Listener comments!

  9:05pm Andrew:

Good evening. A pleasant, familiar opening song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08pm herb.nyc:

Hi all. Dumb q- is my $1 used cd Beat The Retreat tribute to RThompson worth it? Big names on it.
Avatar 9:08pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

  9:10pm Listener Robert:

Huh...I thought Ms. Trudel was having a sub in tonight. Maybe it's only her photography that's playing hooky.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm Irene Trudel:

Hi All! Tis I as usual in the chair. Had a late afternoon dentist appointment, so no time to find a good photo today. Maybe as the show unfolds.
Avatar 9:15pm Linda Lee:

always love hearing Pentangle. Cruel Sister is an amazing record. good evening Irene!
  9:17pm Listener Robert:

The tooth shall set you free.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Irene Trudel:

  9:20pm Listener Robert:

One frustrating thing about moving from the Bronx was that I'd just found a good & fast dentist who'd do the 2 root canals I needed for $850 each -- and would even fill one of them instead of an artificial crown -- but I had to move and needed the $ for moving. And now that I'm in NJ I have to find doctors & dentist all over again.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:21pm redkayak:

This is nice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm Tome:

Irene in the evening is a show that I look forward to now every week
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm herb.nyc:

If we're making puns- Sunday, Monday, Trudelday,...(kinda works)
  9:24pm John McG:

Wonderful stuff. The perfect evening of music on WFMU continues...
  9:25pm Listener Robert:

Another huh: That's supposed to be an actual nature photo from Crater Lake? It looks like a painting -- and the vegetation in the foreground looks especially like artwork, depicting various fanciful figures near its top.
  9:26pm Carmichael:

@herb: that's a great tribute cd. Bob Mould and Graham Parker are especially good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Dave in Vermont:

Thanks, Irene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Irene Trudel:

Oh, too bad Robert! I just found this latest dentist through a friend. While I like him tremendously-- very gentle and reassuring-- the out of pocket expense is not what I need right now.

But let's not talk about teeth. Hope this picture works, even though it does look like a painting. Somewhat enhanced, I suppose, but pretty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Tome:

finally got the music just right yes Irene in the evening !
  9:40pm herb.nyc:

Wha? We give wfmu money and all we get are apologies? Let's kill Ken (re Nachum Segal's remark)!!! ---thx Carmichael
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Tome:

There is noting like Irene in the evening

  9:43pm dinatekno:

I LOVE having you on in the evening. Much better than while I'm at work. I can now really listen and thoroughly enjoy your music choices.
  9:44pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

Hi Irene, hello one and all
  9:47pm Sean in Bristol, UK:

What a perfect track for this time of day,
Avatar 9:48pm tuner fish:

this is such a great setting for winding down
  9:49pm Listener Robert:

Herb, didn't you see Nachum was killing ALL the DJs, because of a typo in the Talmud?
  9:50pm Mark M:

Irene, thanks for hosting Heroes of Toolik a couple months ago. Went to the Tierney's show Saturday and it was pretty great.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:50pm redkayak:

Hey, a tree song :)
Avatar 9:51pm Linda Lee:

love what i hear of Bridget St. john. also can't help thinking 'healthier Nico' :-)
  9:53pm Carmichael:

Ken has a tattoo and cannot get to jewish heaven. A really horrendous tattoo, at that.
Avatar 9:54pm tuner fish:

yeah, i thought it was nico at first, Linda.
Avatar 9:55pm Linda Lee:

amazingly similar vocal tone, no?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03pm Irene Trudel:

Good to hear, Mark! We may have a show in Monty Hall with them next spring. Linda, I'd always thought that about Bridget. She certainly has a better vocal range than Nico.
  10:03pm Carmichael:

Here's what a critic said of Ackles: "Alternately calling to mind Hoagy Carmichael, Irving Berlin, Robbie Robertson, Tim Hardin, and Scott Walker." I tend to agree.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm melinda:

hi Irene & folks!
@Linda: yes! I listened to Bridget St. J for a while before I figured out why her voice sounded familiar.
Avatar 10:05pm Scraps deSelby:

hi h'lo h'lo.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Extraordinary stuff Madam T!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09pm Peter K.:

Gee, I was really hoping you were going to follow that David Ackles opus with "Montana" by Frank Zappa. Luckily for your listeners, you have much better taste than that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11pm coelacanth:

hello Irene and Irenians
- Excellent radiohead song. (though that's redundant, i know)
  10:12pm herb.nyc:

I wonder why Irene never plays any White Muslim Ska. I learned of that genre in The Mindy Project, which I'm about to watch now. Excuse me...(Listner Robart, thear arr know typos in the Talmood)
  10:13pm Carmichael:

@peter, ha ha .. I was thinking the same thing. It wouldn't a worked ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm coelacanth:

i crave hearing the "ask me no questions" album nearly every day lately. and yes, a little like Nico, but about 89X better.
  10:22pm Carmichael:

Terry Dolan info: http://www.highmoonrecords.com/shop/terry-dolan
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

BSJ = Nico~Shirley Collins~Nick Drake's guitar...(Wow)...
  10:23pm Andrew:

Funny. I was aware of Terry and the Pirates (band, not the comic strip) from following John Cipollina of Quicksilver Messenger Service, but never would have guessed it had something to do with this Terry Dolan song.
  10:27pm don:

Ackles released 4 albums, 3 on Elektra, 1 on Columbia. Stacy Sullivan, a well-regarded cabaret performer, has a show devoted to Ackles centered on his 1970 Troubador appearance with Elton John on the bill. Taupin revered Ackles and produced 'American Gothic', on which Ackles's epic 'Montana' appears.
Avatar 10:29pm Scraps:

Do you mean that you don't like Nico, coelacanth? Because I usually don't bring up that I despise Nico, but if I have a companion, that would be nice ... if I'm wrong, um, never mind
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm coelacanth:

2015 was at least nearly as bad.
...i know this year has sucked royally for me, aside from the loss of so many famous people that meant something to me; but at least i haven't lost any friends or family to a fire.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:29pm Irene Trudel:

Carmichael, don and Andrew, I've always loved David Ackles style of singing/playing. He's slightly out of tune but in a good way. And i love those orchestrations. don, I will definitely have to check out that Stacy Sullivan show Hi melinda, Scraps, Rev. Rabbit-- and anyone I haven't mentioned yet. Finally getting back on track.
  10:34pm don:

You have to check Stacy's schedule: she has done the Ackles show 3 times so far @ the Metropolitan Room on 22nd St. His 'Down River' and 'Road to Cairo' are classics.
  10:35pm Tommy Jack Haynes:

They need to pick up the tempo a bit
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm coelacanth:

Scraps, haha! i like some Nico; but i have 4 of her albums and really never want to listen to a whole one through.
- and "the end" album is pretty awful, all in all.
...so, despise? no!
- and i know it's fashionable to like Niko at wfmu! if i was concerned about what others thought i wouldn't admit to Loving radiohead!
Avatar 10:39pm Howard F:

perfect music for a rainy tuesday night, thanks!
Avatar 10:42pm Scraps:

Oh. I just think Nico can't sing -- like, she hits the wrong notes. Makes me cringe, even apart from her disconnect from the music (to me).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Well, the rain hasn't turned to snow tonight in these parts. Not yet, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45pm coelacanth:

oh yeah, exactly. when i do want to hear Nico it's not because i like her singing.
- but a lot of her music is fascinating and her lyrics often pretty amazing.
Avatar 🥁 10:52pm KP:

thank you coelcanth
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52pm coelacanth:

Ken did you have a white covering this morning on your side of the river? we did until around 11 am.
  10:52pm don:

holy smokes- this Dolunay track is great- they play Barbes which holds like 25 people
Avatar 🥁 10:53pm KP:

Good late evening to you, Irene
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54pm coelacanth:

KP - ?
Avatar 10:58pm Howard F:

I just found this John McLaughlin CD at a thrift store on Saturday!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm Irene Trudel:

I know don! Dolunay is one of the ensembles playing this Saturday night at our Barbes TSP remote. Hi KP!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59pm melinda:

Regarding Nico, I love the Chelsea Girl album but haven't felt the need to check out any others.
  11:02pm John McG:

I haven't heard this One Truth Band record in years. I have the lp but I haven't thought about it. I just pulled it out to remember who the singer is (Fernando Sanders). I got it from a cutout bin for $1.99 in '81 or '82. The Shankar violin sound is great.
  11:06pm east hollywood:

1960s West Coast painter John McLaughlin is amazing when you see it in person. Like Rothko, you can't really reproduce it in a photo.

I've always wanted to listen to John McLaughlin while looking at McLaughlin
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10pm Irene Trudel:

melinda, Nico's "The Marble Index" is also worth checking out. I like it a lot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:15pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@coel - No, nothing this morning.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Always just responded to Nico. A distinctive stylist - probably tends towards polarizing opinions.
Avatar 🥁 11:22pm KP:

Nice Nico!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm coelacanth:

haha! i was in the next room but i thought i heard Nico.
Irene, that's exactly what i would've done in response to the comment board Nico talk!
...and the marble index is my favorite; and to be fair - i do listen to the whole thing through occasionally, as well as chelsie girls....it's just been a few years.
Avatar 🥁 11:32pm KP:

Bring in Tammy Faye, in character of course
Avatar 🥁 11:35pm KP:

This Benoît Pioulard is impressive!
Avatar 11:56pm Scraps:

I usually like artists who polarize. To me, she she's a singer who can't sing. I can't get around that. And when I dig deeper, her personality is ugly (racist). I know that sometimes great artists can be shits as human beings, but my first exposure to her was negative (VU with nico), and then I read about her afterward.

Anyway. I'm not going to screed anymore. But I wasn't reacting to her because she was polarizing, I think.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Irene Trudel:

Good night all! I promise to be a little more talkative next time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm coelacanth:

Thanks Irene.
- and thanks to you who narrow-mindedly & incorrectly thinks i backpeddled, lied or contradicted myself.
(except chelsi girls is incorrect, as i meant desertshore.)
Avatar 11:58pm Scraps:

G'night Irene!

(That was not a joke!)
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 9:28am Brian in UK:

Irene, thanks for the David Ackles, one to hear him, two to play a track the length of Montana Song. Been listening to him since '68, does not fade.
Might have mentioned this before, I proposed to my wife after playing 'House Above the Strand' from Five & Dime on Colombia. Still together.
I like a crack in a singers' voice eg Phil Ochs, it is what they have to say that counts.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 4:21pm Sean in Bristol UK:

Great show, thank you, Irene
