This one's recognizable from the first few seconds.
Hi Irene and Friends
Avatar 9:14pm geezerette:

Evening Irene & music lovers!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Irene Trudel:

Hi geezerette & P-90! Tonight, all singles 'cause it's Singles Going Steady Week here at WFMU. It's a fun diversion to keep us remembering our roots. And we're hoping it'll spur some of you to pledge your support to WFMU's Silent Fundraiser. Click on the dog & cow at the top of the page to help us out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:31pm Mike East:

A guy showed up for a Jimmy Heath rehearsal last week...he didn't get the memo that they moved the rehearsal to a different studio. I felt bad.
Avatar 9:38pm Linda Lee:

good evening Irene & listeners! always appreciate hearing Space Oddity on vinyl, the way i heard it originally.
Avatar 9:40pm Linda Lee:

hard to imagine how amazing & intriguing it was, seeing that album cover for the first time.
  9:47pm P-90:

Bowie and Conkite, together again for the first time. You heard it here, Kids.
Pledge a few bucks to make sure you hear more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Irene Trudel:

Linda, I still have the original picture sleeve 45 that I bought back in the day. You can tell by the scratchiness of the playback. Always loved Space Oddity-- one of the most original-sounding tunes of its time.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:06pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Thank You Mr. Bowie for visiting our insane planet.
Originality...His Producer Tony Visconti thot it too obvious a cop on the Apollo project - derivative of Lennon & stuff! So Gus Dudgeon did it - & of course Visconti flipped...
...Was not quite five when we landed on the Moon. Such awe & optimism - leaving the planet! Sold on Spacey stuff for life...Soon enuff, they're playing golf up there...& only now talk of maybe going to Mars - about 1,000 times further than the Moon...
Many hold that only chauvinism keeps Joni from being recognized as often as the Dylans & such as a Greatest Writer...

Hi. I got my Walter Cronkite fix at "tower" at film forum today; there's footage of him at end. SEE this documentary (oh wait, it leaves ff today. Never mind).---- I mailed my Silent Check on Saturday. & included a 1% boost, as a principled statement.

HizBobness's 2nd major peak - the painful Watergate~Divorce era...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30pm coelacanth:

RR @10:06 i agree with those that contend that about Joni. if we're just talking about lyrics, she may not be on Dylan's level (pre-"desire" dylan, that is), but certainly up there with Cohen and Lennon and Buckley -etc.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Nobody is on Bob's level...@ his best. Tho' Cohen is close - more consistent if far far less prolific. An interesting contrast. But even he felt Dylan's heavy influence. Hard to imagine a world w/out say 'Both Sides Now'...
  10:32pm KP:

Appears the donation mechanism has gone askew, Irene. I promise I will deliver, via computer, ferry or light rail, whatever it takes!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33pm coelacanth:

(...actually i said pre-desire, but really he was only sometimes shining by blood on the tracks. i think john wesley harding was his last lyrically brilliant album.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Deffo - he says himself: 'I can do many things - I can't do that now.'

Aw, jeez KP. We've been having more than our share of problems with our new fundraising software. Thanks for your patience. If anyone feels moved to donate, you could email me, irene@wfmu.org, and I'll pass it alone to those who need to know.
Avatar 10:36pm geezerette:

Hi guys. It's a miracle Dylan is still here!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm coelacanth:

yeah... the thing about Leonard Cohen, for me, is by his third or forth album he was getting pretty cheezy in the music/arrangement dept. -i really can't listen to much of that, even though i know there are lyrical treats to behold.
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 10:41pm Michael 98145:

glad you had fun with yours. that's what they're for! :-)
Avatar 11:25pm Van in DC:

1985 I discovered KaTe. 9 years after her Tour of Life. I waited for the next tour. And waited. And waited. And waited. Oooooh, about THIRTY ONE YEARS. I was lucky SO LUCKY to get one single ticket for one of her residency shows in 2014 in London. OMG it was like a religious experience to see her live. Finally!!
Avatar 11:25pm Van in DC:

Avatar 11:26pm Linda Lee:

no, it's someone else.
Avatar 11:27pm Linda Lee:

they had only this hit song, iirc.

I mean 6 years after her original tour. Not 9.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:28pm coelacanth:

Chris M through some people off when he put white bird on after an intense (probably metal-ish) batch of songs, once.
Avatar 11:28pm Van in DC:

Best $3500 I've ever spent for a single concert. KaTe. I would have paid triple that.
Avatar 11:29pm Van in DC:

(that was for the ticket, airplane, hotel, week in London...)
Avatar 11:30pm Linda Lee:

when this song came out, you it was possible to lose a phone number.
Avatar 11:31pm Linda Lee:

shit. :-D
  11:31pm KP:

A bit of a coincidence Irene. A little byrdy told me "White Bird" was the first song King Penguin performed publicly. That's when they earned their wings!
Avatar 11:32pm Van in DC:

But who are they? To me, the woman sounded amazingly like one Sandy Denny... or was that just me?
Avatar 11:33pm Linda Lee:

who was It's A Beautiful Day? i don't know!
Avatar 11:33pm Linda Lee:

yes she did.
Avatar 11:34pm Van in DC:

Love Haydn. Big fan of classical music here :)
  11:34pm mark r:

The woman who sang "White Bird" with It's a Beautiful Day was named Pattie Santos.
Avatar 11:34pm Linda Lee:

her name was Pattie Santos. en.wikipedia.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35pm coelacanth:

Linda @11:25, i sure did. we had weird old children's records, one which was Danny Kaye, which i hated. i soon learned that if i place the beatles 45 strategically on top of the Danny Kaye record i could make Mr. Kaye repeat certain lines indefinitely. (ie: "if ants were called elephants & elephants ants, i'd be able to squash...and squash...and squash..."
Avatar 11:36pm Linda Lee:

you're someone after my own heart for sure. i'm all for the vinyl experiments & doing things you're not supposed to :-D

So I just verified my login with PayPal. Plenty of $$$. Did anything come through the pledge?
  11:41pm mark r:

"Isn't It A Pity" is one of the best songs he ever did, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm coelacanth:

mark, it sure was. my older brother had it. i grew to like the entire thing.
Avatar 11:42pm Van in DC:

on a related note, White Eagle was one of the greatest Tangerine Dream albums ever. Along with "Exit".
  11:43pm P-90:

Always thought of this as George's "Hey Jude" , it just builds and builds into this crescendo of extended choruses. Or the album track does, this may be a "single edit" for 45. Oh yeah, and Slowhand...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43pm coelacanth:

haha! that^ was regarding the compilation! but it could almost apply to "isn't it a pity" too!
Avatar 🥁 Swag For Life Member 11:44pm Michael 98145:

thank you again, DJ Irene
Avatar 11:44pm Van in DC:

I wonder if any FMU DJ other than a certain someone has a single from either Toyah or Nina Hagen? :D
Avatar 11:45pm Van in DC:

ooooh, how about David Sylvian or Japan? Even better, Kitaro. Wow. Those just do not exist.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm coelacanth:

i don't think Clapton's on this track, RR.
  11:46pm mark r:

Let's not forget Mr. Spector's contribution. I guess I never realized this was a single. Kind of a weird choice for a single, yeah?
Avatar 11:46pm Van in DC:

Was there ever even a Pink Floyd 45?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47pm coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm coelacanth:

well pink floyd probably wanted the songs to be heard in the context of the albums; but the companies are always gonna try to capitalise on it.

There were a lot of weird John Birchers back then, too, Tommy. It just seems like there are more of them now because instead of standing on a street corner handing out leaflets, they're on the internet. They're still a crackpot minority.
