Live performance by Essence Goldman (vocals, guitar), with Ben (bass), and Roger Rocha (guitars, vocals)
A daughter of San Franciscan "flower children," Essence Goldman has been channeling her life experiences into song since the 1990s. Essence has opened for the likes of Tom Petty, Shawn Colvin, Chris Isaac, Sarah McLachlan, Natalie Merchant, Chrissie Hynde, to name a few, and has had music on major labels and TV shows, but national fame has been a bit elusive. Her latest, "Black Wings," channels her crumbling marriage into catchy, honest tunes. Essence Goldman, along with bassist Ben and guitarist Roger Rocha, dropped by to play a few of them on Irene's show.

Ach, Irene. I miss you in your morning slot.
Avatar 9:02pm Scraps deSelby:

Ahhhhhhhh........ Calvary Cross!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thuh man.
Avatar 9:06pm Scraps deSelby:

I can't remember if the live one on Watching the Dark is the one from Live (More or Less) or another live one. There's many live Calvary Crosses....
Avatar 🥁 9:08pm βrian:

Wha? Just how many is there?
  9:11pm TimBk:

Wouldn't mind seeing a Richard and Linda Thompson reunion tour.
Avatar 9:12pm Scraps:

Well, mostly bootlegs; but Thompson has released many live things in the last twenty+ years, and some of them have Calvary Cross in them. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thuh otha man.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13pm Irene Trudel:

Hi Brian, Scraps, Rev.Rabbit and Tim! I'm not sure I know which other versions you're thinking of, Scraps. But I know Richard's performed it many times. Tim, I don't think a reunion between the two will happen. Linda doesn't perform live anymore.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:14pm melinda:

hi folks
Avatar 9:14pm Scraps:

But Watching the Dark was a 3-disc comp, and I don't remember if the live CC was a rerelease from Live More or Less (also Guitar, Vocal is the same one)
Avatar 9:16pm Scraps:

I should just know; i've listened to it enough time. :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Shirley Collins on 'All Songs Considered' :
- talks about (literally) losing & regaining her voice - along w/ Linda Thompson!
  9:21pm TimBk:

Hi Irene, I know it was 6 years ago and just a duet, but I pulled this from her wiki page:
Linda and Richard Thompson performed a duet at 12 June 2010 Meltdown Festival tribute concert to Kate McGarrigle, which Richard coordinated.

Not sure she has the voice these days at 69 to do even a mini tour? I absolutely love her voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Good evening, galaxy dwellers.
Avatar 🥁 9:32pm βrian:

I can't figure which side of the Mediterranean this music is on.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Planned to watch the US/Costa Rica soccer game, but I don't get the channel with my cable package. Couple minutes web search and I'm streaming it on my phone with the go90 app. What a country! If mom calls, it ends, but can't leave mom hanging.
Avatar 9:45pm Scraps:

wow, the original!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:46pm mariano:

Hey everyone! This show was a comfort last week, like a really nice little dimly lit bar in a bad storm, still a comfort a week later.
Avatar 🥁 9:48pm βrian:

Sometimes it seems like everybody and everything died this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm mariano:

You said it, Brian. It's like the bad parts of 1968.
Avatar 🥁 9:51pm βrian:

Well, I'm married to one of the very good parts of 1968 so ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Yay set.
Avatar 9:51pm Scraps:

Avatar 9:51pm Scraps:

Oh man....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52pm mariano:

Mose Allison?!? Fuck this year. Brian: I just squeaked by, born Jan '69. But '68 was also the year of the White Album, so lots of good things too!
Avatar 9:52pm Scraps:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

'68 was Year of the Earth Monkey, this is a Fire Monkey...as was 1776.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57pm mariano:

You finally did it, you maniacs!
  9:58pm Ham Eater:

Wow reminds me of my old synths Good old Roland Yamaha and Korgs
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm mariano:

Hi Irene, hello one and all
  10:53pm ledzeppelinsucks:

greetings from 94706 I am used to hearing Irene in the afternoon or late morning PDT
  10:59pm herb.nyc:

Hi. I posted this at 2:36pm and I shareth with youeth---re Leonard Cohen, I'm gonna garble some quote about his singing- "other people can't sing Leonard Cohen songs as badly as he can't sing them".
  11:01pm ledzeppelinsucks:

has Yoko Ono covered any of his songs?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:02pm mariano:

Avatar 11:09pm Van in DC:

And Leon Russell, boggle
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:09pm Irene Trudel:

Hey All! Finally coming up for air after our live set.
Avatar 11:10pm Van in DC:

Just got in from a live concert in DC, Samantha Fish. AWESOME blues guitarist / singer, with Go Go Ray on drums and a fantastic basist named Chris. Second time I've seen them. Wish FMU would discover them some day.
  11:24pm KP:

Van, I've seen her on television. Very impressive.
Avatar 11:30pm Van in DC:

To me, Samantha Fish is to the Blues what Pat Benatar was to early rock & roll, tiny dynamite with incredible passion. But much more talented than Pat.
  11:30pm herb.nyc:

David Mancuso died too. I had to google- dj and club guy for the gay set.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30pm coelacanth:

shit i just missed a Leonard Cohen set
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm coelacanth:

...but made it for a Mose set. (& i know all but one of those LC songs anyway)
...hi Irene and others
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm mariano:

This is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm mariano:

Wasaaap coelacanth!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44pm Tome:

Avatar 11:44pm Van in DC:

this kind of crappy video I shot in August shows Samantha Fish, Go Go Ray, & the bassist Chris doing most of "I Put a Spell on You". I shot a much better one tonight that I will upload tomorrow.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45pm coelacanth:

haha! hey mariano!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52pm melinda:

I like Amy's voice.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm Irene Trudel:

Amy's voice is so unusual but sweet and lovely. I've been a fan from the first time i heard her perform with The Maudlins.
