Hey, all. Let's not get ahead of ourselves. The Fig Mints is already taken as a band name. thefigmints.bandcamp.com I hope they haven't registered a trademark for the snack yet.
  8:19pm Dan from Toronto:

Good evening from points North. Let's see if I can't get these greasy dishes scrubbed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:20pm Gaylord Fields:

@geezerette: Ha!
Avatar 8:20pm geezerette:

Gaylord, this music is like a fireplace lighting up a chilly room. Got any brandy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dan from Toronto: You could always go to Ajax. (That's a GTA joke!)
  8:21pm cheri:

please don't mention food to me, I can't eat another bite. Gaylord sorry I missed posting last week.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Gaylord Fields:

@geezerette: Brandy and sativa? You know how to (legally) party!

Ken FHP, seriously? You gotta be a copyright lawyer these days.

I do Gaylord! I minored in it! :)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm common:

hi gaylord and people!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:25pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dan from Toronto: I was once the hit of a Canada Day party held in Brooklyn because of my knowledge of Canadiana for no good reason.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm Gaylord Fields:

@common: Hello to you.
Avatar 8:26pm Scraps:

i used to work at the Container Store in Manhattan. They had a strict anti-reefer policy (random testing). i wonder now back in Seattle if they have anti-reefer policy in Seattle (Bellevue?) store.... PROBably.

I could go for a croque madame right now, or a croque monsieur

  8:35pm Mr C:

I'm cooking in the kitchen while you simmer on the radio! You're welcome, stop on by...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:35pm melinda:

@Scraps: the Container Store drug tested people? yikes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Gaylord Fields:

@Mr C: You can feed the multitudes! I've heard you do it!
Avatar 8:40pm Scraps:

the container store is conservative. i think TCS started in Texas. Somewhere south, anyway.
  8:40pm Dan from Toronto:

How did I not know about this excellent show before? Lovely tunage, Mr. Fields
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:40pm coelacanth:

greetings Gaylord nd all
Avatar 8:42pm Scraps:

and very very anti-union. it's a firing offense to talk about unions. really.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:44pm Gaylord Fields:

Welcome @coelacanth.
Avatar 8:44pm Scraps:

otherwise, it's a very good place to work, at least fifteen years ago. except manhattan. that one is toxic, because they hadn't figured out how to make a profit in manhattan
  8:44pm Mr C:

OOH you hit the sweet spot!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:45pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dan from Toronto: Thanks! I'm happy that you discovered this show and are enjoying it enough to let me know.
Avatar 8:45pm geezerette:

melinda,me too. It was a quiet one this year, just the two of us.
Avatar 8:46pm geezerette:

love Gene Pitney.
  8:46pm IFisher:

beauty and truth stocked here. Or truth and beauty, can't recall the proper order
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:46pm Philthy woman:

I am enjoying this schmalz Gaylord, thank you, it is coating my soul
  8:47pm Carmichael:

Heya Gaylord and fig mint lovers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm Gaylord Fields:

@geezerette: No, no — I love Gene Pitney! (Wait: This isn't a zero-sum game, is it?)
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Uncle Michael:

This not a town without Pitney.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm Philthy woman:

and this too... never heard. thank you
  8:49pm JakeGould:

@Scraps: Pretty much the same story with any chain business moving into modern NYC. The chain is stable elsewhere, but in NYC the bullshit makes the place toxic. Look up recent stories on “Trader Joe’s” in NYC and employee treatment. Sad but true.
Avatar 8:50pm geezerette:

Gaylord,nope! It's two,two, two mints in one!
Avatar 8:50pm Alejandroool:

Great sounding show right now GF, not usually on at this timeslot or is this new?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Gaylord Fields:

@IFisher: This order is disorder.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:51pm Gaylord Fields:

Hi @Carmichael.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm Gaylord Fields:

@Uncle Michael: I especially like Gene Pitney's song "The Man Who Shot Ritchie Valens."
  8:53pm Dean:

Nice tip of the hat to Wallace Stevens.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm Gaylord Fields:

@Alejandroool: I'm new to this time slot but have been on WFMU for 24 years, mostly Sundays 5-7 pm ET for the past 15 or so years.
Avatar 8:54pm geezerette:

hiya coel!

