It's great. I think in the age of digital tuners and streaming, it's going the way of tape flutter & NTSC video static. I love it, myself.

It's great. How do you find things on Bandcamp, Kurt? Tag searches? Or do you know the labels? (I don't, except maybe a couple)
Avatar 4:00pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

i don't really search bandcamp, it's just stuff i get alerted to by publicists or friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:04pm
Rich in Washington:

They don't make it easy to search stuff out on Bandcamp. I think they want to promote all their clients equally badly.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:14pm
Gary:

Ha, that's funny, Rich. I find tags can be helpful if I'm looking for certain things (e.g., lo-fi, glitch, outsider, Russia, France, etc.), but I would love some sort of way to flip through images that were divvied up into certain genres or categories of some kind. I feel like it's difficult to have a happy accidental find there, it seems to be more about knowing what you're looking for
  4:18pm
Dean:

If you use Bandcamp to search for "kurt gottshcalk" you'll retrieve four hits. If you use Google to search for

"kurt gottschalk" site:bandcamp.com

...you'll retrieve three pages of hits, all at bandcamp.com. Includes records for which KG designed cover, etc.

A great cover of a terrific Randy Newman song.

Parq, I've never heard Randy Newman sing it either, and I like his work very much.
Avatar 6:16pm
geezerette:

nice, Kurt!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:25pm
Parq:

Geez, it was on his Little Criminals album and got completely overshadowed because that was the album that had "Short People". It's the greatest song I know about loathing for a home town.
Avatar 6:29pm
geezerette:

Parq, how funny, totally missed it!

X's song about L.A. isn't full of affection either. :)
  6:30pm
Dean:

Yes, but Randy Newman "love[s] L.A.!"
Avatar 6:31pm
geezerette:

ha ha, forgot that !
  6:36pm
Dean:

And then, of course, there's the cheesy NYC tribute popularized by Sinatra. We native West Coast bastards used to change the lyrics to a puerile, "If I can take it there I'll take it anywhere..."
Avatar 6:37pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

sinatra, who loved new york but never even looked back at his hometown, hoboken.

To be fair, "Hoboken, Hoboken" just doesn't have the same ring to it.

Good one about D.C.; "Bourgeois Blues". Leadbelly.
Avatar 6:45pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

bourgeois blues is an amazing song
Avatar 6:46pm
geezerette:

Dean, yeah the rivalry was intense. Now N.Y. & L.A. are almost like
differently themed rooms in the same hotel.

This two tone stuff is making me very nostalgic!
Avatar 6:47pm
geezerette:

Kurt, yes! Great lyrics. Nothing's changed!
Avatar 6:48pm
geezerette:

That Specials album is a gem.
  6:50pm
Dean:

geezerette, and the hotel includes many such themed rooms as more big (and not-so-big) cities opt to caricature themselves.

I was tepid about the ska revival at the time. It was hard for me to come down from punk and music of the fledgling industrial scene. I remember receiving a copy of The Specials' second album to review. Kept it a few months, then gave it up. Wouldn't mind hearing it again now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Mike East:

Interesting that you played a cut off the Specials LP followed by an MP3 off the same record...didn't want to flip the rekkid?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:52pm
Mike East:

great show, btw...I really needed this after today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:54pm
Parq:

This isn't the song "Madness". But it is one of my fave songs from the album.
Avatar 6:55pm
Kurt Gottschalk:

flipping records takes too long!
and yeah, parq, i think the record is mislabeled.
  6:55pm
Dean:

Weird. This morning the local college station played a bunch of Madness, Specials, English Beat, and Prince Buster. Did a memo go out? Also heard a lounge-y cover version of "Madness" recently.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 6:56pm
Parq:

The lines "Broke it off when she got shirty -- she was 12 and he was 30" just kill me. I see this is the tail end of a whole long set, most of which I missed. Oh well.
Avatar 6:58pm
geezerette:

Dean, yes, the deadly sameness. I blame Dwell for not understanding Case Study houses.

Know what you mean, still I think that's a very good album. You might like it now.
