Always exciting when I can actually listen live instead of via the archive, for some reason!
Avatar 12:12am

Nah...trying a diff. approach tonight ...so dark, so cold, so sober
Avatar 12:13am

@Listener Howard in Portland This show is an of-the-moment action, if I may be so bold. I always, always encourage bands to play LIVE for that very reason. ...
  12:15am
Dean:

Bands *always* play live. Trouble is, sometimes we listen dead.

Holy hell, I'll bet Vaarherre are a real mindfuck live.
  12:28am
hola-soymilk:

No not literally!!!
Avatar 12:31am

@JayD I'm not sure Vaarherre ever played a show, maybe. That tape is on cocainacopia, not sure but all those releases/bands are pretty out there....

I broke my "never answer the phone" rule, and I deeply regret it. There is no one who calls who is ever a) interested in this program, specifically, and b) is not a tedious alcoholic, or C) making a fucking request ... Message board people, the phones are for call-in shows!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:49am

You tell 'em, Wm. Berger!

Sorry Wm., I thought I was calling JM in the AM. I get the programs confused sometimes.

One of these days, that call will be an emergency that only you can help with. And that person will die.

You should totally post your mobile so drunk people won't have to call the station!

Right. Phones don't ask questions. Why should we answer them?

Hey William, everybody! Totally spaced on the fact that it's Tues night/Wed morning, and I was like Hm. Let's see what's on FMU tonight... jackpot!
Avatar 1:19am

@JayD: You'd have to try awful hard to do so. Sloppy, pushy, arrogant drunks press all my buttons. That's why I don't hang in bars too often. #nyclife ;)
Avatar 1:23am
Wm.:

@cory: Dragon Warrior? music's good eh? My videogame music selections were pretty random, just based on what I had liked & acquired over the years; I'm far from expert, esp. seeing as I don't really play the games....

@Wm: if you have the time check it out

Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am

nini, hail satan?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:36am
mariano:

Even though each game has a soundtrack (at least I think they all do), the GTA games have always had a crazy selection of all different genres of music on their radio stations, with guest DJs like Iggy Pop, Keith Morris, Lee Scratch Perry, fuckin' Kenny Loggins of all people. Lots more. Have a good night, @cory!

Ha! I went to school in Lawrence KS. Had a few friends that were extras in that film. Gotta go check out that bandcamp link....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:49am

What film was that?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50am
mariano:

I've heard Lawrence is really cool.
  1:51am
rw:

Oh, the film was called "The Day After". I think it ran on TV. Maybe it was a multi-episode thing. Probably around 1982 or 1983.
Avatar 1:52am

Isn't Lawrence where Burroughs lived? The geographic center of N. America?

I've been on the lookout for "The Day After" for awhile.

Dug the Street Sects.
  1:55am
rw:

Wm. Burroughs was living there when I was in school. He'd do a reading every once in a while. There were people who'd figure out which days he'd go to the grocery store so they could follow him around and see what he would buy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:56am
mariano:

Whoa, looked up Stull, this is from the Wiki article: The Stull Cemetery has gained a dubious reputation due to urban legends involving Satan, the occult, and a purported "gateway to Hell".
  1:56am
rw:

I have a Christian Death story too but maybe another time...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:02am
mariano:

Oh no, tell us @rw! When I was 18 I had an olive green trench coat I wrote Christian Death on the back of in calligraphy with enamel and regular markers, that's gotta count for something!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:10am

A woman who must've been close to 80 once tried to pick me up at Time Warner Center at Columbus Circle. I was 38, 39 at the time. Couldn't believe it!
  2:11am
rw:

mariano, my story's not much better than yours. I was about 19 and sneaked into Al's Bar stoned on marijuana with a fake ID to see Christian Death and 45 Grave on Halloween weekend wearing a little girl's Girl Scout uniform.
  2:13am
rw:

mariano, I mean not much better than the jacket story. I like the one about Columbus Circle! You weren't tempted, were you?
Avatar 2:14am
Wm.:

@rw, that's a beautiful story, no shame
  2:16am
rw:

Yeah, I was the only one dressed like that. Everybody else in costume was either a dead priest or dead nun with teased up hair.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18am
mariano:

Hah! That's great, rw! What a double bill, and sounds like you did it the perfect way! With the old lady, at first I thought she was asking for directions, and she asked if I was waiting on someone, I said yeah, getting more leery. "A *lady* friend?" she asked, and like an idiot I said no. Then she invited me back to her place. My mind was racing for a way to say no politely, and figured that if I said my girlfriend wouldn't approve, she could say it would be our secret or something, and I wanted a solid OUT! So I said "I don't think my boyfriend would approve." and she nodded in understanding and moved on. Whew! The other reply I came up with was too mean: "Where were you 60 years ago when I needed you?"
  2:18am
Randy Savage:

The 15 year old in me appreciates this type of music. At least it doesn't register 11 on the Cookie Monster Scale. Never go full Cookie Monster.
  2:23am

mariano, good thinking. I wonder how often it worked for her. It's a big world, you know.

Hey, I wish her all the luck in the world, good for her for going for it. But we're talking like support hose and adult diapers old, not some stylish Helen Mirren. Though I guess there are people who are into that sort of thing.