Carmichael,hee hee

UM, it isn't very pretty what a town without Pitney would do.
(Probably mistreat workers...)
  8:54pm sugarwolf:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm Gaylord Fields:

@sugarwolf: Polnareff!!!
Avatar 8:55pm geezerette:

(GF, hahaha!)
Avatar 8:55pm Scraps:

Jake, I'll bet. I could write a book about that; but it would be really boring.
Avatar 8:55pm Alejandroool:

This will be regular timeslot? Never able to tune in on Sundays, though I believe I may have once or twice. Hello fellow Sunday evening peoples.
  8:56pm ?:

Chemystery a more
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:56pm Uncle Michael:

Gaylord, was that record on Liberty?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:57pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dean: What can I say? I have a fondness for insurance executives.
  8:58pm JakeGould:

@Scraps: It’s not a hard story to understand… NYC real estate for retail and living are insane. A chain comes to NYC and their business model fails because they have no idea how the system works here. Margins are razor thin. More and more pressure is put on employees. And so on and so on.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:58pm Uncle Michael:

Quiz question: Who played the title role in "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance?"
  8:59pm Dean:

Trick question?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 8:59pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm melinda:

I remember the Container Store in Austin in the 80s, thought it was the only one at the time so maybe it started there.
  9:01pm ?:

gene pitney took a shot
Avatar 9:01pm Scraps:

Yep. Also, where people are paid well in almost any place else, in New York not only they are not paid well (at the same wages), but they have to work two jobs. etc
  9:02pm Dean:

Sorta like "Who played the title role in the classic 1931 'Frankenstein'?"
Avatar 9:02pm Scraps:

Melinda, I think you're right.
  9:02pm Mr C:

Love gets Womacked!
Avatar 9:03pm geezerette:

There you go again ! Bobby Womack/Bacharach/David. Slaying me!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:04pm Uncle Michael:

Even trickier than that one, Dean.
Avatar 9:04pm Alejandroool:

agreed, geezerette
  9:04pm Dean:

Now, if you'd said "eponymous"...
Avatar 9:05pm geezerette:

Lee Marvin.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Uncle Michael:

One actor played "the man who shot Liberty Valance" and someone else played the man who shot Liberty Valance.
Avatar 9:05pm Scraps:

And in the Container Store, all of the stores have the same pricing. You can see how, in Manhattan, you're going to have problems right away
  9:06pm Dean:

Yow. Way trickier, like 11D chess tricky! Never mind the schmoe who played Liberty Valance. Or the cinematographer who, arguably, "shot Liberty Valance."
Avatar 9:07pm geezerette:

Jimmy Stewart thought he did it, John Wayne did it, Lee Marvin was Liberty Valance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:07pm coelacanth:

(Gene Pitney)
  9:07pm cheri:

I had to come back only to say you're a beautiful person, Gaylord
Avatar 9:09pm geezerette:

Dean, you're right! It was the camera man.
. Brilliant, buddy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09pm coelacanth:

hello Jandro! i'm not often around this time of sundays either.
  9:10pm Dean:

Brilliant, perhaps, but I can't win at Candyland with my 5YO.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Uncle Michael:

Try chutes and ladders.
  9:11pm Dean:

I keep trying to climb up the chutes.
Avatar 9:11pm Alejandroool:

heya coela! This is a great timeslot for me, so I'm happy to be able to catch this show. Lose a show, gain a show, as it seems to go with the schedule shifting (which is a great idea overall) Also I lost my little radio, I hope my payments are going through! hah
Avatar 9:11pm geezerette:

Well that's not a fair contest! Her synapses are all shiny and new.
Avatar 9:12pm Alejandroool:

(to whom it may concern over at 'fmu) will have to check
Avatar 9:13pm Alejandroool:

Cinematographer who shot: William H. Clothier
Avatar 9:14pm Scraps:

somehow i associate Liberty Valance with Joaquin Murrieta and Three Finger Jack. I think maybe it was children's records.... or, uh, not
Avatar 9:15pm geezerette:

Thanks Alejandroool!
  9:16pm Dean:

I always associate Liberty Valance with a Philadelphia window treatment outfit.
Avatar 9:17pm geezerette:

(Oliver Nelson :)
  9:17pm Carmichael:

Same here, Alejandrool. I'm still paying, but no radio.
  9:17pm ?:

Do you remember love?
  9:17pm Dean:

And the title of this Oliver Nelson tune makes me think of Home Town Buffet.
Avatar 9:18pm Scraps:

Ooooh, Oliver Nelson.... cool, man
Avatar 9:18pm geezerette:

Same here Dean. And not a Ford fan either.
Avatar 9:18pm Alejandroool:

@Carmichael, I know the radios go away when any new funding drive starts. The hearts went away once too, but never came back.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:19pm Uncle Michael:

Not a John Ford fan, geezerette?
Avatar 9:20pm geezerette:

If your hometown had a buffet like that you'd move.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm coelacanth:

actually the correct answer to who played the man who shot liberty valance is: David (inner ear detour); Joe McGasco; Frank O'Toole; Bill Kelly; Devon Lewis; & Dave Mandl.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Uncle Michael:

Is it vocalese if I don't understand French?
  9:21pm ?:

That'll be the day.
Avatar 9:22pm geezerette:

Oh dear, no UM, not. Sorry...perhaps I'm too immature, emotionally. Or insufficiently Irish?
  9:22pm Carmichael:

Love these French singers! The French Rat Race is my favorite.
  9:23pm Dean:

I vaguely remember Sir George's Smorgasbord in the LA area, but I don't think my family ever actually went there.

Earlier this evening I read a transcript of a conversation between William Parker and Rob Brown. Brown grew up in Virginia, where he recalls seeing precisely two acts that impressed him at the time: Woody Herman's band and Dizzy.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Uncle Michael:

Without Ford, I'm not sure there'd be such a thing as a western that's a great film.
Avatar 9:23pm geezerette:

coel,hahaha :)
Avatar 9:26pm geezerette:

I admit to loving "The Searchers" and the one with a very young Montgomery Cliff, "Red River Valley"?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Ken From Hyde Park:

There's a rumor that listener Lyle used to chum around with Liberty Valence, Lee Marvin and John Carradine. The tour bus had a flat tire or something.
  9:27pm Dean:

What? "Blazing Saddles" not great?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm melinda:

John Ford is one of the few celebrities born/raised in Portland ME. He was John Feeney back then, there's a pub named for him plus a statue.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm melinda:

@Ken: I'd like to hear that Lyle story.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Uncle Michael:

"Red River"

Yes, John Wayne's two best roles...as he played assholes and not heroes.

"The Searchers" is indeed, great cinema.

Dean, Ford didn't make all te westerns that are great films. He was the guy that showed the genre could contain great films...in my view.
Avatar 9:28pm geezerette:

But my favorite Western is "Once Upon A Time In The West" by Leone,(which you know).
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:29pm Uncle Michael:

I only have eyes for the Flaming O's.
  9:29pm Carmichael:

Lyle used to hang with Aaron Burr, back before it was cool.
Avatar 9:29pm geezerette:

  9:30pm Dean:

Yeah, but Mel Brooks or Richard Pryor came up with the toll booth in the middle of the desert and the "shitload of dimes" bit.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Uncle Michael:

OUATITW is in part great becaue Henry Fonda plays an asshole, not a hero.
  9:31pm ?:

Nothing is too wonderful to be true
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm coelacanth:

Ken, i'm sure Lyle wouldn't waste an opportunity to (retroactively) hang with those three.
Avatar 9:32pm geezerette:

Doesn't this sound like "I Only Have Eyes For You"? previous
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dean: And Pryor wrote the line "Mongo only pawn in game of life."
Avatar 9:33pm Scraps:

really? that's awesome
Avatar 9:33pm geezerette:

"Blazing Saddles" is my second favorite!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33pm Gaylord Fields:

@geezerette: It's a soundalike followup.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:34pm Uncle Michael:

Most importantly, Blazing Saddles led to my generation wondering who Heddy Lamarr was.
  9:35pm Dean:

That's Hedley.
Avatar 9:36pm geezerette:

UM, yes, great casting. One of Fonda's best roles. And the way the music is a commentary.
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Uncle Michael:

I knew who Hedley was. Who Heddy was, was more rewarding to discover.
  9:37pm cheri:

Gaylord, I hope i'm not overdoing this but you always outdo yourself!
Avatar 9:38pm Scraps:

maybe i'm admitting to awful taste in westerns, and i know it's not Ford and Leone or anything, but i like Silverado. except the Rosanna Arquette subplot, that is awful.
  9:38pm ?:

Spag Heddy - Whuck!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:39pm Uncle Michael:

I admit that even Kevin Costner is kind of fun in Silverado.
Avatar 9:39pm Scraps:

aw, Forget That Girl! "aaaa-aaahhhh"
Avatar 9:39pm geezerette:

Love Madeline Kahn in that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm melinda:

I don't know many westerns, but I heard Silverado was good.
Avatar 9:40pm Scraps:

costner was young, and not caught up with Serious Costner
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40pm melinda:

I liked A Fistful of Dollars, but movies like that really lose something when viewed on a small TV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@cheri: Of course you're overdoing it, but I don't really mind as much as others do. :)
Avatar 9:42pm Marc Francis:

Howdy Gaylord!
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Uncle Michael:

Most of us saw those movies on tv, squeezed to 4:3 and cut for commercials...over and over...before we had anything like TCM. They get into the blood, even ruined like that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:42pm Gaylord Fields:

@Scraps: Davy's best vocal by far on a song worthy of it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Gaylord Fields:

@Marc Francis: Welcome to the playlist. ;)
Avatar 9:43pm Scraps:

  9:44pm Dan from Toronto:

Well the grease didn't come off all the pans, but the music was good ;)
Avatar 9:44pm geezerette:

UM, forgot "McCabe and Mrs. Miller", which came up last week because of Leonard Cohen.
Avatar 9:44pm Marc Francis:

Hahahahaa. Yes. Glad to be here!
  9:45pm Dan from Toronto:

(Still is; this stuff sounds like Blue Rodeo, speaking of Canadiana)
  9:45pm ?:

'Unforgiven' is about how to not be less than better?
Avatar 9:47pm Alejandroool:

I recently saw a bit of "High Plains Drifter" from 1973, which Eastwood directed post-Leone ones, and the bit I saw was kind of atrocious compared to The Good, The Bad & The Ugly and such
Avatar 9:47pm Alejandroool:

Hey Dan from TO, glad to see a fellow city listener
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:47pm Uncle Michael:

I have the 2005 "Special Edition" edit of Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid sitting here on DVD for viewing, when I can find the time. It also has the 1988 "Turner Preview" edit on it.
  9:47pm cheri:

ok Gaylord , i'll quit I don't want to ruin a good thing
Avatar 9:48pm Alejandroool:

geeerette, I've always enjoyed that Altman one. Great atmosphere
Avatar 9:48pm geezerette:

"The Unforgiven" is a really good film. Eastwood is a great director. Violent but great.
  9:48pm Dean:

"High Plains Drifter" was originally conceived as the culmination of a much longer movie, "The Good, the Bad, the Ugly & the Atrocious."
Avatar 9:49pm Alejandroool:

  9:50pm Carmichael:

Keep being you, Cheri!
Avatar 9:51pm geezerette:

Alejandrool, absolutely!

Dean, sounds like someones transition team.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Gaylord Fields:

@Dan from Toronto: I gave it a try. I'll play more scour-friendly music next week. ;)
  9:54pm Dean:

That movie, geezerette, is "The Dismal, the Horrible & the Couldn't Have Gotten Any Worse."
Avatar 9:56pm geezerette:

Gaylord, so much fun! Thanks for the perfect post-holiday show!

Dean, sad and true.

You guys are great company. :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm Gaylord Fields:

Thanks, @geezerette!
  9:57pm Dean:

Nice hearing Emmy Lou at the end of that Gene Clark. Wasn't it?
Avatar 🎸 Swag For Life Member 9:58pm Uncle Michael:

Where does the time go?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58pm coelacanth:

Great program Gaylord Thanks!
Avatar 9:58pm Marc Francis:

Thanks Gaylord!
Avatar 9:59pm Alejandroool:

Excellent show, thanks Gaylord, cheers all
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59pm melinda:

@ geez: definitely Mcabe & Mrs. Miller.
