hello~ why do i love this Mick Rossi piece so much? is it the soundtrack for the Liquid Sky sequel?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:08pm Irwin:

New album by Mick. The entire album is like this, thoroughly wonderful. He plays everything. He's a longtime member of Philip Glass's ensembles.

Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:10pm Irwin:

LL: Also, the album did start out as a soundtrack for a doc film, but it developed and expanded to become a standalone recording.
  Wed. 10/5/16 3:11pm jan:

Chrome / Albi No. 1 : Great sound! Turned it up loud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 3:11pm Linda Lee:

really does seem perfect for a sort of super-stylish dystopian punk sci-fi parable like LS! ~ wonder what that doc was about?

Because we're having a SILENT fundraiser (as we do every October), I'll be issuing appeals to your generosity here on the comments forum. See that Pledge Widget atop the playlist? Hit it and donate anything. It all goes into the WFMU slush fund for necessary expenses (NOT DJ salaries; we're volunteers).

Herman's Hermits are the best and I'm not afraid to admit it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:37pm melinda:

I like this Herman's Hermits.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:41pm Kat in Chicago:

I like this Steve Miller cover!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:42pm Irwin:

Scientists at SONY CSL Research Lab have created the first-ever entire songs composed by Artificial Intelligence: "Daddy's Car" and "Mister Shadow." The researchers have developed FlowMachines, a system that learns music styles from a huge database of songs. Exploiting unique combinations of style transfer, optimization and interaction techniques, FlowMachines composes novel songs in many styles. "Daddy's Car" is composed in the style of The Beatles. French composer Benoît Carré arranged and produced the songs, and wrote the lyrics.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:43pm Alison Porchnik:

It's catchy! I could dance to it. Speaking of, Dick Clark was in my dream last night.
Wed. 10/5/16 3:44pm Keith from Oregon:

Sounds like Fountains of Wayne.
Avatar    Wed. 10/5/16 3:45pm Bronwyn Bishop:

Good to hear from RSM
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 3:47pm Webhamster Henry:

This is really not bad for an artificially intelligent song. But far from the "first". Algorithmic song composition has been in effect for decades. There's even one for a Geniac toy computer of the late 50s.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 3:48pm Grok-o-matic:

Dang it, I take my headphones of for a few minutes and miss R. Stevie Moore and Flow Machines. Life ain't worth no more.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 3:48pm Webhamster Henry:

It's not even the first one to learn from other songs. But, let a million flowers bloom! I just don't like the word "first".
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:49pm Irwin:

AI has been used to compose music for decades (see: Raymond Scott), but I don't know about pop tunes in this manner. It could pass for something on the Merge label.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 3:54pm Webhamster Henry:

Exactly, you of all people should know about Raymond Scott's attempts to put himself out of business! But for example, David Cope's algorithmically generated Mozart has been around for about 20 years.
  Wed. 10/5/16 3:56pm MONEYBAG$:

Song was given to Steve Miller by a friend... You learn something new every day
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:57pm Kat in Chicago:

Author of "Wild Mountain Honey". News to me too www.stevemccarty.net
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 3:58pm Irwin:

Mozart weren't no Tin Pan Alley pop purveyor.
  Wed. 10/5/16 4:00pm MONEYBAG$:

Steve did write Shu Ba Da Du Ma Ma Ma Ma himself
Avatar Wed. 10/5/16 4:01pm βrian:

  Wed. 10/5/16 4:03pm Nikholis Planck:

wow what version of Reich is this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 4:05pm Irwin:

Nik: By Pea Hicks of Optiganally Yours. It's four Optigans, and that's the title as well. Not sure if he ever issued it.
Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 4:05pm Webhamster Henry:

I wonder if Bible Salesman is partly inspired by the Maysles' Salesman of 1969?
Avatar Wed. 10/5/16 4:07pm AnAnonymousParty:

Step 1: Define what life is and what large means in relation to it, then establish a scale of life-largeness so you can measure your progress objectively. Duh.
  Wed. 10/5/16 4:10pm Charles Manson:

Pay attention to him kids, he knows what he is talking about. I got one of those defective bibles that had "Thou shalt kill" printed in it, and look what happened to me.
Avatar Wed. 10/5/16 4:13pm βrian:

I bought my kitty a holey bauble. He loves it.
  Wed. 10/5/16 4:15pm Jack:

What I want is an effective bible, one that really works.
Avatar Wed. 10/5/16 4:17pm βrian:

Playing with your bible will make you go blind, Son.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 4:17pm Alison Porchnik:

My friend Doug Skinner used to hollow out Gideon bibles and put things like rubber monkeys in them or rig them so music came out when opened -- and then swap them out in motel rooms.
Avatar Wed. 10/5/16 4:19pm βrian:

Now that sounds like fun, Alison.

Avatar Swag For Life Member Wed. 10/5/16 4:30pm Mike East:

Hey Irwin - recently got sent a link to an article about sound fx that mentions my company...you are credited for providing a picture of a clavivox and info on Raymond Scott.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 4:31pm Irwin:

Can you post the link to the article, Mike? I'm not certain what it is.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 4:34pm Irwin:

That discarded chair looks like an upright open-air clown coffin.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 4:35pm Jeff:

Right? I'm having trouble imagining the rationale for that particular chair design.

I've always wanted to sleep in an open-air clown coffin.

I totally dig!
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 4:59pm Alison Porchnik:

@Michael - yes, there's been an outbreak of creepy clowns nationwide lately. Something to do with all those parents who don't vaccinate their kids.
  Wed. 10/5/16 5:00pm Laura L:

Maybe in time the chair owner came to realize she was not Alice in Wonderland after all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 5:13pm Irwin:

Shortly after this picture was taken, rats devoured the wretched piece of furniture.

"Cool it, Reba" Wasn't that a Soupy Sales thing? I think that's where I got it from.

That's what I said, Jack.
Avatar Swag For Life Member    Wed. 10/5/16 5:22pm Michael 98145:
