A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

hello all :)
Avatar 9:02am Trouble:

good morning o troubled ones. today's artwork is by Carmen Herrera. Has anyone seen her show yet? i want to go this weekend. hear it's gorgeous
Avatar 9:03am Trouble:

@bobdoesthigs: i saw a gorgeous little red fox on my vacation at the beach in RI this august
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Dave in Vermont:

is the shadow around the edge part of the art?
Avatar 9:05am bobdoesthings:

@trouble! - that was me , checking in on you!
Avatar 9:07am Trouble:

no @daveinvermont, i don't believe so
Avatar 9:07am bobdoesthings:

@daveinVT - looking at her work online and I'd guess that this is a photo and that the shadow is just the lighting in the space.
Avatar 9:10am Sem Chumbo:

Gorgeous music.
Good morning, Trouble and those with Trouble in their lives.
Avatar 9:11am Trouble:

although it also looked kind of silvery rouge, are the male and female foxes different shades?
Avatar 9:11am Trouble:

merci sem chumbo, bom dia
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am annie:

thursday!! this'll take some getting used to..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12am Adrian in London:

Hello all. We get lots of urban foxes here in south London. They make a lot of noise at night. One bit my shoe a while back – while my foot was still in it, I hasten to add.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:13am Fuzzy:

Redd Foxxes can be nasty.
Avatar 9:14am Trouble:

yikes adrian! i have read about the London fox problem!
Avatar 9:14am bobdoesthings:

well, I am no fox expert. But as a kid I had tons of books on wolves and foxes and I recall seeing some variation - I think it can also vary dependent on climate, locale, and age.. but not sure. I know I've seen photos of red foxes that were not the firey redish/orange that you might expect.
  9:14am chicken:

This song is mood
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am pantz:

I'm liking the vibe presented today. Has a gloomy, start of Fall bittersweet feel. Keep it coming, @Trouble.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Adrian in London:

@Trouble A friend got bitten by a squirrel too! But in general they're all very benign. The fox was just hungry and taking a little taste of my shoe – a Prada slip-on, no less! (But a very very old one…)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:20am Adrian in London:

I'm off out to take advantage of the sun but will catch up later. x
  9:26am chicken:

Miiiiiisssssssed you trouble! Glad you're back!!!

@ Trouble: I rarely have the opportunity to comment on your show because of my schedule; but I DO listen, so glad you're back. Thursdays are great, mavbe the most charmed schedule of the week on FMU. Just stealing a moment to post my gratitude that you're here. You've been one of the best for years now. Thanks!

Avatar 9:36am bobdoesthings:

are these new birds!?
  9:36am P-90:

Mayy Hopkin: SO underrated, one of those artists who almost had a HUGE career in "Pop", but the vagaries of the music business didn't permit it in the end. But beloved by loyal fans for almost half a century now...!
Avatar 9:37am thedunkel:

Good morning Trouble! Good morning All!
  9:37am JakeGould:

These canaries are kinda cute.
Avatar 9:38am Michael the Big Lanky Geordie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am annie:

hoboken train crash?
  9:42am P-90:

Folks today aren't aware how huge the canary-keeping business was for many decades. The Hartz company would send you canaries and a cage for your parlor,,\ and canary-feed and Victrola records and books to teach them to sing on command, all by mail-order. Kinda the Amazon of its day, but with livestock.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Guido from Cologne:

Hello Trouble!
Avatar 9:46am Trouble:

hello guido!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

Hi, Trouble -- so happy I'm actually listening to a show in real time for once.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:48am Ike:

Wawa is putting out records? What about Sheetz and Stewart's, them too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50am Ken From Hyde Park:

Yes, train crashed in the Hoboken station. www.nbcnews.com... Injuries but not immediate fatalities, it appears.
  9:50am JakeGould:

This cover of "Teenage Kicks" is great.
Avatar 9:52am the Canterbury wood-elf:

i haven't heard this for years. The singer is Liz Kershaw, who went on to be a DJ on BBC Radio 1 (as was her brother Andy, the "world music" guru). Choosing to cover John Peel's favourite song guaranteed at least *some* airplay at the time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:52am pantz:

Yes! Steve Miller at his best.
Avatar 9:52am Trouble:

hey bryan!! you win the award for long distance listening!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am annie:

mary hopkin is STILL performing and making music. so very cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:57am annie:

well, it's officially the season of cool nights, my coffee cup only stayed warm for about half an hour.

Nice coaching by Miles. Abracadabra is Steve Miller at his best?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02am Guido from Cologne:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am pantz:

Steve Miller is the ultimate cheesey Dad rock, so yes Abracadabra is him at his best.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

I wish I could send you a picture of the sun setting over the Arabian Gulf right now. This has been the perfect set to start a weekend.
Avatar 10:06am Trouble:

wowza!@listener bryan. and here we are in grey jersey city, and the BBC just called to see if anyone can talk to them about the hoboken train crash. weird
  10:07am JakeGould:

@Trouble: Someone should say that PATH service sucks on a good day, but this is ridiculous!
Avatar 10:09am Brian in UK:

Hello Trouble, for the umpteenth time no doubt YOUR BACK and your front and sides and everything.
Trust the op went well.
Avatar 10:09am bobdoesthings:

Im confused how a train could crash in the first place.. did it get derailed? I'm not familiar enough with the hoboken station..
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:10am annie:

they say it just didn't stop.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am sphere:

NYT says it crashed into the Hoboken station.
  10:11am Enrique:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am annie:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:11am coelacanth:

bob it was probably the end of the line.
  10:12am enrique:

thx trouble, heard it first from you
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:12am coelacanth:

...and hi Trouble and Troubled
Avatar 10:12am chromaphone:

I just remembered that Miles Davis found Steve Miller offensive. Obviously it is no coincidence that Trouble played tracks from his wife and Miller back to back.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

Sorry about the train.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am coelacanth:

hahaha! (chromaphone)

How does a train "crash into" a station?
  10:22am emily:

I, too, want to see the Carmen Herrara show. won't be in town this weekend. (sad face, cuz I'd love to see it with you).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am Ken From Hyde Park:

More info on centenarian artist Carmen Herrera. www.alchetron.com...

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am sphere:

"It appeared the train went through a bumper stop at the end of the track. It came to a stop in a covered area between the station's indoor waiting area and the platform." - from NBC News in DC
Avatar 10:26am Sem Chumbo:

If you were a long distance runner,Trouble, this set would = "hitting your stride."
A lotta fun, thanks.
  10:31am P-90:

Those passengers now have an EXCELLENT for taking the day off from work and going home to listen to WFMU. Put their feet up, maybe open a bottle of wine...
  10:32am P-90:

That conductor's gonna have to give some urine though,
Avatar 10:33am Trouble:

the hoboken train station, located above the underground PATH station, is built like a T. al the trains have engines in front and back so they can drive out the opposite way they entered. the train crashed through the end and probably derailed. the platform in front is always filled with people waiting for the next train departure. behind that is a gorgeous waiting room that lots of people also use. sounds devastating to the people involved and to the thousands of commuters who go through the station every day. The ferry is also connected to this station
  10:34am P-90:

And those "bumper stops" might need to be re-evaluated, might need a bit of re-engineering
  10:36am mary:

Saw the Herrera show yesterday. With my sister. It's great
Many surprises. Quite touched.
Just turned on radio and keeping it on while I make some drawings. You know, as CB said, and probably others, to teach myself to see.
Was missing your show and here you are on Thurs. Yay.
Great sound(s) as usual.
  10:36am P-90:

CNN now says "at least one dead, 100 hurt" in Hoboken
  10:37am JakeGould:

@P-90: Those bumper stops work fine. In this case it probably slowed the train down enough to prevent an even worse accident.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am coelacanth:

shit. it must've still been going pretty fast then.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am Greg from ZONE 5:

  10:38am P-90:

Ohhh, that conductor's gonna have to give a LOT of urine.
  10:38am peter:

Oh how Ive missed your birds.
Avatar 10:39am bobdoesthings:

@p-90 - hmm... if the conductor is even still with us. not sure where the conductor sits on those trains..
Avatar 10:39am Sem Chumbo:

@P-90: if he has any left in him after this disaster.
  10:39am P-90:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Ken From Hyde Park:

  10:43am JakeGould:

I think it's great to second guess and place blame on others in the immediate aftermath of an accident.

