm Melissa Jean:

  12:21pm Clarke:

later - one thing that is NOT brilliant is having to go somewhere in the middle of this show...grrrr...
Avatar 12:24pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Wow, great Slade cover! As much as it pains me to do so, this will in all likelihood necessitate my pledging to this show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:24pm Gaylord Fields:

@davefromtoronto: Too many criteria, but original songs that evoke some direct aspect of the Beatles' canon — chord changes, production, vocal harmonies (the more, the fab-er).
Avatar 12:25pm Marc Francis:

The Wonder Stuff do a fantastic cover of this!
Avatar 12:25pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

@Gaylord Fields: sorry to use this public forum people to save a phone call, but don't forget you are judging The Soul Clap at Monty Hall tonight!

@Clarke: I've been watching Laugh-In on the Decades channel lately, so I'll be going full Pigmeat when it comes to judging.
  12:28pm Clarke:

howsa bout a MS box set???
  12:30pm Clarke:

@Pigmeat - if you wanna share how to watch FULL laugh-in episodes here - i won't judge
  12:31pm fdny john:

really excited to here from dirty looks drummer peter parker. stiff records first american band and staten islanders at that!
  12:31pm davefromtoronto:

are there any bands that had big careers exploiting the "fake beatles" formula?

besides the rutles.
Avatar 12:31pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

The third original covered on "Seconds Of Pleasure"...slick move trying to see if anyone is paying attention.
  12:32pm Clarke:

i guess the Decades channel would involve owning a television??
Avatar 12:33pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Gaylord, your going full pigmeat is a rare event. You still indulge in your annual hot dog?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:33pm Gaylord Fields:

@Clarke: Or having friends.
  12:34pm Clarke:

  12:35pm Clarke:

well, i guess i won't be seeing laugh-in
Avatar 12:36pm Juke Joint Jonny:

Hmmm… Motown beat Rockpile "Heart"? or Nick The Knife reggae Nick Lowe "Heart"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:36pm Gaylord Fields:

@JJJ: I've slacked off on my one hot dog a year since Gray's Papaya closed. But in November I ate a White Castle burger in honor of Billy Miller.
Avatar 12:37pm Juke Joint Jonny:

A beautiful tribute!

The Rockpile album WAS a letdown to me.
  12:37pm Clarke:

nice gesture gaylord!!!! also DELICIOUS!!!
  12:37pm max:

love that you played rockpile! i was digging all the other songs from seconds of pleasure already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:38pm Gaylord Fields:

@davefromtoronto: There have been hits here and there, but not really a sustained hitmaking career for anyone I can recall.
Avatar 12:38pm Todd-o-phonic Todd:

To be fair...I think "Seconds Of Pleasure" sounds better today than it did upon release. The big problem for me was that I felt both Edmunds and Lowe were doing solo albums at that time with better material.
Avatar 12:38pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

One thing about Covers : sooo many Originals I wouldn't have known about w/out them. Hopefully not then the 'Pat Boone Effect' of stealing their marketshare...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:39pm Gaylord Fields:

And I only got my typcial post-White Castle wooziness from back when I was carnivorous instead of especially sick.
  12:40pm Clarke:

to me, todd, it was ALL Rockpile - they just figured out a way to get a ton of releases sneakily.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:42pm Uncle Michael:

Exactly, Todd. The Rockpile album came too late. If they could have done it at the time of the Labour of Lust/Repeat When Necessary sessions, it could have been something great.
  12:42pm Clarke:

i mean, the same guys play on all those records
Swag For Life Member 12:42pm tadpoles:

Ramrods - Sounded like Elvis doing the Bonzos doing Elvis backed by the Attractions!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:43pm Gaylord Fields:

Sounds like Mickey Champion sang, "I wanna holler, but the giant's too small!" Just not scary enough for his liking, I suppose.
Avatar 12:44pm dk50b:

Think Rockville was trying to emulate The King? Oh well the song's left the building.
  12:44pm Clarke:

i don't know - i think that "one" Rockpile record got a ton of acclaim and sales....
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:45pm Uncle Michael:

Clarke, they couldn't record as Rockpile before then because Nick and Dave had separate contracts with different labels. They were each hording the best material for their own albums. They weren't being sneaky.

Screw Rockpile, Baby More J.D. !

JD McPherson at Roxy & Duke's in Dunellen,NJ on Friday March 10th:
  12:46pm Clarke:

yeah - i know - but it is the same band on all those records. that's pretty unsneakily sneaky
  12:48pm Clarke:

what's Roxy & Duke's all about todd?? sounds like an interesting venue...
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Uncle Michael:

For example, Dave recorded "Endless Gray Ribbon" for Repeat, Nick decided he liked it too much and took it back. They weren't finding a way to make extra, secret Rockpile records...they were bandmates, but competitive. Nothing sneaky about this at all. They had separate obligations.
Avatar #1 Hit Supporter Marathon 2021 Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Listener Baby:

worthy of two spins, for sure!
  12:51pm Clarke:

ha ha - you just said secret - not sneaky?
  12:51pm Clay Pigeon:

Go Back! Makes me think of Crabby Appleton's version. Sounding Great, Michael ....
