This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Welcome Melinda!
  Thu. 10/20/16 7:04pm Ed:

HI Melinda!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:05pm melinda:

A Bee Gees show, how exciting! Unfortunately I'll have to duck out for an hour at some point, but, archives later.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:05pm Flash Strap:

How are we all feeling? Up to a big old night of Gibbs?
  Thu. 10/20/16 7:07pm Ed:

Feeling great, you actually opened my eyes to early Bee Gees a while back with Sweet Song of Summer
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:07pm just julia:

YES! i have waited for this day!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:08pm ndbob:

Hi Melinda! and Julia!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:09pm Flash Strap:

Ed: SO glad!

JustJulia my friend I'm so glad you're here! This day would be false without you
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:11pm ndbob:

I remember taking a while making up my mind re buying Odessa - but I did
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:13pm just julia:

such a sad coke jingle! everything is bittersweet with these boys, i can't get enough of it
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:13pm Flash Strap:

same here, Bob. I couldn't get into at first, and it was a real moment of just deciding to listen to it until it clicked, which it did of course
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:14pm Flash Strap:

the saddest coke jingle imaginable. coke brings momentary pleasure to an agonized life – and that's the best we can hope for
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:21pm melinda:

I love what you just said about BeeGees vs. Rothko.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:25pm ndbob:

@Evan I couldn't resist the cover though
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 7:29pm Carmichael:

Heya Flash. Ii I just love the Odessa album!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:29pm Flash Strap:

It's irresistible!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:30pm Flash Strap:

Hi Carm! Me too!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:31pm Flash Strap:

I love that it's Robin doing the Gregorian parts
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:32pm Flash Strap:

also, the harmonies on the chorus are just INSANE
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:33pm Flash Strap:

ALSO, huge mellotron sounds on this album. One of the ultimate mellotron LPs
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 7:35pm northguineahills:

I've only heard the band Catherine's (90s indie/grunge on TVT recs) of Every Christian Lion Hearted Man Will Show You. It's actually rather decent.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:36pm Flash Strap:

Hi NGH!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:36pm melinda:

To Love Somebody is such a great song.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:37pm Flash Strap:

one of the best. Nina Simone's version is even better than this one, but only barely (which is amazing in and of itself)
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:40pm melinda:

I heard the Nina Simone version first. I love that one too.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:40pm Flash Strap:

GOD her delivery
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:46pm Flash Strap:

This song is hilarious
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:46pm melinda:

They sound really different here. For a minute I thought the show was down and we'd switched over to the GTDR stream.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:48pm Flash Strap:

yeah, they're like 14 or something there, and really going for an Everly Brothers sound. Their early stuff is all over the place
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:48pm ndbob:

I remember when Bee Gees First came out there was some controversy when Richard Goldstein in the NY Times said it was better than Sgt. Pepper
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:51pm Flash Strap:

there's nothing on it as good or brilliant as Day in the Life, but I think it's sort of a better album, myself. Sort of
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:53pm ndbob:

@Evan I think it holds up a lot better overall
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:54pm melinda:

I like every version I've heard of To Love Somebody, thus far.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:55pm just julia:

love hearing these sweet somebody/nobody covers
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 7:55pm ndbob:

i agree Melinda
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 7:59pm melinda:

I don't have that Nina Simone album, but I think those songs are all on a compilation I have that also includes a great version of Randy Newman's I Think It's Gonna Rain Today.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:00pm ndbob:

weirdly enough the first version of I Think It's Gonna Rain Today was by Julius LaRosa
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:02pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - catch the rest later!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 8:04pm melinda:

@Bob: interesting! never heard of him.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:11pm Flash Strap:

see ya bob!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Robin's voice – seriously now – is so incredibly versatile and not of this earth. one of my very favorite singers
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:14pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Hey over here !
...Yeah - being born in Nov.'63 - you would hear this evocative weirdo stuff on the radio in the HitParade. Another world - yaknow?
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:15pm Flash Strap:

plus, i mean, look at this guy: i1.mirror.co.uk...
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:16pm Flash Strap:

Hi there, Rev. Rab!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:18pm Flash Strap:

"And The Sun Will Shine" was performed by Robin in a single take, with him ad-libbing a great deal of the lyrics
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 8:20pm melinda:

Great photo! I had an uncle who sort of looked like young Robin, in the 70s. Sans hat.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:24pm Flash Strap:

he has such an amazing face, it completely entrances me
Avatar    Thu. 10/20/16 8:28pm hyde:

phew. made it.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:28pm Flash Strap:

HYDE, welcome old bean!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:29pm just julia:

the harmonies on "hold on!" - i could cry, this song moves me so.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:29pm Flash Strap:

"it's only her love that keeps me wearing this dirt"

!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:30pm just julia:

!!!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:34pm Flash Strap:

crazy vocals on this one
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Thu. 10/20/16 8:35pm melinda:

This is amazing.
Avatar    Thu. 10/20/16 8:36pm hyde:

i'm not too well versed in this early Bee Gees stuff. the gf has a bunch of these records, but i've never really delved into them that much. as a rock child of the late seventies/early eighties, i mostly had bad Bee Gees vibes that kept me away from them for years...
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:37pm Little Danny:

Hi Flash and everyone!