Hard to say which ''Misstra'' verse sums up Trump best but this would do: ''If he shakes/On a bet/He's the kind of dude that won't pay his debt''
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am coelacanth:

Good morning.D.J Trouble.Good morning all. Thanks for keeping freeform alive and kicking
Avatar 10:46am bobdoesthings:

I like to point out to people on the subway that the automated announcements are a bit sexist - when it's information being given "now arriving at.." it's a female voice. when it's telling you not to do something or to be courteous it's a male voice. interesting.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am AndrewC.:

From the BBC "A local radio station anchor said the train..."
Is that you, Trouble?
Avatar 10:46am bobdoesthings:

I guess the idea is the masculine voice is more liekly to be listened to?? and information is nicer to hear from a feminine voice... I dunno..
  10:46am P-90:

CNN.com now showing video taken "moments" after crash; witnesses say train hit a concrete wall in station so hard it "went airborne" and crashed into the ceiling of the station. Then of course the doors wouldn't open afterward, everyone had to crawl out the windows.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am sphere:

  10:59am Peter in Seattle:

Good Morning Trouble and listeners, it was a bee-U-T-ful dawn this morning out here.
Avatar 11:00am Brian in UK:

@coelacanth I believe if Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points had been followed at the end of WW1 it might not be in the mess that it is now. He seemed like a decent man from this distance.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Passaic River Blues:

@Brian in UK - Remember, however, that Wilson was an abject racist who segregated the White House. Everyone is terrible.

  11:14am P-90:

@Sen: Adams fought from day one for everything this country could be, He and Jefferson and Ben Franklin are the guys who really dreamed up what we call the "U.S." Then Hamilton came along and said: "wait, shouldn't the banks be running this?" ...and there you have it

SO easy to make fun of Dave Emory, but the truth is, a lot of what he's talked about for years is just the facts of history. He makes a strong, sober (mostly) argument for his central thesis: simply that Fascism is always lurking, expanding its influence, working to gain more control. Gotta love Dave. He's stuck with it for decades.

We are all horrified by the news out of Hoboken.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am coelacanth:

i know someone personally who's much like Mr. Emory. he rants and is right on point most of the time; but if he doesn't incite the response he wants he starts making shit up, which is very unfortunate because it wrecks his credibility. he is brilliant though.
...also, most people shut down when someone talks AT them. ...partly because people are so damned insecure that they don't want to admit they've been duped - even when it's unavoidably obvious.

trouble, thank you so much for allowing our [polite] political ramblings..

@Michael: Horrified? Or how about saddened.

Just tuning in from the West Coast, but will go back and listen to the archives as usual. Hope everyone is okay in Hoboken.

wow this has the real Hazelwood/Sinatra feel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am Rich in Washington:

Ah. It IS a Lee song. I've never heard of them before. They also covered Summer Wine, according to the googlebots.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50am annie:

well, it took me a long time to bear someone's rants, as i'd been verbally brow-beaten as we grew up. it trained me to debate.... i'm still not good

ßrian surprisingly, yes! Tho there are many that are diseased.
Just trying to get the last of em for jam.

Suzi Jane was Lee's ladybird! For awhile, at least..

Ours were gone by mid-July here in Wisconsin.

ßrian, maybe this is an indication to their hardiness, they are called "alpine" strawberries

I think I may need to sneak off to the Drummer stream's speakeasy, with Charlie:

Wild Neil @11:35 -- my pessimism knows no bounds, with that stuff. The beauty in people and the desire to not-harm seem to be random mutations in the operating system. So to speak.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:58am Adrian in London:

Thanks for a lovely show; ending with a beautiful song
