Live performance and chat with The Secret Sea

Back in the early 2000s, Israeli born Amit Erez started taking his first steps as a musician, infusing his music with influences from folk-rock favorites like Elliott Smith, The Decemberists and Nick Drake. Two band projects and a solo album later, Erez took over his last band's name as his own, now performing as The Secret Sea. Amit recently relocated to Portland, Oregon and just played his first NYC show. He had an extra night available, so The Secret Sea played live and premiered same new album tracks on Irene's show.

Sauntering by, perchance to miss a fine Roy Harper tune. From Bullinamingvase if memory serves. Large yay. Still, missing it I must now punch self innaface.

Gosh I live in the FMU archives.
Avatar 10:43pm Van in DC:

Today I discovered Venus and the Moon from Samantha's amazing show, via archive. What a terrific track, "Die Slow". Love her show.
Avatar 10:48pm Van in DC:

Thanks to The Secret Sea for that live set.
Avatar 10:49pm Van in DC:

Holy cow, I thought that was Sally Oldfield at first hear!
Avatar 10:51pm Van in DC:

If you played "Water Bearer" by Sally next, not sure you could tell the difference in voice! .... or is it just me.
  10:54pm herb.nyc:

More power to the archives!
Avatar 10:55pm Van in DC:

Okay it's been a few years. I can see the difference but still...judge for yourself:

Avatar 11:12pm Van in DC:

Irene has played Peter Biedermann for many years I think.
Avatar 11:13pm Van in DC:

Not sure I've heard any other FMU person play Peter, actually.
Avatar 11:15pm Jack Scheff:

I see... I do not listen to Irene often enough... may need to fix that...
Avatar 11:16pm Van in DC:

Bestest show on FMU :)
  11:17pm herb.nyc:

I only learned this earlier in year- how did Axl Rose get his name? Hello anagram.
Avatar 11:18pm Van in DC:

I instantly love this
Avatar 11:18pm Jack Scheff:

Heh
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Irene Trudel:

Nope, Noa's name is real! She's been on my show at least once or twice. such a lovely person and songwriter! Nice to be reminded of her connection to Amit/The Secret Sea. Jack, Peter has been on my show many times, who I met through fellow guitarist Ian Smit. Both are Jersey boys, and we've long conversations over the years about all the wonderful, weird music we like in common.
Avatar 11:20pm Van in DC:

So today, the National Mall FINALLY reopens (for the most part) after about 2 years of renovation. I very happily walk to the middle to rejoice. A woman comes up to me: Excuse me, where is the mall? Uh, you're standing on it!! ..... she asks "Well then where are all the shops?!". Seriously. Boggle. Brain fried.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Irene Trudel:

e'fessioux has a Bandcamp page with the tracks for download: e-fessioux.bandcamp.com...
Avatar 11:23pm terribilia:

awesome. thank you!
Avatar 11:25pm Jack Scheff:

interesting... thanks! His music is so open to possibilities
Avatar 11:26pm Van in DC:

I have an FMU shot glass.

And Honey Jack Daniels whiskey.

I'm happy.
Avatar 11:29pm Van in DC:

Oh, hey! Just noticed the date!! Today is exactly SIX years since I stopped cold turkey smoking. Not a single puff in six years. That, after 2.5 packs a day.
Avatar 11:30pm Jack Scheff:

impressive!
Avatar 11:31pm Van in DC:

Aw, thanks :)
Avatar 11:32pm Jack Scheff:

@Irene: that is now on my calendar :)
Avatar 11:33pm Van in DC:

27 years of smoking by the way. I was hard core. And a hairs breadth away from emphysema.
Avatar 11:35pm Van in DC:

When I quit, I could barely breathe. My lungs were at like 18% capacity. Improved now to about 88%. Such a difference.
Avatar 11:38pm terribilia:

that's a lot of cigarettes
  11:38pm Carmichael:

Nick Drake has long been my favorite troubled soul. Beautiful music, tragic life.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38pm Irene Trudel:

Congrats, Van! I used to smoke cigarettes and quit more than 20 years ago. The first week was the hardest. Now I can even stand the smell. I've heard it's the hardest addiction to kick.
Avatar 11:39pm terribilia:

every time i listen to nick drake i feel like i've lost a friend
Avatar 11:39pm Van in DC:

I was going to use all the smoking money saved for a trip to New Zealand as a reward, but instead I gave it all to FMU. :)
Avatar 11:39pm Jack Scheff:

aww!
Avatar 11:39pm Van in DC:

Thanks Irene, yes it is harder than heroin to give up.
  11:40pm herb.nyc:

vg Van. Kiki, of Kiki
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:41pm Irene Trudel:

Wow, that's really generous of you, Van! I always knew you were a superfan of WFMU.
Avatar 11:42pm Van in DC:

Such joy is to be rewarded. Keep it going!!
  11:44pm herb.nyc:

Redo: vg Van. Kiki, of Kiki and Herb, would hold her cigarette and tell us "smoking keeps me (pause) focused". She's a nut!
Avatar 11:46pm Van in DC:

Thanks so much Irene for yet another incredibly wonderful presentation. Crashing now, will catch up on the last 15 minutes as well as the first few missed tomorrow.

Good night all, and everyone treat each other well okay? And no texting and driving.

Thanks again.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49pm Irene Trudel:

Thanks Van, and everybody tuning in tonight. Let's do it again next Tuesday, 'kay?
  11:49pm Carmichael:

John Waters used to do an anti smoking bit as a theater trailer, way back in the day. The entire time, he would give off the vibe of "although I don't see what the big deal is ..."
  11:52pm herb.nyc:

Oh John Waters...I'm reading his CARSICK now
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Irene Trudel:

John Waters is so classy. In a smarmy way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55pm coelacanth:

Carmichael i remember that ad (probably from "polyester", with "odorama"!) and thinking he probably has a lit ciggie in his fingers, out of view!
  11:55pm P-90:

Or smatmy, in a very classy way. Same thing, I guess.
Thanks, Irene!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:56pm coelacanth:

wow, deep left banke!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:57pm Irene Trudel:

I saw Polyester in a theater with the scratch & sniff card. I had to hold my hands outside the car window on the way home, they smelled so bad afterward (and it didn't wash off easily)!
  11:58pm Carmichael:

Daddy loves his Left Banke.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:59pm coelacanth:

haha! i remember that! we all couldn't wait to wash our hands.
...i wish i'd saved that card though.
  11:59pm phat:

thank you for that Left Banke. That is one of my absolute favorite records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am coelacanth:

Thanks Irene.

ciao
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Irene Trudel:

no, coelacanth, I don't. ;D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:00am Irene Trudel:

G'nite all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:01am coelacanth:

haha!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:02am coelacanth:

(hermetically sealed?)
Avatar 12:03am Jack Scheff:

night!
Avatar 9:17am Sean in Bristol UK:

Thanks for a great show, Irene and thank you to The Secret Sea for the live set
Avatar 3:08pm Van in DC:

Yep, thanks again Irene! I found one of your shows from 2011 that I inexplicably missed, apparently, with a live Peter Biedermann, so I thought hmmm, I'll have to revisit that show in the next couple of days to do a prep for next week. :)
