I had heard talking heads wanted to emulate Hot Chocolate. Now I think it's Bohannon just as much. And this is --what, 6 years before Tom Tom Club?

Avatar 9:24am Polyus:

Isn't that Big Black in the movie When We Were Kings, baked out of his gourd? I can't find the scene online.

Good Morning Freeform Nation of the Station!

The X-Files is a show....With music by Mark Snow...
Avatar 9:41am Utopiast:

Good morning. Just tuned in and saw that you played a Leonard Nimoy tune earlier. Coincidentally, I just finished watching the new documentary produced by his son. For project supporters with a link (and others???), it can be seen on Vimeo. Comprehensive and fair look at the him the person and Spock the character.

Morning Marty and co.

What's next? Bush Tetras or Scissor Sisters? (Now that I mention 'em, I won't hear 'em. I know. I'm just dipping into a parallel world in my head. Right now this world is perfect.)

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:14am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, gang!
Got that sweet, sweet Titus Andronicus hangover.
Avatar 10:15am this guy:

I would say they both can go hand and hand. but generally, rocksteady is a taste slower with slightly more going on with percussion. so therefore, most of this has been rocksteady i would venture. all great tho
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Passaic River Blues:

My word, this Ethiopian ditty is gorgeous.
Avatar 10:18am Cecile:

ITA and it fits my mood these days.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:22am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Marty and Martinis. Wow, there's another exciting hoarding program on the Terrible Life Choices network just now!
Avatar 10:25am pierre:

The Blues Busters is just a pure delight for my ears.
  10:25am nickrhombi:

@thisguy... thanks. i have a hard time identifying and dont know what the criteria are. - my baseline is 'seacruise.' the beat has a certain 'push' a locomotion; oont-h-ahta, oont-h-ahta... that groove, at that tempo - and under - interests me. - is the slower stuff all calypso derivative? - thank you.
Avatar 10:26am Cecile:

calyspso and New Orleans r'n'b taken sideways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Ken From Hyde Park:

RIP, Prince Buster.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am Passaic River Blues:

That's pretty apt, Cecile.
Avatar 10:29am spidermank:

..Martinis.. hahah nice one Ken From Hyde Park, love it. Thanks for shapin my day in a good way Marty. Gotta go,will catch this archives side , have a great day everyone.
Avatar 10:29am Cecile:

OK blame the victim Ann Peebles.
I love her.
Avatar 10:29am Cheri Pi:

Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo :'(
Avatar 10:30am pierre:

what Cheri Pi ?
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

I'm sorry Pi. We missed you yesterday afternoon.
Avatar 10:31am Cecile:

between you, me and the tree, I prefer Ann Peebles and Otis Clay to 99% of what Al Green did on Hi.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Greg from ZONE 5:

Ska is the one that sounds like the Jamaican version of "Sea Cruise"…uptempo and fun. Rocksteady slowed it down and lost the horns. I heard that that happened because the summer of 66 was so hot in Jamaica that everybody—the musicians and the dancers—slowed down. No foolin'!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:32am Devin B.:

@GfZ5: I've heard that story too
Avatar 10:32am Whooda:

Nice collection of album covers DJ Marty McSorley.
  10:33am nickrhombi:

@cecile, thanks... i am really unfamiliar with the terminology. i tend to like the older, slower records...and i sense that maybe some of these categories are pretty elastic... 'ska' for example seems to have a broad margin, but generally faster tempo it seems...
Avatar 10:33am pierre:

and they all more or less come from a mix between mento, calypso, and soul music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am Greg from ZONE 5:

@Devin: So cool, right? I love the idea of the weather creating music.
  10:34am nickrhombi:

@greg, thanks! great stuff!
Avatar 10:34am Cecile:

Just call it all bluebeat, and you're good.
Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

You know the weather in Scandinavia created black metal. And probably the heat in Florida created death metal.
  10:35am JtotheK:

Cool Pharcyde remix.
  10:36am nickrhombi:

Avatar 10:36am Cecile:

Is this a Dilla remix?
Avatar 10:37am Cecile:

Skafinger, he's the man with the reggae touch.
  10:38am JtotheK:

@Cecile - Dilla did a remix of She Said, but it's not this version. I think the Dilla remix is on 45...or maybe only 12". I know there's at least one Pharcyde 45, anyway.
Avatar 10:38am Cheri Pi:

Prince Buster :( Thanks @Pierre, I was sick yesterday and couldn't listen. I feel so bad but I will catch up in the archive.
Avatar 10:39am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:40am Greg from ZONE 5:

My downstairs neighbor in Bloomfield played congas with Pucho. He was the fucking coolest neighbor ever.
Avatar 10:42am Cheri Pi:

CECILE! t'anks
Avatar 10:43am Cecile:

I will bet, Greg.

This is amazing.
Avatar 10:43am PKNY:

That might be the illest track listing on a steel drum record ever. This version of "World is a Ghetto" is slow burning heat!
Avatar 10:47am Whooda:

Nice steel transition DJ Marty McSorley! This is the first $0.50 song I've heard. Thanks.
  10:48am nickrhombi:

snoop getting the pimp hand heavy...
Avatar 10:49am Cecile:

Snoop always steals the show.
Avatar 10:52am Cecile:

I wonder how many no-wave bands formed after this stuff was reissued in '97?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am common:

nice coming in on liquid liquid . hello all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:53am Goatpuncher:

@Whooda, that dunce needs guests to prop him up and a producer to provide good beats for him, otherwise he's got nothing. 50 is dumber than a post.
  10:53am Brendan:

Hello. Nice vibe(s) goin on MM. This is tight.
Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

yes, dumb enough to get Power renewed for three more seasons.
Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

he's a good assembler of talent.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Goatpuncher:

That's what they said about W.
Avatar 10:57am Cecile:

a lot fewer innocent lives will be lost by Power being on TV.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58am Goatpuncher:

That's true. But just about anything could get renewed for 3 seasons on Starz. You could do a sitcom about a talking cat and get renewed. It's Starz!
Avatar 10:59am Cecile:

no, he got three more full seasons after season 2. That's even impressive for Starz.
Avatar 11:07am cee:

love that thai funk
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Guido from Cologne:

King Sunny!
  11:31am Brendan:

A friend turned me on to Sunny in the early 80s . Gboro Miro I think...Definitely an war opener.
Avatar 11:32am Cecile:

I saw him live, it was amazing. Lots of dollars pressed on Sunny's forehead that night.
  11:32am Brendan:

  11:33am Brendan:

I actually hold it against Marty that while listening to his show I often have thoughts like, "Man, I gotta get me some Pigbag."

Mr Adam Ant!

This is great.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Ken From Hyde Park:
