Listener comments!

  8:03pm P-90:

Permission to board, Commander Ryker?
Avatar 8:07pm Bethany Ryker:

Well, P-90, I suppose if we're getting all "Next Generation" I have to request that you spell my last name differently - That would be Commander William Riker. Though we would bother be of Dutch Lineage....
Avatar 8:09pm Bethany Ryker:

But hop on!!
  8:11pm Rynac:

I have never before heard anything by Pogorelich. I'm taken by his contrast between tranquility and stress.
Avatar 8:16pm ranjit:

I recognize the narrator!
Avatar 8:16pm Linda Lee:

good evening! that's Bowie reading.
  8:17pm P-90:

  8:17pm JakeGould:

Thin White Duke?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:17pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...oh wait...know this guy...did some Brecht...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm dale:

bowie recorded this in 1936? doesn't seem possible.
Avatar 8:18pm Bethany Ryker:

Yay, y'all!

Can I admit I never knew Bowie recorded this until TODAY. Yeah. I'm behind the times, since it was recorded in 1977~~~
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Ken From Hyde Park:

OK...without peeking, who can name the characters and the associated instruments?
  8:18pm P-90:

And an excellent performance of "The Aquarium" under the break
Avatar 8:19pm Bethany Ryker:

Well, Ken - the narrator is giving it all away in the intro. Personal bias: THE WOLF
  8:19pm Gregor:

Like the Bowie version, but the Viv Stanshall version's even better.
Avatar 8:19pm Linda Lee:

Peter is the strings! Grandfather is the bassoon! the kettle drums is the hunter's gun!
  8:19pm Flint Mish:

What a wonderful show. I haven't heard Peter and the Wolf for years and I believe I still have the album from so long ago.
  8:20pm Listener Robert:

Years ago my friends Charlie & Nadine & I were watching the Super Bowl on TV, and some commercials came on featuring bears. I said, "OK for the bears, but what about the wolves?" And the next commercial came on playing "Peter and the Wolf".
Avatar 8:20pm Linda Lee:

this is so lovely for a chilly night in front of a fire. thank you Bethany! so appreciate A440!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:21pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Oh, it's kind of noisy here and I'm not able to make out what the narrator is saying.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm dale:

bowie is like the danny kaye of the glam era.
Avatar 8:22pm Linda Lee:

i'd like to know what he was wearing. i see him in silk pajamas.
Avatar 8:23pm Bethany Ryker:

Linda, he has a pretty intense look on his face on the album cover!
Avatar 8:24pm Linda Lee:

i need to find that album cover! :-)
Avatar 8:24pm Linda Lee:

love the voices
  8:25pm stib:

@Linda: You mean like these? http://bit.ly/2eD0DPD
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:26pm dale:

  8:27pm andrew:

dale, really interesting analogy.both sorta charming and lovable. oh and crazy talented.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm dale:

this reminds me of hans christian anderson for some reason.
Avatar 8:28pm Linda Lee:

@dale ~ lovely shot, that. but i'm thinking looser, topped with a kimono.
Avatar 8:29pm Linda Lee:

i'm sorry, i meant to answer stib on the pjs.
Avatar 8:29pm Bethany Ryker:

The original vinyl release had GREEN VINYL with the typical RCA Red seal. I can't look it up now, but very curious what the original pressing is going for on eBay these days...someone want to poke around and see??
Avatar 8:30pm Linda Lee:

40 dollars for the forest green vinyl.
Avatar 8:31pm Bethany Ryker:

First time I've played David Bowie on A440 ;)
Avatar 8:32pm Linda Lee:

i'm loving it!
Avatar 8:32pm Bethany Ryker:

And possibly the longest piece I've played in its entirety!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:32pm dale:

look for the carol channing peter and the woof album!
  8:35pm JakeGould:

@dale: What about “Foster Brooks’ Peter and the Wolf?”
Avatar 8:35pm Linda Lee:

just yesterday i was reading an interview with Angie ~ quite the piece of work, she is. apparently an author of a memoir about their lives as a couple. she couldn't have done so while he lived. sort of a strange mental juxtaposition, hearing this now.
Avatar 8:35pm ranjit:

I don't know how I feel about pronouncing it "lassoo" instead of "lasso."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm Ken From Hyde Park:

We had a record of Peter and the Wolf when we were kids. I wonder (1) where it's at now and (b) who narrated it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:36pm dale:

jake - HA!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:37pm dale:

we had the chipmunks doing the beatles on liberty records - not quite the same....
Avatar 8:38pm ranjit:

The hunters' theme reminds me of the jawas in the original star wars.
Avatar 8:38pm Bethany Ryker:

And Ranjit, what are your feelings about "sheduelle"?
Avatar 8:38pm Linda Lee:

LOL dale!
Avatar 8:38pm ranjit:

I guess I can forgive Bowie almost anything.
Avatar 8:41pm Linda Lee:

apparently Bowie was so upset about the Stones song 'Angie' that he ran off to the south of France with his son to seduce Bianca Jagger!
why must these thoughts sully my listening experience?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:42pm dale:

i think it's great - we should have heard this once the week of his passing instead of some of the songs we heard constantly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:43pm dale:

he had a meneige with his son, linda?
Avatar 8:44pm Linda Lee:

highly doubt it .. unless he was even kinkier than we know. the boy was a young child.
Avatar 8:46pm Linda Lee:

love the Carnival of the Animals!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:47pm dale:

i donated, but forget to enter my cat squeakers. of well, he wouldn't win the talent portion of the contest.
Avatar 8:49pm Linda Lee:

wait til you hear the fishes. i love the fishes.
Avatar 8:50pm ranjit:

Are the wild asses doing a slow-motion can-can??
Avatar 8:51pm ranjit:

oops, maybe it's the kangaroos, but kangaroos don't do anything in slow motion!
Avatar 8:51pm geezerette:

such dignified, stately asses.
Avatar 8:52pm Bethany Ryker:

Here are the Kangaroos!!
Avatar 8:55pm Linda Lee:

shoot. what was the last bit? that's the one i mean.
Avatar 8:56pm geezerette:

the pop-up claims to be playing Saint-saens but it's re-playing Morricone Island. Definition of artificial intelligence...gotta toggle some stuff.
Avatar 8:57pm Linda Lee:

yes, the Aquarium. that's my favorite.
Avatar 8:58pm geezerette:

Yay! In synch again. :)
Avatar 8:58pm Linda Lee:

watching the boys singing this is fun. they're trying to stay serious.
Avatar 8:59pm ranjit:

Someone on twitter posted this 17th century piece for cuckoo, cat, dog, and bass today! www.youtube.com...
