That carmine red. Red's not my favorite color this week, sadly.

The Failure of Color
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:05pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Well, there you have it: A basketful of deplorable failure.
  3:05pm Agent Peter:

Ah, hot buttered popcorn...a basket full!
Avatar 3:07pm Polyus:

Make America Fail Again. And again. And again. . .
Avatar 3:08pm V Priceless:

Smash it up, Fabio!
  3:12pm khd:

loving the beep boops

make America GRATE again with President Pussy Grabber.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:14pm Cliff in Prague:

Waaah-waaah, wocka wocka wocka
Avatar 3:17pm Chris from DC:

I am your failure.
  3:27pm khd:

hey fabio - i got yr premium about a month ago and fell in love with the J. Reinhardt and J. Chantler tracks (so much so that I bought both albums). thanks for the heads up (as always)...
  3:27pm Agent Peter:

What we have here is a failure to communicate
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:32pm Ike:

...with the white working class in the Rust Belt, you mean? Yep.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41pm Cliff in Prague:

This is payback for Bill Clinton signing NAFTA.
  3:44pm rakes:

Is this still alog?
  3:44pm Dean:

That Eno tune is one of the very few of his I enjoy.
Avatar 3:45pm βrian:

It's nothing so coherent as payback. Just a tsunami-scale spasm of misdirected impotent rage.
  3:46pm Dean:

Kinda like tossing tea into Boston Harbor.
Avatar 3:47pm βrian:

After which someone asked, "What do we drink now?"
Avatar 3:48pm Sig:

whatever 2
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:52pm Ike:

Yeah, but it's not really that simple. First, Bush Sr. signed the original NAFTA. Bill revised it to add better worker rights and environmental protections and re-signed it. Everybody forgets that. Anyway it's way too late to go back to protectionism now. The trade war will destroy our economy. The nihilistic side of me hopes Drumpf does it so that conservatism is crippled for generations to come, a la the FDR era, though in this new era of propaganda, the rich and powerful will probably just successfully reassign blame to Democrats somehow.
Avatar 3:55pm Chris from DC:

Just the set I needed right now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:59pm Davis:

Ike is right i think. double think. in the uk the propaganda machine has sucessfully convinced everybody that there is no money because the poor people have taken it all. this is quite a feat i think
Avatar 4:00pm Sig:

A slice of a fucking pictue
Avatar 4:00pm βrian:

And in the U.S. there aren't enough entry-level jobs because the rich don't have enough money.
  4:01pm Dean:

Bill signed the Implementation Act, which he cannot have revised.
  4:02pm JakeGould:

FWIW, you know how some people in NYC consider people in the outer boroughs to be "hicks?" Like folks on Staten Island? Don't expect people to care about the rust belt when they passively (and consistently) alienate their own neighbors for the stupidest of reasons.
  4:05pm nic:

this is great !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:07pm Carmichael:

Welcome to total and permanent failure, by all and for all.
Avatar 4:09pm geezerette:

Hi friends. Two ideas have been haunting me since before the actual election; that the Civil War never ended and we are reliving the aftermath of Reconstruction, and that we are, and have for some time been living in a Huxley-Orwell world.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10pm Ken From Hyde Park:

You're a puppet!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:11pm Carmichael:

My thoughts have been along a different line. Watching the inability of anyone or anything to slow Trump down, I became certain that the 3rd anti-Christ has now been revealed. Prepare for a fiery apocalypse within 4 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:13pm Davis:

we already live in the apocalypse. we have all grown up after nuclear bombs were dropped on people.
Avatar 4:13pm Cecile:

JakeGould: ITA
I didn't want to believe it, but I saw so many Trump signs in Upper Michigan this summer.
Avatar 4:13pm Cecile:

I just kind of kept my fingers crossed.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm Ike:

@geezerette, racism is an element, but don't overestimate that. There are two (or more) schools of thought on what happened. One is more like yours:
The other:
Avatar 4:14pm Polyus:

I thought Gimme Danger was indeed "pretty good"; not life-changing, but I certainly enjoyed it.
  4:17pm Dean:

Love that Intercept account. Will have to examine the Vox one.
Avatar 4:17pm Cecile:

Poly, I think I feel that way about most documentaries.
Although the Seven-Five, the one about the most corrupt police precinct (prior to recently) in NYC history was beautifully done and still shocking.
Avatar 4:17pm V Priceless:

was just watching part 1 of Bowie art auction on-line @ Sothebys. Pretty fascinating.
Avatar 4:19pm geezerette:

Everyone here is thoughtful, kind, generous. We are going to need humor and hope and political engagement or some sort of positive activism to get through this.
The Intercept is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:24pm Ken From Hyde Park:

@geezerette - I've seen some headlines about California secession. Are people talking about that there?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:25pm Davis:

socialism, people before profit, there is no hope otherwise
  4:25pm spaceman one:

Next time, run a better candidate.
Avatar 4:25pm Chris from DC:

That Crescent record is so bleak, but I always really liked it.
  4:27pm Dean:

The CA secession bullshit has been going on for some time. Drive north toward Oregon and you'll pass signs proclaiming the border of the country of "Jefferson." There are counties in the north with delusions of sovereignty.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:28pm Davis:

i love this crescent. never heard before
Avatar 4:28pm Cecile:

Dean, the U.P. keeps threatening to secede from time to time along with Northern Wisconsin.
  4:29pm Dean:

By "north" I mean north. I'm in the Bay Area, conventionally regarded as Northern California, even though we're just about smack dab at the center of the coastline. Hence, I suspect, the wounded feelings of those marginalized to the true north.
Avatar 4:29pm geezerette:

Ken fhp: No one I know. It's a ridiculous, horrible idea.
Avatar 4:30pm βrian:

Thanks for the article links, Ike.
Avatar 4:31pm geezerette:

Dean's right, they're delusional.
Avatar 4:32pm chocolate monk:

reynols sooothes!
Avatar 4:33pm V Priceless:

Bohack = ancient (defunct) NYC area supermarket chain
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:38pm Carmichael:

Ken, the northern border counties are trying to create a 51st state called Jefferson. I pass through it on my way to Portland. A bunch of angry farmers and white trash who feel marginalized, and their response is to create their own government. Local level failure.
  4:38pm Dean:

*state of "Jefferson"

I got a little carried away there.
  4:40pm Dean:

The stupid thing is that they can create their own government! Freedom of association and all that. It just can't be sovereign.
  4:49pm SeanG:

dark fucking times right now.
  4:53pm Myat's dad:

I new it was Reynols - was going to call it out!
Avatar 4:54pm Cecile:

You know, people want to secede because they don't feel like their concerns are being heard. Maybe more of their concerns need to be heard.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56pm Davis:

people have always needed their concerns to be heard because throughout all history people have worked their whole lives to keep the rich rich
  4:58pm pup:

isn't Clay on at 5 today? maybe I am misreading the schedule
Avatar 5:02pm TDK60:

This is TDK60 and I'm not amused.
Avatar 5:08pm Chris from DC:

This Unearth Noise has become quite the FMU hit.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:10pm Dave in Vermont:

@pup 6 EST
  5:11pm Dean:

They don't feel like their concerns are being heard because...their concerns are not being heard. I think there's more to it, too. They are rightly demoralized by this country's failure (if you'll pardon the expression) to even pretend to uphold the values we traditionally associate with America (alternatively, the values we associate with traditional America, the one at the founding).
  5:11pm Myat's dad:

*knew it was Reynols
  5:14pm Brendan:

  5:14pm nic:

great love this !!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:16pm Ike:

What values are those?
  5:16pm Dean:

Who came first? Jocelyn Robert or Adele?
  5:25pm Dean:

Rule of law. Justice. General welfare. The warm fuzzy stuff.
  5:31pm Dean:

My point being not that America once actually delivered the goods undamaged, but that there was at least a sense of aspiration. Or that once upon a time there was at least a pretense of such aspiration.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:36pm Carmichael:

I've tried real hard to get into Daevid Allen, but it doesn't seem to be working.
  5:36pm SeanG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:41pm melinda:

Pidge should be here soon.
  5:43pm SeanG:

i need me some pidge right now that's for damn sure
Avatar 5:44pm Honeybear:

@Dean - yes, I remember the "warm and fuzzy" times, or at least echoes of them, too. It wasn't like everything worked swimmingly well, by any stretch (and indeed there was much to dread and loathe in those years, of course). But you didn't have this sense that some character out of a David Lynch movie was about to grab the wheel of the bus you're on, and send it hurtling over a cliff, at any moment.
Avatar 5:45pm V Priceless:

cool show, Fab - thanks!
  5:45pm Marcel M:

Avatar 5:46pm Honeybear:

Which is apparently the day-to-day reality we'll all be living with for the next 4+ years.
  5:47pm SeanG:

feel like playing All Things Must Pass on repeat for the next 4 years
Avatar 5:48pm TDK60:

He'll "bring back water-boarding and worse."
Avatar 5:52pm Honeybear:

Clay is here... he's our only hope!
Avatar 5:52pm dale:

if trump brings in guiliani and christie it really will be a fascist state.
Avatar 5:53pm TDK60:

Oh that's great, bring Ghouliani out from his casket.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:53pm Andrew Waterloo:

Are you looking for Monastery or Basilica?
  5:53pm ScottC:

  5:53pm SeanG:

floating rules
  5:54pm Dean:

Just try searching today for california secession online. The first several dozen results are all from the past day, due to MSM coverage of these yoyos. But if you view the wikipedia entry on Partition and secession in California you'll see a deep history. The more recent history, which long predates the 2016 POTUS campaign, demonstrates that there are many who felt like they were riding the Lynch bus well before this latest upheaval. This is a reality only clearly acknowledged by Trump.

Don't forget John Bolton. Gotta have John Bolton.
Avatar 5:55pm dale:

those little sheets of corn pads were a staple in my house growing up
  5:55pm nic:

  5:55pm SeanG:

bye nic
  5:55pm Nardo:

was driving but if no answered it was a mission in vertigo
  5:56pm Dean:

Hate can be a good emotion to express. Timorousness is a shitty emotion. I hate timorousness.
  5:56pm SeanG:

don't hide your hate!
  5:57pm Dean:

But for god's sake, hide your timorousness.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:57pm Carmichael:

Why do you think Christie has been licking Trump's boots so much?? He wants to be a cabinet member.
Avatar 5:57pm dale:

i was class of 77 - think the prom theme was 'colour my world' but i didn't go so......
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:58pm Carmichael:

You're a young man, Dale ...
  5:58pm Alex in Brooklyn:

The Arrival is based on a Ted Chiang short story, looks pretty good!
  5:58pm Alex in Brooklyn:

"The Story of Your Life" is pretty good reading, too!
Avatar 6:01pm dale:

feel ancient sometimes carmichael. but farts are still funny to me so i have that going for me.
  6:35am John from CDA:

Here's an observation on Perrey-Kingsley's "Spooks In Space": back in the '70s, it was used as the theme music for Jack Barry's "The Joker's Wild".