Haha, thanks Evan
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:42pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Compares favorably for instance to Lou Reed riffing on 'Andy's Chest'. Robin Gibb over Lou...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:45pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:47pm Little Danny:

Totally agree on the VU vibe. "I Close My Eyes" and "Red Chair Fadeaway" also have similar vibes
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:50pm Flash Strap:

LD! I was just thinkin' about you brother
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:50pm Flash Strap:

love that 45, LD, love it to death
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:51pm Flash Strap:

THAT is a fearless vocal performance
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:51pm northguineahills:

@Hyde: I myself never considered the Bee Gees until the last few years, as I always associated them w/ corporate disco, but even then I dug the vocals.... That said, I always found Robin Gibb's "Worse Girl In Town" remind me of 2005ish Animal Collective for some reason...
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:54pm Flash Strap:

yeah, it completely baffles me how we've got cultural amnesia about the Bee Gees' first decade of music... but they were a total revelation to me at a certain point, and it was like, whoa why did no one tell me about this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:54pm Little Danny:

Goddamn I love the Bee Gees
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 8:55pm Flash Strap:

I mean, they were totally competitive to the Beatles and Stones. They were huge
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:55pm northguineahills:

My excuse is that the disco Bee Gees were already a thing when I was one years old/
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 8:57pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- yeah - all the early 60s radio hits ('Massachusetts') - always loved them
...& then discovered the '1st' album - which is so great. But 'Odessa' I've only heard about! So this is great...
Avatar    Thu. 10/20/16 8:57pm hyde:

@ngh haha, my excuse is they were a thing when i was fifteen

Hi C!

Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:04pm Flash Strap:

@RR: so glad to be able to play it for you, friend!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:05pm Flash Strap:

I think the instrumentals on this album are so crucial, so glad no one talked them out of using them
Avatar    Thu. 10/20/16 9:06pm hyde:

but really, what's ever better than a failed concept album
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 9:06pm coelacanth:

i don't think i've ever heard "odessa". that last track was great.
...i did miss my favorite though. ("i started a joke".)
Avatar    Thu. 10/20/16 9:07pm hyde:

i need a copy of this LP
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 9:09pm northguineahills:

Actually, I had a roommate who was really into this period of the Beegees and played them a lot, but unfortunately, I wasn't into pop music back then (right after college).
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:09pm Flash Strap:

it's so nice to have a good vinyl copy of it, since it's all in velvet, but I have always found them to be a little muddy and usually prefer to listen to my digital copies (remastered, inevitably)

some later LP pressings have neither the velvet nor the full tracklist, so beware
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:09pm Flash Strap:

Key line in this song is "I declared war on Spain"
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 9:11pm northguineahills:

@Flash: Sounds like something McKinley would say.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:13pm Flash Strap:

I think it's part of their general Nelson fetish
Avatar    Thu. 10/20/16 9:13pm hyde:

ha, apparently the significant other has a velvet copy of Odessa. but the LP's are packed!

The year of 'Tommy' & 'Abbey Road'...

Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 9:34pm coelacanth:

here's the first bee gees song i ever heard. my parents bought the 45. the whole family was into it.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:34pm Flash Strap:

It's so cool!
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:35pm junglepete:

I like that it went from plaintive to celebratory at the end there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Thu. 10/20/16 9:35pm coelacanth:

big Lennon influence on that last part. that's probably why we all loved it.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:36pm Flash Strap:

Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:41pm Flash Strap:

oh, indeed
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:43pm Flash Strap:

this song is just totally bugnuts crazy. it's scary, sort of
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:46pm junglepete:

The spooky end to "Paper Mache" segues nicely into this.
Avatar Thu. 10/20/16 9:48pm Flash Strap:

I've been so jazzed about the Bee Gees tonight I was sort of derelict in my duties concerning fundraising, but look where else can you hear a guy just play 3 hours of his favorite Bee Gees songs? Donate to WFMU today, be a hero

i agree, JP!

here to express another in a series of unpopular opinions... i haven't researched it a great deal but, i think Maurice was my favorite vocalist of the Gibbs brothers.
