Yes, a soul-warming playlist is precisely what is called for today, here. Good morning, Meghan, how good to hear you once again.

  9:40am Jefff:

Underwater schoolroom!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Mike East:

Love it when the fillin DJ sticks to the format of the DJ they're filling in for...Good morning, all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46am Meghan:

You can't NOT have reggae at this hour..... It's just not right....
Avatar 9:53am Sem Chumbo:

Relaxed, relaxed, relaxed. Another Red Stripe over here, mon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Meghan, substitute teacher. I forgot my homework, though. And forgot to bring you an apple. Will sit quietly now.
Avatar 10:10am listener mark:

I wish I was in Jamaica, sitting in an air conditioned bar, drinking beer. Instead I'm in upstate New York, sitting in my freezing house, drinking beer.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am Meghan:

At least you got the beer part going for you.... maybe turn your heat up and open the door.... that could create the same effect, yes?
Avatar 10:22am listener mark:

The music creates a great effect. If I close my eyes, it's like I'm there right now!
Avatar 10:23am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Jeff does a great job with Reggae Schoolroom, but your selections are *much* more in keeping with my reggae tastes, Meghan. Great stuff, keep it coming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am Meghan:

Thanks..... I've got a certain taste in songs.... but granted, I don't do this every week!
  10:29am Sean d:

me like ladies
Avatar 10:32am the Canterbury wood-elf:

I saw The Black Seeds when I was out in NZ a couple of years ago, at the Kaikoura Roots Festival. They're what dismissively gets called "barbecue reggae" out there...
Avatar 10:33am the Canterbury wood-elf:

protest suggestion: "Fire On Babylon" by Sinead O'Connor.
  10:34am ?:

Monica - anything with babylon, israelite or system can be a protest song in reggae. also, check out pu puku pu by no maddz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Meghan:

great suggestions..... keep them coming!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Ken From Hyde Park:

These guys compiled a list: www.jamaicans.com...
  10:37am ripe reggae:

New Zealand has a massive reggae scene.
eg..Fat Freddie's Drop,Trinty Roots, Kora, cornerstone roots, Katchafire..Just to name a few..
Rita Marley's sound is one of the best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Meghan:

I didn't know New Zealand was a hotbed of reggae! I'll have to do some more digging there!
Avatar 10:39am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@ripe_reggae Are you out in NZ? Whereabouts?
Avatar 10:42am the Canterbury wood-elf:

@Meghan The Maori population are a major part of the scene out there. Bob Marley visited in 1976 (I think) and got an official tribal welcome. Since then, it's become a massive thing. Also the country apparently has the highest per capita marijuana consumption in the world!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am Ken From Hyde Park:

There is "Solidarity" from Black Uhuru and "Working Class Hero" from Bushman.
  10:44am ripe reggae:

Nah live in Palm Beach,Fl..
Listen to this show every week..
Avatar 10:48am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Meghan! I keep trying to get up to go to printer, but then you drop another HEAVY tune and i'm stuck here wired to my laptop...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:50am Meghan:

You need some bluetooth headphones!
  10:51am Bytheriver:

How about "War"?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Meghan:

Of course! I think I pulled that one yesterday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am patrick321:

Hi Meghan! Patrick and Erika are digging your show this morning!
  10:54am Bytheriver:

Thanks, Meghan. Great show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Mike East:

I've had many discussions about this Scratch track...when he says he's gonna put on an iron shirt...does he mean he's going to put on a shirt that has been ironed? That was always my take, but you never know with all the possible slang that I'm unaware of.
  10:55am SeanG:

Morning Meghan, nice to hear you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Meghan:

good question. Jeff thinks it's iron, like a protective shirt.... I thought ironed, like he dressed up nice.... ha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:57am Mike East:

Yeah, Meghan - I used to debate with my buddy about it. Could go either way.
Avatar 11:03am the Canterbury wood-elf:

The singing-stuff-over-other-people's-records thing goes back to the early days of soundclash/DJ culture in Jamaica. People like U-Roy would 'toast' over special dub versions of popular tunes to get the crowd going... this became an artform in its own right, and some of the early DJs started releasing records in this format. Arguably this is the true roots of hiphop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:04am Ken From Hyde Park:

On the lines of protest, how about el Cheeto going off on Rep. John Lewis? Lewis was part of the 60s civil rights movement. Note that this friction comes on MLK weekend. Sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Meghan:

Yeah, it's a sad fact.... Let's hope some good music and art from from the next 4 years as a form of protest....
  11:24am ?:

big ups. Thanks for playing that frightnrs track. Great group of hard working guys
  11:25am Bytheriver:

Manu Chao is the best. "Clandestino" is a terrific song.
Avatar 11:36am Pbdfender:

Loving your show! Rejoicing! Thanks and praises! I second the suggestion of "War"
Avatar 11:36am Sem Chumbo:

Spliff-a-licious morning, Ms. M. Learning my lessons well this morning.
Avatar 11:39am coelacanth∅:

crap! i can't believe i've been up since 830 and missed most of this theme (park)!
...and, good morning.
  11:40am Stevel:

A pleasant Sunday surprise! Thanks for the rhythms.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Meghan:

Coelacanth.... there is always archives, and don't forget, I'm back next week!!
Avatar 11:44am coelacanth∅:

Thank you. i favorited the episode already!
-is Jeff okay?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am Meghan:

He's fine! He's in Jamaica, lucky man!
Avatar 11:45am coelacanth∅:

ha, nice!
Avatar 11:49am coelacanth∅:

is "the ska" different than skanking?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Meghan:

skanking is the dance.... or at least that is how I perceive it
Avatar 11:52am Sem Chumbo:

Been great, always a pleasure, Meghan. Catch you next fill-in. Bye!
Avatar 11:56am coelacanth∅:

right -they were singing "do the ska",and i imagined it just like a faster skank.
Avatar 12:01pm coelacanth∅:

Thanks Meghan!
...reggae protest songs?
  1:40pm LIMBO NYC:
