This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Get your barges ready, we're headed for the Nile
  6:57pm Ed:

I'm ready Flash! Good evening
Avatar 6:58pm Flash Strap:

Evening, Ed!
Avatar 6:58pm ndbob:

evening Evan, Ed, everyone!
Avatar 6:59pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:04pm Flash Strap:

echoes on this track are outstanding
Avatar 7:05pm Flash Strap:

Can this track really have been composed by the same guy who wrote "Juicyfruit"?
Avatar 7:07pm hyde:

Avatar 7:07pm Flash Strap:

Explorer Hyde! Warm welcome!
Avatar 7:09pm ndbob:

Hello Hyde!
Avatar 7:11pm hyde:

this musical theme seems appropriate to me, as this week i discovered that there was an (undoubtedly true) internet conspiracy theory that President Obama is a clone of the Egyptian pharaoh Akhenaten!

(hiya, ndbob!)
Avatar 7:13pm hyde:

in fact, i am now starting to suspect that this radio show may also be involved in this conspiracy
Avatar 7:13pm Flash Strap:

Well if that don't beat all! There's a conspiracy theory I can see Sun Ra getting down with, albeit from a totally opposite perspective
Avatar 7:14pm Little Danny:

Hi all! So stoked to be listening from the very start this week
Avatar 7:14pm geezerette:

Evening Evan!
I've packed Deet & mint tea! Just don't make cocktails from them.
Avatar 7:14pm Flash Strap:

Obama would look really really smooth in a Afro-futurist Egyptomaniacal headdress and matching robe. The president i voted for but didn't get
Avatar 7:15pm geezerette:

Hi Danny!
Avatar 7:15pm Flash Strap:

Danny and Geezerette! Hello and welcome friends, explorers, comrades
Avatar 7:15pm Little Danny:

I am already in love with this show concept
Avatar 7:16pm Little Danny:

Hey Geez!
Avatar 7:16pm hyde:

@Flash if you image search "obama is akhenaten" you'll see just what you're missing!
Avatar 7:17pm hyde:

@geezerette rats. there goes my twist on the manhattan using diethyltoluamide instead of vermouth
Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

hahaha that is a fun google search
Avatar 7:20pm Flash Strap:

this here is one of my very favorite recordings, ever, ever
Avatar 7:21pm hyde:

you say that about all the recordings
Avatar 7:21pm geezerette:

Sorry hyde.. :)

Tonight we are all brand Nubians!
Avatar 7:21pm hyde:

(which is not to say it isn't amazing! i don't know this Cohran at all)
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

this recording is special i swear
Avatar 7:22pm Flash Strap:

i never meant it with all those other recordings
Avatar 7:23pm Flash Strap:

seriously this was recorded live in 1993 at the chicago planetarium in memoriam for Sun Ra, who had just died, and it is probably my favorite Cohran album
Avatar 7:27pm Little Danny:

Oh yes, African Skies is special. *All* of Cohran's recordings over the decades hold up
Avatar 7:27pm hyde:

the harp part is fantastic
Avatar 7:29pm geezerette:

"New" artist to me too and this is beautiful.
Avatar 7:37pm hyde:

from the For Future Reference Dept: cool video of Josèfe Marie Verna, the harpist on that Cohran track doing a solo version of what sounds on a brief listen to me like what she is playing on White Nile, though here it's called "Variations Pastorales sur un Vieu Noël (Thème Improvisations)" www.youtube.com...
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

i will check that out Hyde, sounds amazing
Avatar 7:40pm Flash Strap:

I should have mentioned that Ragab is the drummer, and also that these recordings were done in Heliopolis
Avatar 7:42pm hyde:

there was always little doubt there would be at least some Salah Raghab tonite! love that guy's records.
Avatar 7:43pm Flash Strap:

he's so damn good it's crazy
Avatar 7:45pm geezerette:

Whoa, klezmer finish by Bechet!
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

I know, with a real New Orleans twist! What an exotic cocktail
Avatar 7:46pm Flash Strap:

this is really one of Ellington's more wonderful, strange earlier recordings
Avatar 7:48pm geezerette:

Cross pollination is a great thing.
Avatar 7:49pm geezerette:

Imaginations want / need to travel!
Avatar 7:57pm Flash Strap:

This one is pretty different from LL Smith's take... certainly less succinct.
Avatar 7:57pm ndbob:

excellent first hour Evan - bye for now everyone!
Avatar 7:58pm Flash Strap:

Bye Bob, thanks for being with us
Avatar 8:00pm hyde:

if anyone is interested in that Michael White "Spirit Dance" LP, there's a live link in 320 or flac here (alsp has his Pneuma Lp). password is vibes. flabbergasted-vibes.org...
Avatar 8:01pm geezerette:

bye ndbob!
Avatar 8:01pm Flash Strap:

I've had this around for a little while, not too long really, and to be honest this is the first time I've given it a real listen. So we're in this thing together, explorers.
Avatar 8:01pm hyde:

g'night, ndb!
Avatar 8:02pm Flash Strap:

VERY wise tip from Hyde. Flabbergasted Vibes is 100% gold, btw
Avatar 8:06pm Flash Strap:

holy moly this is wild
Avatar 8:07pm geezerette:

Hyde and Evan, thanks for tips!
Avatar 8:08pm Flash Strap:

speaking of tips, here's this one: surfingtheodyssey.blogspot.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:13pm coelacanth:

greetings Evan and Explorers
Avatar 8:14pm Flash Strap:

Hi C! Great to have you with us
Avatar 8:15pm Little Danny:

Hey Coel!
And thx for that link, flash
Avatar 8:15pm hyde:

yay, it's coelacanth!
Avatar 8:16pm geezerette:

Howdy coel!
Avatar 8:16pm Flash Strap:

My pleasure, LD
Avatar 8:19pm geezerette:

Klezmer Bellydancing Dervishes! Wild party.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:22pm coelacanth:

howdy all! i feel like i just got home!
Avatar 8:24pm Little Danny:

YES! Les Baxter is on that continuum
Avatar 8:25pm geezerette:

coel, are you all moved in?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:28pm coelacanth:

g...well, i'm all moved out!
Avatar 8:29pm hyde:

going back a bit, but holy crap. the musicians on that Mtume LP! whoa.
Avatar 8:31pm Flash Strap:

I know, what a lineup!
Avatar 8:34pm Flash Strap:

what continuum was that LD? I'm blanking on what I may have said. Musicians with which Ra felt a great affinity?
Avatar 8:37pm geezerette:

coel, halfway there then! :)
Avatar 8:37pm geezerette:

I love this album!
Avatar 8:39pm Flash Strap:

ME TOO, G! Alice is second to none in my book

this whole set is very Nile themed
Avatar 8:42pm hyde:

i think that Alice Coltrane really does not get nearly enough credit for the late 60's/early 70's run of Huntington Ashram Monastery /Ptah, the El Daoud/Journey in Satchidananda /Universal Consciousness LP's on Impulse. that is a serious 4 LP stretch of greatness.
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

Journey in Satchidananda is a top ten LP for me.

And that run of greatness hardly ends there! although it does shift gears a bit
Avatar 8:44pm Flash Strap:

I totally agree, is my point, Hyde
Avatar 8:49pm Little Danny:

@flash: oh shit, I think I might have been mistaking your Duke Ellington comparison to Les Baxter rather than Sun Ra.
Avatar 8:50pm hyde:

heh. and i agree the Alice Coltrane greatness doesn't end there! but to me, those particular 4 albums in a run is like a contemporaneous jazz/world music version of the Beggar's Banquet-Let It Bleed-Sticky Fingers-Exile on Main Street Stones run. I just wish she got as much recognition for it.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

I wonder if I misspoke! I am a little out of it... Anyway, Ra loved Les, Les loved Duke, and Duke's exoticism was VERY comparable to the aims of Afrocentrism, in that it sought to forge new kinds of black identity... so there's a very tempting subject, triangulating those three
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:53pm coelacanth:

g@8:37 -Thanks for asking. the fact is, i'm all moved in; but i'm suspending unpacking and getting internet service... if the landlord hasn't bought 5 storm windows by october, i'm moving again!
(which is a little worse than any nightmares i'm likely to have)
Avatar 8:54pm Flash Strap:

I stand with you on that Hyde. It really is a stunning run, and she's still (tho improvements have been made of late) mostly discussed in terms relative to her husband or her collaborators
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:54pm coelacanth:

that track was sublime
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

That sounds like Hassle City, Coelacanth! Hope it settles right for you
Avatar 8:58pm Flash Strap:

Glad I could work some Eddie Harris into this one
Avatar 8:59pm geezerette:

Evan & Hyde, yes,I love Journey in Satchidananda too. I listened to Alice Coltrane a lot at one point.
The Coltranes were deeply spiritual, it's all in the music. I feel so at peace and energized when I play those records.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm coelacanth:

Thanks Flash. i really like this new apartment, but it's more drafty than a tent. it'll end up costing 3-4 hundred dollars/mo for heat the way it is.
-i'm a damn fool for not realizing this right away.
Avatar 9:02pm northguineahills:

imagined geographies, the Nile in Meso-America....
Avatar 9:02pm geezerette:

Gorgeous set. :)
Avatar 9:10pm geezerette:

coel, definitely storm windows! Maybe you should get a space heater
for yourself, even a small one. Makes total sense not to unpack.
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

That sucks, C. I feel your pain

NGH, welcome brother

Thanks, G!
Avatar 9:17pm Flash Strap:

Charlie Haden on bass, so good
Avatar 9:18pm geezerette:

& Love for Pharoah Sanders, Yusef Lateef...on and on.
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

Vishnu Wood, of Randy Weston's projects, on Oud, so good
Avatar 9:19pm Flash Strap:

More Pharoah comin' up, Geezerette! Somehow, no Yusef or Don Cherry tonight
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19pm coelacanth:

g - i don't relay this to be bellyaching, but because i think it's kind of funny...in my bedroom there was a window open that i assumed had a screen down and a few nights ago when it got cooler i went to put the window down and noticed there is no screen. it's one of the ones that does have a storm, and it was down!
- it leaks that much that i thought it was open!
...but that i don't mind fixing myself. it just needs some putty & maybe glue.
Avatar 9:22pm hyde:

@c oof. good to get on that before winter!
Avatar 9:24pm Hams:

pharoah & i share the same birthday. i got to see him a few years ago at the bluenote. yes.
Avatar 9:24pm geezerette:

coel, what hyde said!
It is funny story though, kind of Buster Keatonish. :D
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

Sonny Sharrock on guitar! OOOOOOOOH MY GOOOOOOOD
Avatar 9:25pm Flash Strap:

Damn Hams. Damn
Avatar 9:25pm Hams:

sharrock! was just thinking that! holy cow.
Avatar 9:26pm Flash Strap:

also, hello Hams
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm coelacanth:

ha! i could use a Buster Keaton movie about now!
Avatar 9:27pm Hams:

hellos! just tuning in.
Avatar 9:30pm Flash Strap:

Roger Blank, on drums here, is an Arkestra member! SUN RA IS ALL AND EVERYWHERE
Avatar 9:30pm hyde:

@c there was some good keaton on tcm last week i have One Week on the DVR to watch. (hello to geezerette, silent film fan)
Avatar 9:33pm Flash Strap:

Post-silent (just), but I watched a Garbo Speaks! picture the other day. Mata Hari. It was ok, not amazing. I expected to like it more
Avatar 9:34pm Flash Strap:

I almost didn't play this tonight, as I've heard it a million times and sort of thought you all would have too, but I am now remembering just how incredible it is
Avatar 9:34pm northguineahills:

I was just going through a history of philosophy podcasts, and finally got to the Islamist traditions, where Tauhid in a philosophical context was discussed, and I automatically had the Pharoah album playing in my head (didn't even have to turn on any music!) I love this album!
Avatar 9:34pm hyde:

@Flash hmm, never have seen that one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:38pm coelacanth:

(taking notes!) -i'm not sure i even know a Buster Keaton movie by name, or have seen one in its entirety...but i know some scenes and the basic vibe, i think.

and yes, Flash, but incredible enough for many listenings!
Avatar 9:38pm hyde:

Tauhid by Pharoah Sanders is great, tho i admit the record of his that i am most wedded to is Karma. that's the one i found when i was in high school.
Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

Karma is amazing as well
Avatar 9:40pm Flash Strap:

GOD that transition is fiercely regal!
Avatar 9:42pm Flash Strap:

this track is out of control
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm coelacanth:

this PROGRAM is out of control, sir!
Avatar 9:49pm Flash Strap:

this LP has one of my favorite Blue Note covers ever: img.discogs.com...
Avatar 9:49pm geezerette:

(hiya hyde)
Evan, see Flesh and the Devil, A Woman of Affairs, Queen Christina, and then Ninotchka. Garbo and John Gilbert first three, Melvyn Douglas the last one. Those films are magic.

Fabulous show Evan!!!
Avatar 9:50pm northguineahills:

If I don't get back to the comments board, thanks Flash, and have a great night everyone!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm coelacanth:

that cover's pretty badass.
Avatar 9:50pm Flash Strap:

Thanks for the tip, G. I'd love to get a better sense for the much-rhapsodized glory of Garbo
Avatar 9:50pm geezerette:

Love that album cover!
Avatar 9:51pm Flash Strap:

SO badass, but then, so is Art Blakey

You have a great night too NGH
