Senior year again tonight -- cool!

Annabella. NeoPsych farfisa. This must be the place.
  9:10pm herb.nyc:

Right; some of us are senior citizens
  9:14pm JakeGould:

1981! The year I was in JHS with a teacher who would give us 7" singles for doing good in class and some kid gave me a mixtape whose opening track was Sparks "This Town Ain't Big Enough for Both of Us." So yeah... 1981 music!
Avatar 9:19pm coelacanth:

solid gold = a perfect album!
...hi Evan and Funkies
Avatar 9:19pm Cheri Pi:

This may be my favorite year for music
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

PostPunk, PreAlternative. Reagan. MTV only just starts. No R.E.M. yet.
  9:22pm Laura:

You read my mind! I was just thinking of Tenpole Tudor!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:24pm Dave in SoDak:

This is so perfect! I got my FCC license on June 15, 1981. My first slot (and show) was 12am to 4am, and the GM and PD were listening... Next day they gave me - wait for it - WEDNESDAYS 7-10PM (Central). Kismet. So many memories of that huge musty old 19th century building, top floor, windows open, and a record collection to die for. I remember ALL of this stuff! Rock it, EFD. Rock it hard. And don't forget the Stranglers and P-Furs. <3
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm Dave in SoDak:

Cheri Pi, absolutely agree. Actually anything from 77 to 82 was awesome. I just have a really soft spot for '81, for reasons previously explained.
  9:26pm JakeGould:

  9:27pm GW:

Always a great show Evan . I think you were among the first to play all of these on the radio stateside . Just a great era and time to be out there and dancing and hearing a non stop wave of great music . Thanks.
  9:28pm Stevel:

Moved to Madison midway through my sophomore year, right as 81 began. No school for a semester. Worked as a hotel maid ands started shooting photos for The Daily Cardinal, UW-Madison daily paper (well, Monday thru Friday).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28pm Dave in SoDak:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29pm efd:

thanks much for tuning in and all the comments everyone! Gonna be tough to comment between the mostly short songs and short sets but I'm reading and enjoying all of yours.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Dave in SoDak:

Oh, shit... Cabaret Voltaire and PIL Second Edition... So much ear candy...
  9:31pm Stevel:

Right on, Dave. Fuck ''em Bucky!
  9:31pm JakeGould:

@SteveL: Wasn't Madison a heavy duty slacker and party school back then? I heard stories about the riots on State Street back then. Lived there in the 1990s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm Dave in SoDak:

I get really great vibes *still* when I visit Madison. Don't know why...
  9:34pm Stevel:

Jake: relatively quiet '81 through '85 (so much for the 4-year degree!). Demonstrations against US involvement in ElSalvador and Regan in general.
  9:34pm IFisher:

A right chequebook-loosening playlist if there ever was one-
Wah! Crucial 1/3
  9:35pm herb.nyc:

1981- I think I went to Max's Kansas Ciry for 1st (and only) time. Maybe Tuff Darts played. --Shambecko Say Wah(?)
Avatar 9:35pm Cheri Pi:

I was 10, just moved to Seattle and discovered college radio
  9:37pm Stevel:

Madison was Berkeley of the Midwest, or so we still hoped. Plenty of beer, booze and drugs, but it WAS the early 80s. No AIDS yet, at least not early on.
  9:37pm IFisher:

Wah! The Mongrel
  9:40pm herb.nyc:

I have library copy of John Doe 's personal history of LA punk. I'll look for the 1981 bits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41pm Dave in SoDak:

My experience in Madison was hanging out with grad students and doing *responsible* stuff, i guess. no craziness, just a lot of great sightseeing, frank lloyd wright, all that. beautiful in the fall. the lake. and really great local bread, pastries, and of course, beer.
  9:41pm Stevel:

Herb: I first heard Tuff Darts on cool radio in Denver. I was buying flowers for prom and they played "She's Dead". Not sure I shared that with my date later that evening.
  9:42pm JakeGould:

Was Hotel Washington a venue complex back in the 1980s? That was an amazing venue when it existed. Caught fire in the late 1990s. Two venues, multiple bars and it was an old hotel as well.
Avatar 9:44pm coelacanth:

I nominate EFD for the new FMU morning zoo program! :-)
  9:48pm Stevel:

Yes. Club De Wash. Cafe Palms (late-night eggs Florentine) The Barbers Closet (ice cream-drinks, secret entrance) and Rods, a relatively intense gay bar (neon sign depicting two penises meeting head to head) There may have been one more place. I was sad when I heard it burned.

