A viking ship appears on the horizon, a likeness of Alice Coltrane carved into its bow. Rare birds flock together to sing Francoise Hardy as soul hits. A sunset of blips and bleeps fills the air.

Hey Trouble, scientists have discovered that reef fish 'sing', just like birds do the dawn chorus bit.ly... (The result sounds like a modular synth patch, excitingly)
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

Bonjour les écouteurs, les cédilles, les slackeurs ...
Avatar 9:58am βrian:

Reef fish must have been the inspiration for the didgeridoo.

Happy Mabon!
Avatar 10:11am pierre:

@Brian : that's nice, i'm sure Françoise would be grateful.

@Trouble : I am too ! But yeah, forgetting a cedilla can affect some pronunciation and make weird and unwanted mistakes :)
Avatar 10:17am Kevlicki:

@trouble, the Interference Archive crew is communicating tons of appreciation for a recent mention on air.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am sphere:

um, i do, βrian. didn't know Mac OS installs were THAT risky....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am Trouble:

howdy priscilla!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am listener james from westwood:

The start of this Olsen track made me think it was one of the instrumentals from that Yo La Tengo Sounds of the Sounds of Science album! Both lovely!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Adrian in London:

@James, this is such a lovely album, agreed
  10:47am Brendan:

This song is a beauty. Makes me think of Sunday mornings
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:47am Guido from Cologne:

why do I like the songs from the new angel olsen album more when played on the radio than played on my turntable?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Lewis:

@sphere - not *that* risky but ever since Steve went on the the great beyond, early releases have had a bit of excitement around them... (oh and can I just take this opportunity to express my deeply and heartfelt opinion that iTunes now really sucks and it is time for a replacement. If I didn't have to work for a living I would take that on...)
Avatar 10:51am Sem Chumbo:

Wonderful 2nd set.
  10:51am Brendan:

@Guido i feel that way about songs too. I think its the sense of community , music meant to be shared and i think why radio terrestrial or streamed will always exist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am sphere:

@Lewis - yeah, i've been updating Apple OSes since forever and not a single one has blown up on me yet. new iTunes is ok but it sorely needs a real redesign.
  10:52am βrian:

The iTunes developers forgot the maxim, "Never use an icon that's bigger than your head."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am coelacanth:

greetings Trouble,and Troubled
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:00am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Trouble - The Poughkeepsie Journal has had some S&W discount coupons the last couple of Sundays. I can send them to you at the station if you want them. I'll probably sign up to volunteer there on festival Saturday. It was a lot of fun last year.
  11:01am kevlicki:

ßrian we have a relationship with some of the librarians at the Labadie, it's definitely an influence. We hope to persist as long as them tho Interference is all volunteer run and community supported.
So long as we are relevant we will exist
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:07am Goyim in the AM:

I get to listen to WFMU on Thursday (Euro) afternoons again! Yippee!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Planet Tyler:

I like skittles and the right has always relied on people whose emotions overpower their intellect
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:10am Lewis:

(@trouble - I don't think that your Skittle's metaphor went the way you intended...)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Trouble:

thanks for the offer ken, but i love giving my $$ to those people, they are doing amazing things! sounds fun to volunteer, that's super of you to do
Avatar 11:11am glenn:

vote skittles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:12am Trouble:

uh oh lewis. oops. do you think people will think i support trump and white supremacy?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Lewis:

no, I don't think that is a danger ;-)
  11:15am Peter in SEA:

Oooh, I dig Aaron Wexler's work! Morning Trouble & the Troubled.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Trouble - No problemo. I might leave them out at a local cafe or something in hopes of introducing someone new to the event.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20am Trouble:

good idea, ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Ike:

This isn't limited to the USA. In the Philippines, they elected a member of the elite who claims to be a law-and-order anti-elitist (sound familiar?) who whips up fear about drug pushers & users (though the actual rate of drug use is about the same as anywhere else) and now they have police death squads executing alleged dealers in the street (i.e. whoever the police feel like summarily executing). And that guy keeps getting good poll numbers! Sad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Adrian in London:

Oh Trouble, I've just send you an mp3 of that track I emailed you about the other day. Hope you like it.
Avatar 11:28am Parq:

Was just looking at a link from the Friendship Club page, after following the cute-kids picture from the home page. This isn't the page that the FC linked to; it's another page from the same site. But trust me, you need this.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:30am Trouble:

thank you adrian! per usual i am soooooo behind in my email world. merci
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Trouble:

have you seen this?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Parq - For some reason, “Aloha Snackbar” from that list gave me a laugh. That and "Spirit II: Electric Boogaloo."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:35am Ike:

Was this the birth of sampling in pop music? Did anybody do it before the Silver Apples?
  11:37am Dean:

Does Revolution 9 count? Was contemporary with SA, but isn't precisely sampling.
Avatar 11:37am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Avatar 11:38am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Ike: for pop muisk, would Perrey & Kingsley count, with the tape edits? That was mid 1960s....
Avatar 11:39am Parq:

Ken, what kills me is how many variations there are on "Bombie McBombface"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41am Trouble:

musique concrete is cited as the beginning but i say "jazz"! done live and on records, players picked pieces and looped and integrated those bits into unrelated songs so effortlessly you didn't know it was happening unless you knew the riff
  11:43am Dean:

Yes, but Bach and Handel were doing *that*, too.
  11:44am Brendan:

Mimicry in the bird kingdom is sampling
Avatar 11:45am Jeff:

Nope, I didn't want to learn that you don't like Joni Mitchell.

You may be a bad person.
Avatar 11:45am βrian:

"Georg" was my CB radio handel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Ike:

I was asking specifically about pop music (whatever that is, ha ha), not, say, musique concrete, or jazz, because obviously (well, obviously to me) those were first, but I want to know when this phenomenon crossed over to pop.
  11:46am emily:

Paul used to live with one of the Frank Chickens. no kidding!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Greg from ZONE 5:

Speaking of sampling! "Luck of Lucien" by A Tribe Called Quest…
  11:47am jt:

Hey Trouble, Zadie Smith wrote an essay / short story, for The New Yorker about her dislike of Joni Mitchell and a long car trip where the only music her Bf brought was JM. It's transformative.
Avatar 11:49am kwhitehead:

Great great show Trouble. My Discogs wantlist has grown exponentially in the last three hours.
Avatar 11:50am βrian:

@jt: yes, that was a good article. And I completely identified with the shock people manifested when she mentioned she didn't like her. I just couldn't fathom how that might work.
Avatar 11:50am Sem Chumbo:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:52am Trouble:

@jeff: it's true. i may be a bad person.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am Trouble:

@jt: i love zadie smith, so i must not be all bad...thanks will look that up
Avatar 11:53am Rev. Turnip Druid:

yeh, hence thinking about Perrey & Kingsley, since they spun a mad pop tune. If it's sampling in general, that probably goes back to dinosaur DJs. Which did exist, of course.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53am steveo:

Good to hear you, Trouble. Welcome back!
Avatar 11:53am Bas NL:

I've been background lurk-listening.. Fantastic show Trouble! Thanks!
