Postwar atmospherica. High bop modernism and Afro-Latin sounds, twilight exotica and soundtrack moods, soul stompers and weepers, hypnotic R&B and blues, mystical '60s pop, lonely country, lonelier rock 'n' roll, instrumental weirdness, electronic creaking. Bringing worlds beyond into the worlds at hand.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm ifny:

Gorgeous vibes. No pun intended.
  10:03pm MrFab:

Great to be here in the Blue Flame lounge. *snaps fingers* Er, bartender?
Avatar 10:03pm Little Danny:

Another brilliant show tonight, Flash!
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

ifny: thanks, and yes! Vibes are the most gorgeous of all be-mallet-ed instruments
Avatar 10:04pm Little Danny:

Whoooaaa MrFab! Long time no see my friend!
Avatar 10:06pm hyde:

whoa, this is some hoppin' Stan Getz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Doug Schulkind:

Stane Getz was an unpleasant bastard, but he sure could lick that stick.
Avatar 10:08pm northguineahills:

I've never heard this Stan Getz number, weird.
  10:08pm MrFab:

Working 2nd shift now, so no more archives for me. I will be LIVE, to get me thru my work-night.
Avatar 10:08pm Little Danny:

Hi Hyde! Getz's early records are some of my fave bebop. That tone!
Avatar 10:08pm northguineahills:

If you were on w/drawel from heroin all the time, you'd be an unpleasant bastard as well, Doug ;)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Alex In Illinois:

Hmm, I don't think I have ever read or seen a single Stan Getz interview, and I think that explains why.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Doug Schulkind:

True dat, northguineahills.
Avatar 10:09pm Little Danny:

@Doug: do tell - is there a personal encounter somewhere in there?
Avatar 10:09pm still b/p:

In another life, I'd like to play vibes. And with little foundation, somehow think I'd be more suited to that instrument choice than many others. Cuz in another life, I can just say it's so.

Was just thinking the other day about unpleasant bastards other musicians worked for -- Benny Goodman, James Brown...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm melinda:

hi LD and friends
Avatar 10:11pm Little Danny:

NGH, Alex in IL, still b/p, Melinda! So glad you're here, I was getting worried...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12pm Scraps:

She's into it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm ifny:

Thank you thank you thank you...this set here is xmas music antitoxin in its purest form.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13pm ifny:

I feel the nausea receding already.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Doug Schulkind:

@Little Danny
Indeed there was. Saw Getz perform in a smallish but famous club in D.C. in the late '70s/early '80s. Stood front and center stage while soloing, but then remained there, mugging with audience members while his bandmates were soloing. They were clearly miffed, but betrayed nothing while the boss was facing them. It was the rudest thing I ever saw on a bandstand. He deserved a cymbal in the back of the neck.
Avatar 10:14pm Little Danny:

Welcome Scraps!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14pm Uncle Michael:

Diggin' the yiddishkeit jazz!!
Avatar 10:15pm hyde:

@Doug heh
Avatar 10:15pm Little Danny:

Uncle Michael - the stars are coming out tonight! And thanks!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:17pm Alex In Illinois:

But there is that story of Benny Goodman refusing to agree with the movie studio to portray the black members of his orchestra as waiters who happen join the orchestra rather than professional musicians.
Avatar 10:17pm Little Danny:

Man I'm so glad to hear that ifny. My normally low tolerance for xmas music has been replace by an absolute disgust with it this year
Avatar 10:18pm northguineahills:

Yo's, LD!
Avatar 10:18pm still b/p:

Heard Joel Grey interview the other night talking about his dad, Mickey Katz, who'd been with Spike Jones also doing his own Yiddish adaptations of Home on the Range and all kinds of things. Perfect maybe for a Danny or Uncle or Drummer to dig into...or maybe been dug already.
Avatar 10:19pm Flash Strap:

I gotta run, but this set has been 100% heaven in my ears

thanks LD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:19pm Uncle Michael:

I've played just one Mickey Katz record, I believe.
Avatar 10:21pm still b/p:

Hah, nice! You played Hinky Dinky Vais Ich Voos!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm Uncle Michael:

It's the Mickey Katz version in my vast collection of Hinky Dinky Parlay Voo 78s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

I've been thinking about last week's discussion of winter music, melancholy & cool vs. upbeat and warm, and now that it's 7.1 degrees outside I'm really appreciating the hot tunes.
Avatar 10:23pm still b/p:

This Portland wind RATTLIN' the hell out of your windows like mine, Melinda?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Uncle Michael:

We're supposed to go from 41 tomorrow afternoon to -3 Sunday morning. I don't think music can fix that.
Avatar 10:24pm hyde:

sigh, gotta go,this is great. will listen while crashing. THANKS!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm ifny:

@Little Danny Yer not alone. My ears break out in rashes and my glycemic index goes through the roof.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Uncle Michael:

I'm soon to do the same, hyde.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm Doug Schulkind:

It's 8°F here now and will be 55°F by Saturday noon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm JtotheK:

good evening everyone. digging the tunes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm melinda:

@b/p: my windows are fairly tight, but the wind was fierce today while I was walking around downtown. Sandwich boards blown hither and yon.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26pm Scraps:

I love Don Byron's album playing Katz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm JtotheK:

@Little Danny - re: Christmas music -- I watched a cool documentary last night 'Jingle Bell Rocks' about Christmas Music collectors...recommended! (WFMU's Irwin makes an appearance!)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm ifny:

@melinda @still b/p Is there Cascadia in the house?? Vancouver BC here.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm JtotheK:

And weather report here - a balmy 6 degrees. with a high of -5 on Sunday.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm ifny:

@Little Danny If you've ever seen a cat fall in the pool, that's me when xmas music comes on. No thoughts, just outoutoutoutoutout in my furbrain.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31pm melinda:

@ifny: we're in Portland, Maine. I like to call it Little Portland.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm ifny:

Euphonium 100%!!!!!!!!!!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm melinda:

I've been interested in the melodica lately.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm ifny:

Also violin makes me cry. As does accordion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm ifny:

@melinda sorry. I got excited. We're all having an actual winter in Cascadia so I just assumed. It's been below freezing here for a week and it's like climate change is real or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm ifny:

@Little Danny and the theremin, in the right hands.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35pm melinda:

No prob, ifny. Below freezing in Vancouver sounds extreme, it even feels kind of weird here after the warm autumn.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Alex In Illinois:

I often have to practice my accordion when my wife is not at home.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm ifny:

Yeah, it's going to be a skating rink on Monday night after the rain starts again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Alex In Illinois:

The concertina is not as loud, so I can get away with that a little more.
Avatar 10:37pm Little Danny:

@ifny - the accordion for certain! I used to neutral about it but I love it so much now
Avatar 10:37pm still b/p:

Last few years I got a thing for organ, like in this Lazar track right heah! And love to hear an instrument I normally wouldn't seek out suddenly getting interesting, cool and thrilling....Dorothy Ashby on harp....real harp.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Scraps:

I'm in the boonies north of Seattle. Vancouver BC is one of my favorite cities. Envy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm melinda:

My dad used to bring his accordion on camping trips.
Which was fine on isolated private property but didn't go over well at larger campgrounds with other campers.
Avatar 10:38pm Little Danny:

J2tK: thanks for trooping over to the bonanza!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm melinda:

I do like vibes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39pm Alex In Illinois:

When I practice the accordion, the dog stares at the door hoping my wife will come home soon.
Avatar 10:40pm still b/p:

My Dad practiced accordion a few years at home when I was growing up. Now -- turning 90 next month -- he plays the bones in Irish sessions.
  10:41pm MrFab:

My chord organ can get that Nico harmonium drone sound.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Scraps:

Vibes is the best. Almost always, vibes playing put me in a better mood.
Avatar 10:42pm Little Danny:

Vibes, sitars, bagpipes: I know I'm forgetting some other drone instruments...
Avatar 10:43pm Little Danny:

Nico could spook the heck out of an harmonium MrFab!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm ifny:

We have a decent accordion scene in Vancouver. There's the Accordion Noir festival annually accordionnoirfest.com & its accompanying radio show on Vancouver Coop Raio.
Avatar 10:44pm Little Danny:

@melinda: I love that yer dad brought the accordion on camping trips
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm ifny:

But it's no Romania.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm melinda:

Danny at the time it was embarrassing but in retrospect I like it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47pm Alex In Illinois:

I play the bones at the monthly Sea Shanty sing.
Avatar 10:47pm still b/p:

If you'd told us back in the 70s that by now some cool young adults would be happy to learn and play Slavic and Balkan accordion music...we'da been surprised and skeptical to say the least.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Scraps:

All public activities of parents are embarrassing to children. Well, adolescents.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48pm Alex In Illinois:

Balkan music, like those Kopanitsas in 11/16 meter.
Avatar 10:50pm northguineahills:

I've never heard this cover, it's a gauze of beauty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Scraps:

This cover is cool, cool, cool. Nice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm melinda:

Yes, very nice.
Avatar 10:53pm Little Danny:

Thanks y'all, I'm with you. I'm not totally convinced of Fleetwood Mac's greatness but this take on "Dreams" is certainly mesmerizing
Avatar 10:53pm northguineahills:

I'm more of a Tusk guy, when it comes to Fleetwood Mac, a very unsung album.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56pm Scraps:

Tusk has gained admirers in the years since.
Avatar 10:56pm northguineahills:

Bob James sounds rather different here then he did w/ Robert Ashley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00pm Scraps:

I mostly like Bob James, even when he's scorned as Jazz Lite. Like Ralph Towner also in the seventies, his taste rises above his genre.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01pm Doug Schulkind:

Uncle Michael closes Hinky Dinky Time with FM's "Albatross" every week and it makes me want to weep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08pm JtotheK:

re: Bob James - this conversation reminds me I've yet to hear 'Explosions' by Bob James Trio on the ESP label.
Avatar 11:09pm northguineahills:

@JtotheK: You must!
Avatar 11:13pm Little Danny:

Man I'm so Bob James ignorant. "Two" is all I know. Is his ESP disc typical ESP out fare? Hard to imagine either way
Avatar 11:14pm northguineahills:

Yeah, It has both Morton Subotnick and Robert Ashley on it. (I wish my records weren't boxed up).
  11:15pm MrFab:

It's pretty wild. i seem to recall some sound-collage elements to it?
Avatar 11:16pm Little Danny:

Whoa, now I really need to hear that
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16pm JtotheK:

ok dudes if this 'explosions' chatter keeps up i'm going to cave and order it ... must control urge to purchase impulsively ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm melinda:

I've heard some Bob James that I like here on FMU, but otherwise all I know is the Taxi theme. Which I love.
  11:25pm MrFab:

melinda, i'm sure you've heard him sampled in old-school hip-hop, e.g. Run-DMC's "Peter Piper."
Avatar 11:26pm Little Danny:

45s keeping me on my toes
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:26pm JtotheK:

gotta head out, enjoyed the show Danny, will catch the rest via the archives. thanks! good night everyone!
Avatar 11:27pm Little Danny:

Thanks and g'night J2tK!
  11:29pm melinda:

Night everyone
Avatar 11:29pm northguineahills:

Night Melinda!
Avatar 11:31pm Little Danny:

G'night Melinda! Thanks so much for stopping by!

Avatar 11:41pm Little Danny:

'night NGH, always a party!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:42pm ifny:

Whoa someone's put the whole Ramana album up for post-show listening www.youtube.com...
Avatar 11:42pm Little Danny:

@Dano59 - oh yes. It is a special record that instantly creates magic whenever I play it at home
Avatar 11:44pm Little Danny:

@ifny: it's like an early manifestation of what would later be called "World" music, but it's genuinely good
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Santos L. Halper:

Love this Network! Don't know them...
  12:02am MrFab:

Thanks amucho Danny.
Avatar 12:03am Little Danny:

Hi Santos, thanks! I don't know them either, really - except for their one mysterious 45
Avatar 12:03am Little Danny:

Thanks for being here MrFab!