My claim to fame was a pic of Paul Westerberg singing, curled up on the floor (shooting straight down from a chair). It ended up on the Hootenanny album.
  9:49pm Stevel:

Seconding morning zoo duty.
  9:50pm JakeGould:

@EFD: The The.

@SteveL: Very cool! Hotel De Wash was like a mini hipster mall in the good sense.
Avatar 9:51pm Cheri Pi:

When I get nostalgic I listen to the old mic breaks from 1983 that I found on YouTube
  9:52pm Stevel:

Jake: it also had urinals big enough to sleep in. ( I did not sleep in the urinals. )

I had a tape that had OMD (US release from 81 - kind of a combo of first two albums) and on the other side, X Wild Gift. I played that thing so goddamn much...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Dave in SoDak:

EFD, I heart you. #fleshtonesbitch
  10:04pm Stevel:

Ah, Fleshtones! Pretty sure they came through in '81. Probably the second show I shot in town. Maybe 20 people there. A year later they packed the place (Merlyn's)

Dave, I think the first show I shot was Human Sexual Response (Jackie O)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Dave in SoDak:

Stevel - YES!
  10:05pm Stevel:

Roman Gods may be a perfect album. Played the hell out of it for years.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:07pm Dave in SoDak:

When did Romeo Void "Never Say Never" come out? Had to have been around this year...
Avatar 10:08pm JakeGould:

@SteveL: Yes! Lived there from 1995 to 2001. Didn’t go to school there. Just needed a change of pace from NYC, so moved to a place where rent was cheap, apartments were (are?) decent, and lots of stuff to do in walking distance.

Avatar 10:15pm JakeGould:

“Gleaming Spires” debut album was in 1981… Just saying!
Avatar 10:19pm geezerette:

'81 was a great year. Yep.
Avatar 10:19pm JakeGould:

@SteveL: Maybe! For me I was entranced by all of the snow since I never grew up with it that intense before, but by the end of my run there was getting some serious seasonal affective disorder. So hey!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Think I had 'bullrushes' playing in my head for *decades* til efd put a name on it for me.
  10:20pm GW:

Ah , the Bongos . Playing a couple of gigs soon in the area. They gave me "Drums Along the Hudson" when I was working the door at the Peppermint Lounge in 81
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:21pm efd:

whoa, that's pretty cool GW! I've got some fond memories of the Pep (the 45th street location, never made it down after the move to 5th Ave)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22pm melinda:

I like Madison, from the few times I visited. I kinda thought of it as the Austin of the upper Midwest (grew up in Austin so that was my reference point).
  10:23pm Stevel:

Melinda: Yup. Cool and not a lot like the rest of the state.
  10:24pm john:

Hey Evan! Half the show and two thirds of the game...what'd I miss?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:24pm melinda:

Both state capitals, too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25pm braveness23:

B23 here! Holy shit, this show is a real toe tapper!
Avatar 10:26pm JakeGould:

@GW: You worked the door at the Peppermint Lounge? Damn!
  10:26pm GW:

Funny that Ev , I didnt last at the new location . I got fired for arriving late to my post on the second night of Flock of Seagulls. The dude with the haircut was turned away out front . Didnt really enjoy them. He got in on time to get on stage.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm melinda:

UW-Madison also has one of the coolest student union buildings, too. Not that I've visited many, but it felt old and grand.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27pm efd:

hey john! I think you've already enumerated what you missed! :D Thanks for joining in!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28pm efd:

the Flock Of Seagullls "dude with the haircut" -- can you be a liittle more specific??:)

  10:32pm Steve:

no; i have that ep. the one guy's hair is already pretty laughable!
Avatar 10:34pm Howard F:

Hey everyone! How about some DAF?
  10:34pm GW:

The lead singer , with the haircut , I got there late and someone had turned him away . Which was funny. I would go up to the office and grab one of the demo cassettes that bands would send in , and tape over them via the board in the dj booth
Avatar 10:35pm coelacanth:

in god we trust, inc. is from '81. what can we expect to hear from that? - just kidding! ( -i know that's not your jam.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36pm Dave in SoDak:

Memory: Canoeing down the Sioux River with my friend Rick, with a case of beer and a portable stereo thinger, playing Flock of Seagulls on one side and Men at Work on the other. Rick got drunk and stood up, canoe tips over, I save Rick (because just now he tells me he can't swim), but lost the crappy blaster and Flock and MAW tape. Rick's a good shit. Good times...
  10:37pm Stevel:

Coel: Now yer talkin'! That ep peeled paint!
  10:37pm GW:

The only ones I have around are Fear live a few nights after Belushi died. The band had me put a small JB up on the marquee. Then Johnny Thunders on Valentines day 1981 live at the Pep. Also I taped the Nihilistics .
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm braveness23:

I bought this A flock of seaguls album in Canada on a vacation in 1981. I bought it purely because of their haitcuts. I couldnt listen to it until i got back to the states. Within a week or two it was all that MTV was playing. A couple weeks later i went to see the Go Go's and to my delight AFOS was the openning act. Cheri Pi now has my vinyl copy of this album! I love ya, CP!

Such an evocative show, what a list. Haven't thought about some of these bands since that year. Hanging at the Hotel Diplomat, shows in the ballroom there.

  11:31pm cheri:

well time for me to say goodnight all, been a long day, see you all soon!
  11:32pm JakeGould:

I was 13 in 1981.
Avatar 11:32pm coelacanth:

ginger was on the abominable, just for the sake of income album.
  11:33pm Steve:

According to Wikipedia it's these 4 tracks from 'ALBUM' that Ginger Baker played the drums on: Fishing, Round, Bags, Ease.
Avatar 11:34pm coelacanth:

yeh, i'm not sure how that qualifies as a pil album.
  11:36pm Steve:

They could be classified as John Lydon solo albums after the original line-up of PIL broke apart.

I was 10 in 1981. I didn't know anything that wasn't on top 40 radio or MTV at the time.
  11:37pm Stevel:

I was 20 in July.
Avatar 11:38pm coelacanth:

right, Steve. there wasn't even a band on that album. it was just session/guest musicians. (i'm pretty sure)
  11:38pm Steve:

  11:38pm phat:

why wouldn't a bunch of British artists just make a disco record?
Avatar 11:38pm Mary Wing:

Jake, is a reverse mitzvah a good thing? If so, let the dollars flow!

I was 5 in 1981, and I wouldn't know anything that wasn't on MTV Top 40 until I was 16. (I was a late bloomer).

@melinda & northguineahills:

fortunately, even 1980's top 40 was awesome.

My theory is that Hitler hasn't been killed by time travelers because everybody's using their time machines to go clubbing in the 80's.
  11:45pm JakeGould:

@MaryWing: Money is good. Please donate folks! $81 is great!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46pm melinda:

@bkd69: I have great memories of early 80s top 40, not so much later, but by then I was seeking out 60s rock & folk, so I had alternatives.
  11:47pm bkd69:

@efd: well, if you're not going to play the cramps, the dynamic hepnotics is an acceptable substitute.

And there's a show theme, for you...cover bands you've never heard...bands that are nigh indistinguishable from their more famous stylistic kin.
  11:47pm cheri:

oh evan, i'm so looking forward to the singles going 70s show, how cool is that? i'll be tuning in on the 26th! well night for real!
Avatar 11:52pm Mary Wing:

Let's not forget the fabulous show when Evan had Paul Humphries of OMD as his guest--pledge for great archives! wfmu.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:54pm efd:

I remember that show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm Ken From Hyde Park:

I remember the band Berlin had a few songs on the radio in 1981. "The Metro" for one, and some other tunes.
Avatar 11:55pm Mary Wing:

So do I, I took that picture of you and Paul. And got his autograph! :-)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm efd:

yes, I was going to mention that but wasn't sure if I should out you! :D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm melinda:

I remember 'The Metro'.
Avatar 11:58pm northguineahills:

Thanks EFD!
  11:58pm bkd69:

My defense of 80's top 40:

the 80's were the last decade a rockabilly song was in the top 40
The last decade Irving Berlin had a song in the top 40
the last decade Herbie Hancock had a song in the top 40
the last decade Slade had not one, but two songs in the top 40
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm melinda:

Great show! Nighty night.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Ken From Hyde Park:

Mayhem in 1981. Thanks, efd!
Avatar 12:00am coelacanth:

Thanks for playing our song, Peace Of Mind by The Swinging Laurels. Much appreciated, keeping the name and music alive ;-)
