Open F# tuning: F#A#C#F#A#F#
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Goyim in the AM:

Curtis' tuning = "black keys" tuning -- he learned it tuning to the black keys on his mother's piano.
Avatar 11:50am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

So he tuned up a whole step & a half, & 'open' (makes a chord w/out fingering). An under-credited influence on Hendrix's pretty Soul~Gospel side...
  11:51am P-90:

The "black keys/piano" description is a little misleading without the specifics of what he did. And yes, it was more or less the tuning he settled on and used throughout his career:
"Two significant characteristics distinguish Curtis Mayfield's sound. First, he taught himself how to play guitar, tuning it to the black keys of the piano, thus giving him an open F-sharp tuning F# A# C# F# A# F# that he used throughout his career. Second, he primarily sang in falsetto register, adding another flavor to his music. This was not unique in itself, but most singers sing primarily in the modal register."
  11:55am Cooh John:

Tough neighborhood where love is like a bullet and the trash man has all the good memories.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:55am Goyim in the AM:

Only misleading if you think like a pianist and assume you have to start from C#.

Thanks for Lydia.
