Reading the Good Grey's obit of Leonard. There was a good, long piece about him in the New Yorker just a few weeks ago, which, by telling coincidence, I read on the train to and from my most recent FMU volunteer turn.

New Yorkers, or those who grew up hereabouts -- anybody remember a show (a kids' show, I think) that used an instrumental of "Ain't Down" as its theme?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:45pm listener james from westwood:

I'd hadn't been conscious of hearing her (although I imagine I did, on WFMU, without knowing it) until I heard her in "L.A. Confidential" in '97 singing the ever-living hell out of "Wheel of Fortune."
  12:45pm Ramblin' Ray:

Thanks for these delicious tunes.
Avatar 12:46pm still b/p:

Love the open of Wheel of Fortune with the sound effect and horns.
Avatar 12:47pm Parq:

Wonderama, right! Thanks, guys. I was thinking Chuck McCann's show.
Avatar 12:48pm Monica:

yer welcome, ramblin' ray!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:50pm Little Danny:

@Monica: have you ever seen the scopitone of Joi Lansing's version of "Web Of Love"? It is the cat's pajamas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:51pm Rich in Washington:

ah, the weekend must be here early! My ISP is taking a dump.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:53pm melinda:

There was a British movie that featured Wheel of Fortune and first introduced me to the song, but I can't remember what it was.
Avatar 12:53pm CB1:

Damn, Mo you sure can pick 'em. How the air waves miss you.
Avatar 12:55pm Monica:

will chk it, danny!... thx, cb1!...
Avatar 12:58pm still b/p:

Brit flick "Let Him Have It" soundtrack included Wheel of Fortune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:59pm Brian in UK:

Was that about Derek Bentley. Elvis Costello wrote a song about it much later.
Avatar 1:00pm still b/p:

Yeah, that's it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:02pm melinda:

@still b/p: maybe that was it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:03pm Little Danny:

I had to buy this version of "...Sedated" when I heard it on Monica's show, love it, chopsticks and all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:07pm Webhamster Henry:

Yes, I want to be sedated, exactly this way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm melinda:

It's the best weird cover.
Avatar 1:08pm Parq:

Nutley! Now I *know* it's a Monica show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:08pm Alex In Illinois:

This is hilarious! I will need to favorite it when my screen finishes refreshing.
Avatar 1:08pm still b/p:

Avatar 1:09pm Parq:

I had the pleasure of introducing their "Chicken Impossible" to my kid's fella last weekend.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:09pm Alex In Illinois:

Hmm. sedated not showing up on the playlist yet.
Avatar 1:10pm Parq:

On it, chief.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:11pm Webhamster Henry:

@Alex In IL, it's by the Nutley Brass, often Monica's bed music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Alex In Illinois:

Oh okay. I just wanted to click a star for it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Rich in Washington:

That's awesome advice. My space needs a good mucking out. So much real and psychic clutter. It's definitely contributing to the dis-ease.

Wasn't this in Saturday Night Fever?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

always nice to hear any part of the "saturday night fever" soundtrack!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm Doug Schulkind:

When my hard drive crashed, I lost about 3000 LPs worth of MP3s. Was able to claw back about 80% of the lot, including that wonderful Nicos Jaritz record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:18pm listener james from westwood:

Hah, melinda, we're on the same page! Loved this from when I was a wee lad and my mom let me play the double-set of LPs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Little Danny:

Mo's musical segues are the best. Lovin' this so much today
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm melinda:

I lost my Saturday Night Fever soundtrack when I last moved. Not hard to replace, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:21pm joe:

@melinda if you are in the NJ area there is a copy for sale in the box down in Monty Hall :)
Avatar 1:23pm Monica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm melinda:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:34pm Ken From Hyde Park:

My last visit to Maine was over twenty years ago. Hiked Mt. Katahdin on a warm summer's day.
Avatar 1:36pm still b/p:

Katahdin one of my favorite places. Last there when a friend was married nearly in its shadow in the park...and I took another hike up.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm melinda:

I don't get to leave Portland much, unfortunately, but the foliage looks great from where I sit in my dining room.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:38pm Alex In Illinois:

I saw Doug mention a drive crash. I have been without my home computer for a week, and today it is ready to pick up for the shop. They asked me if my 2nd hard drive had anything valuable on it, and I was like: "That's where I keep my mp3s, and all of my audio visual things." I had to wait an extra 2 days for them to get it working with the second hard drive.
Avatar 1:41pm Parq:

Everybody sing!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm Little Danny:

Love Faith Evans. That bass/drum vamp is lifted from some Lou Donaldson jernt that I can't quite put my finger on.
Avatar 1:41pm still b/p:

Leaves blowin' 'round like hell today, each yard transferring its collection over to two or three nearby properties.
Avatar 1:42pm chromaphone:

Digging your show Monica, thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:42pm melinda:

@still b/p: same here, I was going to rake today but maybe not.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm doctorjazz:

I really should back my hard drive up...I'm a lazy bum.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:44pm doctorjazz:

Do folks just copy to an external drive? Use the Cloud? Pray (that's been my strategy)?
Avatar 1:44pm Parq:

I gotta get off the puter, but I'll keep listening (on my phone). Thanks for being here (I almost typed "being her", which also fits), bright angel, and regards to all fellow devotees. Courage.
Avatar 1:48pm Monica:

thx for chking in chromaphone !
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:48pm Alex In Illinois:

I do have an old external drive for backup that I have not used lately. I am wondering if backing things up to flash drives would be away to go.

Avatar 1:54pm Monica:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:00pm doctorjazz:

Sons of the Pioneers have quite a jazz feel, love the give and take across these genres of the time.
  2:02pm Ramblin' Ray:

USB sticks easily mislaid.
I'd recommend weekly backup up to 2 destinations e.g. 2 external hard drives or external hard drive plus cloud.
Reason being that any hard drive can fail anytime.
Same story with any particular backup method e.g. as in Doug's case discovering that cloud backup hadn't actually been backing up stuff for some time due to some weird error resulting in loss of treasured sounds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:13pm listener james from westwood:

Visited Portland for the first time as a vacation/conference trip this March/April. Lovely time. My one regret was that I didn't have the chance to visit that lovable scamp Tony Coulter.

I used to take roadtrips up to Portland to play Geno's. Met some great folks up there who let us crash on in their living room so we didn't have to sleep in the van.
Avatar 2:36pm Monica:

Avatar 2:39pm still b/p:

Geno's, (Portland, ME) still keepin' on. I'm in there from time to time for special events, Fringe shows, etc., as opposed to the music shows, which are outside my musical zone and where levels are beyond of the physical risk/manageability zone for my ears.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Mike East:

good to hear @still b/p. They treated us well there.
