  12:26pm Polyus:

Death is a Mullimann? What does that mean?
  12:30pm Listener142985:

accd'g to Babylon free online translator, ''mullimann'' means ''waste iman.'' Helpful, jah?
Avatar 12:32pm Rev. Turnip Druid:

  12:36pm Polyus:

Ah, that makes sense then. I couldn't find a translation.
  12:36pm Listener142985:

'Mullimann' could be an allusion to this line of poetry: "der Tod ist ein Meister aus Deutschland" ("Death is a master from Germany)." Greater Teutonic minds will have to supply actual meaning.
  12:40pm Polyus:

Hmm, I wonder if that's what Einstruzende Neubauten were also referencing with Der Todt ist ein Dandy?
Avatar 12:43pm pierre:

that's good !
  12:45pm Listener142985:

It means death is a ''refuse collector'' says Google Translate. Now where's my copy of ''3,000 Years of German Humor''?

Hey Liz, everyone -- looks like I've wandered into an interesting discussion!
  1:29pm Mike VL:

Hey Liz! Great R. Stevie track.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:32pm Liz Berg:

Hi Mariano! Mike VL! Pierre! Mayor! Good to have you all in the house!
  1:37pm pierre:

Listening to this make me want to see them live.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:39pm Passaic River Blues:

You're killing it this set, Liz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:40pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, Liz and gang. Happily, still early for today's guest. What's this I hear about an annual fund-raiser for the Free Music Archive?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:41pm mariano:

"Death is a garbageman" sounds very German, sounds like something Werner Herzog would say. Hi Ken!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:43pm Liz Berg:

Got a haircut last night and it's a wee bit on the short side... which means there's a lot swirling on my head like the bands of a tropical depression.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:46pm mariano:

Well, at least it's not a hurricane...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:47pm Ken From Hyde Park:

Hi, mariano. How's it going? It's good to have a fresh haircut right before a heat wave, anyway.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:50pm mariano:

I've got Kojak head. My mom's Vietnamese manicurist, when she saw a picture of me, told my mom "Your son combs his hair like Buddha!"
  1:50pm Polyus:

Kinda hoping the popularity of Stranger Things makes the buzz cut for women cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:51pm Liz Berg:

I believe there will be a hurricane on my head when the humidity rises, ha! The Free Music Archive is indeed holding a fundraiser right now (great new tee, btw):
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm Liz Berg:

The buddha 'do is a classic!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:55pm mariano:

I've always loved the girl punk hairdo that's a buzz cut with one long lock over the face, especially dyed blue-black. A hurricane for hair, though: that could work, like a storm goddess or something along those lines.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:57pm mariano:

Yeah, well, I've got the Buddha waistline to go with it!
  2:03pm rf:

YAY Kaz! Thanks
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:08pm Michael 98145:

thanks for the FMA reminder, DJ Liz
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:18pm mariano:

They're really good, wow! Always amazed at the sound quality of FMU live sets, hats off to Mario Santana! It's interesting too, the Middle Eastern influence in surf rock (I believe Mirblouk is an Iranian name): Dick Dale is Lebanese, and "Misirlou" is basically an old Lebanese song with a rock beat. Can definitely hear it in the surfier-sounding guitar work here.
  2:19pm Chucktown Dan:

Sounds awesome !
  2:20pm el BO-bO:

These guys sound great.
  2:21pm Rory:

This is good shit!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Summer and Michael:

Davis, CA in the house - nice! Great show through n through, Liz!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Liz Berg:

Good ear, Mariano! Kaz is indeed Iranian-American. "Misirlou" is a funny song that a lot of middle eastern countries have claimed as their own (my Armenian peeps being no exception):
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:29pm mariano:

Oh wow, didn't know about the Armenian connection, but it doesn't surprise me, with the Armenian population of a lot of ME countries -- I appreciate the education! The version I've heard, linked from an article on Dick Dale from a few years back, is this one (not to interrupt Kaz or you of course, please save the link!): www.youtube.com..., but it looks like there are even Greek versions -- might be a contentious thing, like Turkish coffee vs Greek coffee!
Avatar 2:36pm Opal:

Awesome show, Liz. Just transplanted to Davis from NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:38pm Liz Berg:

Have a blast in Davis, Opal! Be sure to check out KDVS, too!
Avatar 2:41pm Opal:

I am very excited to check them out in person! I have been enjoying what I've been hearing on KDVS. A new Sacto freeform station is brewing, too, KUTZ FM. I met a girl wearing a WFMU shirt at a KUTZ fund raiser event. That made me happy.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm mariano:

They need to go to Sunset Park, Brooklyn: really Mexican neighborhood.
  2:44pm el BO-bO:

Mexican burritos in Marina del Rey are awesome.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:44pm Michael 98145:

welcome to the left coast, Opal
Avatar 2:46pm oddyoddyoddy:

Hey Opal, glad to have a transplanted supporter of Freeform radio.
Avatar 2:47pm Jeff:

@mariano: the coffee thing is easily worked out - the assigned nationality for a particular cup of the exact same coffee depends on whether the exact same little brewing vessel was called an ibrik, a briki, a džezva, a ѓезве, or a jazva while the coffee was being made.
Avatar 2:51pm Opal:

@Michael 98145 @oddyoddyoddy Thanks for your welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Liz Berg:

Cool to learn there's another freeform station popping up in Sacto, Opal!
  2:52pm kagi:

Labour is different from labor, though.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:52pm Michael 98145:

( i think Labor Day has devolved to Human Resource Day :(
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm mariano:

@Jeff: I knew ibrik, but didn't know any of the variants, thanks! I'm guessing the last three are Slavic but of Turkish origin? Or is the last one Turkish? Sorry, I really geek out on this sort of thing...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Ken From Hyde Park:

The Canadian Labour Day story checks out: www.statutoryholidays.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm mariano:

Statutory Holidays sounds like a very questionable naughty movie...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm mariano:

Wait, ibrik is Turkish... right? Ugh, back to square one...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:56pm owenowenowenowenowen:

So great to hear all these Davis dawgs on WFMU. Also psyched for KUTZ!
