Avatar 9:02am Wild Neil:

PEACE Chris et al.
Avatar 9:03am bobdoesthings:

goodmorning.

  9:06am Torbjørn:

Shackleton sounding like Terry Riley ? Cool.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am MD:

Yo YO YO...signed,sealed,delivered!!! "Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?!?!"
John Lydon...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am MD:

Good morning Truly Faithful!!!
Avatar 9:08am Marcel M:

This is cool! G'morning.
Avatar 9:11am Rev. Turnip Druid:

'mornin, troops.
Avatar 9:13am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Finally got reasonable headphone replacement. A week spent with crap 'phones is like being killed with fire death all the time forever. I have spoken.
Avatar 9:14am Marcel M:

Enjoy, Rev! I'm sure it sounds like a whole new world now.
Avatar 9:15am Wild Neil:

@Rev-Glad you have sonic joy now...well, what did you get? Sony?
Avatar 9:16am bobdoesthings:

Beats by dre?!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am rsj:

alexa plays wfmu, sounds like crap, but she plays it. i guess i'll get a spot when they find some more to sell
Avatar 9:19am Rev. Turnip Druid:

The shocking thing is how expensive utter crap headphones are. Borrowed some Sennheisers (retail: $110-150) and they're all hollow midrange, like hearing stuff through a 3-yard concrete tube. And yet I can't stand super-bass-enhancing 'phones, so this process is stupid big drama.
Avatar 9:21am Rev. Turnip Druid:

I understand "beats by dre" fall into that super-bass-enhancing category. Haven't had the pleasure....
Avatar 9:22am Chris from DC:

Yes, just got new ones yesterday. They are crappy. This is disappointing.
Avatar 9:23am bobdoesthings:

@revTD - yeh I was semi-teasing about beats by dre.. I've heard there is like 1 or 2models which are alright if you'r into a more DJ/bassy/hiphop sound. but for the most part they are overpriced and gimmicky.. I found this one blog called "Inner Fidelity" where a guy does tons and tons of headphones reviews.. for an ignoramus like myself, I find it super helpful. however it's all that one dude's opinion.
Avatar 9:24am Cecile:

I just get those $20 Sonys. They work for me.
I also think you can't go wrong with those under $100 Koss headphones.
Avatar 9:25am Cecile:

but I'm not a professional musician and my hearing's a little f'd up through tinnitus and vertigo and other BS.
Avatar 9:26am Wild Neil:

I'm telling you, Sony makes good ones that are cheap. At least mine are...MDR-XD100's...paid $15 for them on Newegg, now they are no longer produced and go for like $60 on Amazon...or more....the driver is tilted to point right at my earhole....so L vs R really matters....It plays bass, mid and treble fairly equally....but I can hear people talking nearby so the cans do not totally isolate me, only drawback....I am super super picky and most headphones hurt me, but not these....get the full ear coverage ones, NOT buds or the mini ones, they suck.
Avatar 9:26am Chris M.:

buying headphones is super easy if you know how to read a frequency response graph
Avatar 9:27am Wild Neil:

@Chris M....should it be fairly flat then?
Avatar 9:27am Cecile:

whatever.
Avatar 9:28am Chris M.:

@Wild Neil: yeah. but you have to look at the dropoffs as well and decide what you're willing to lose.
Avatar 9:29am bobdoesthings:

mehh, as allured as I am to get nice headphones..my $25 sennheisers at work with the crusty foam pads have been fine for years.. even though the right side had to be wrapped in a foot or two of gaffers tape.
Avatar 9:29am Wild Neil:

OH...so Chris are you saying a headphone is biased toward either bass or treble one must drop off? Or something else?
Avatar 9:29am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Amazing how much a decent pair of headphones contributes to daily quality of life. World's best Flintstones Chewable Vitamin.™
Avatar 9:30am Rev. Turnip Druid:

that, plus this here stream thing.
Avatar 9:30am Chris M.:

@Wild Neil: no, i meant that no headphones are perfect. but you can get quality speakers in your headphones for much less than what you guys are talking about
Avatar 9:31am Cecile:

I like good enough headphones. Also, unless you are spending a fortune, nothing works on the bus. This is where minimalist music is key.
Avatar 9:31am Wild Neil:

This Sutcliffe Jugend sounds like a science fiction movie....
Avatar 9:31am Cecile:

Yeah, don't pay for the name.
Avatar 9:32am Cecile:

Everything is science fiction.
And I oughta know.
Avatar 9:33am bobdoesthings:

from what I understand the best sound from headphones come from open-ear headphones.. but those are the worst for public use because a lot of sound escapes.
  9:35am Brendan:

Chris M do you have the Porcupine Tree track Last Chance To Evacuate Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled?
  9:36am Polyus:

Little bit of Micah's vibe, I like it.
Avatar 9:36am Chris from DC:

Reminds me, Friday is the beginning of the apocalypse apparently. Pole shift or something.
Avatar 9:36am Chris M.:

@Brendan: i left it in my other pants
  9:37am Brendan:

Oh dang
Avatar 9:41am Wild Neil:

My Sony's are kinda open...the can has really really thin uninsulated walls...I can hear everybody in my office....
  9:41am a ghost:

Can anybody recommend a good pair of headphones?
Avatar 9:41am bobdoesthings:

@a ghost - I cannot.. but as mentioned previously .. there is this dude's blog - www.innerfidelity.com...
Avatar 9:41am Wild Neil:

@a ghost -you should try Sony. They are good enough...
Avatar 9:42am Cecile:

ooh, Porcupine Tree put out a decent album in 2005, "Deadwing". (shut up Rev)
Avatar 9:44am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Cecile: HA!
Avatar 9:45am Cecile:

Boris's Pink album came out that year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Michele:

I like this
Avatar 9:46am Rev. Turnip Druid:

My Porcupine-bashing is complex. I dig much of their Delirium-label era (Sky Moves Sideways is the far favorite) but (what I hear as) his over-production in later LPs does inspire fantasies of progger taxidermy...
Avatar 9:46am Rev. Turnip Druid:

yeh, that ISAN piece had a nice latter-day Cluster vibe. Mega nice.
Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

Al Stewart!
Avatar 9:48am Cecile:

Judas Priest put out Angel of Retribution. That was a decent one.
  9:50am a ghost:

Booo! My stockpile of Sony WDRs is running out. I don't know what to dooo!
Avatar 9:51am Cecile:

Opeth's Ghost Reveries also came out in 2005. Did you feel that it appropriately reflected ghost-Americans, ghost?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good morning, Chris M. and imaginary brigade!
  9:52am Ernst:

Funny you mention that, I'm returning from a hangover
  9:53am a ghost:

Dunno, Cecile, but I dug it!
Avatar 9:53am Cecile:

right on, ghost!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am tallbuildings:

@a ghost - i use Grado SR60s and i think they are pretty great.
Avatar 9:54am Marcel M:

I have Grados as well. Love 'em.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Michele:

good EAS test
Avatar 9:55am bobdoesthings:

that test of the EAS was tighttttt.. can you get it on 7" inch?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am Devin B.:

haha - hinckley had a vision
  9:55am a ghost:

tallbuildings and Marcel, thanks!
Avatar 9:55am Rev. Turnip Druid:

th'FUKS! A perfect album in every respect.
Avatar 9:55am Chris from DC:

Hopefully you have some JFA?
Avatar 9:55am Wild Neil:

John Hinkley Jr.'s brother knew some of the Bush family....hmmm.
Avatar 9:56am Cecile:

doc dart!
Avatar 9:56am Marcel M:

Its timely that he was released because there is some guy talking a lot about Reagan on the television.
Avatar 9:56am bobdoesthings:

you think Hinckley JR will try to shoot trump now?!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Stevel:

Saw the Crucifucks in a basement in Madison, WI in '82, '83. Awesome to hear them.
Avatar 9:58am Chris M.:

@Michele: thanks. i finally got the hang of it.
Avatar 9:58am Marcel M:

I love this Boris track. Never heard this live version.

(Chris the 7" version is on my demo)
Avatar 9:59am Cecile:

BORIIIIIIIIS!

People kind of steered me away from them, and I'm sorry they did.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:59am MD:

Makin Pumpkin Pie with Pumpkin Heads Head!!!
Avatar 9:59am Cecile:

that's the Crucifucks, not Boris.
Avatar 9:59am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Might as well release Hinckley. Enough time has passed, it's no longer fun to take visitors over to the Dupont Circle Hilton side exit for show & tell...
  9:59am a ghost:

Word around the ether is that Hinckley will endorse Trump
Avatar 9:59am Wild Neil:

Pink Floyd will release early years collection...with 27(!) discs....wow!

Rev, while the Dakota remains creepy as ever
Avatar 10:01am Marcel M:

Oh snap, new Cellular Chaos.
  10:03am ?:

hey there, all. thanks RTD, i might drop by Dupont Circle and take a look myself.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am sphere:

sorry, forgot to sign in. the last "?" was me.
Avatar 10:05am Chris from DC:

That block where the Hilton is has all this new construction and is almost unrecognizable.
Avatar 10:06am Cecile:

Dinosaur Jr. = Thunderclap Newman
Avatar 10:06am Wild Neil:

John Hinkley's brother knew some of the Bush family....hmmm.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Michele:

Is this new Dinosaur record really good? I feel like every song I hear I like....
Avatar 10:08am Cecile:

You've been listening to too much Dave Emory, Neil.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:09am sphere:

this is new Dinosaur Jr.? wow it is pretty hot.
Avatar 10:10am Chris from DC:

Th'Frond
Avatar 10:10am Chris M.:

@Michele it's definitely got a few songs that are great. i won't listen to the whole thing over and over though.
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

I wish J Macsis would make another doomy Witch album.
Avatar 10:10am Cheri Pi:

Cecile, agreed
Avatar 10:10am bobdoesthings:

they have a lighter instead... duh..
Avatar 10:12am Cheri Pi:

Cecile, agreed
Avatar 10:13am Cheri Pi:

Word from the pulpit was that the DJ show was the most boring show on earth when they played here last week...
Avatar 10:15am Wild Neil:

The Bevis Frond has been around so long, yet I have only just heard about them on FMU? Weird. I really like them!
Avatar 10:15am Cecile:

I saw them in '87. They made a perfect album. It was a perfect show. I never saw them as a band that could go anywhere from that. And in my mind, I was correct.
Avatar 10:15am Marcel M:

@Cecile/Pi: Have you heard Heavy Blanket?
Avatar 10:15am Cecile:

The Frond (actually Nick Salomon) is fantastic!

I might have, but I don't remember.
  10:16am a ghost:

bobdoesthings, you nailed it!
Avatar 10:16am Chris from DC:

Seen the Frond quite a few times, always a fantastic show. Neil, head to Bandcamp, you want to hear all that old stuff.
Avatar 10:16am Cheri Pi:

I dig Heavy Blanket.
Avatar 10:16am Cecile:

I only saw a show with two acoustic guitars, but it was great.
Avatar 10:17am Cheri Pi:

I have the Earthless Meets Heavy Blanket rekkid
Avatar 10:18am Chris M.:

the Bevis Frond released the best album of 2015: www.wfmu.org...
Avatar 10:20am Cecile:

boy, do I hate SharePoint.
  10:22am a ghost:

Chris M, I can hardly wait to hear that show
Avatar 10:22am Cheri Pi:

My boss asked me this morning if I was going to the 3rd Sharepoint workshop at 10, I was like...nah. I'm where I need to be right here with Chris M.
Avatar 10:23am Chris M.:

@a ghost @Cheri Pi: thanks! you won't regret it
Avatar 10:25am Cecile:

boy, do I love Killdozer
Avatar 10:27am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Did anybody get a birthday card for Marcel?
....Duchamp that is, not M.M....
Avatar 10:28am Cheri Pi:

I wish they would have used Killdozer at the DNC. There's still time!
If I have a Sharepoint question later I can count on Cecile to answer it.
Avatar 10:28am Marcel M:

@Cecile: Heavy Blanket is J. Masics' stoner rock band. And he plays guitar on it (unlike in Witch). I saw them play outdoors in BK once and the show got shut down in like 10 mins. Were you at that Chris? Was in your hood.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:28am MD:

Let's go out and get some coke?!?!?
  10:29am Polyus:

Pancake House while on drugs would be the best idea of all
Avatar 10:29am Cecile:

Marcel, that sounds great!!!! I'll have to check it out!
  10:29am Mandrax:

OMG...what was that clip from? Awesome!
Avatar 10:29am Chris M.:

@Marcel M: i wish
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

I've never heard Drunks with Guns on the right speed. I have the Zombie 12" and always played it at 33 rpm. I think I prefer it that slow.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am MD:

Liquid Acid on my pancakes!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:30am Stevel:

Thirsty now.
Avatar 10:30am Marcel M:

I was tripping hard. It was so loud. It was gnarly.

"They're luck to have a friend like you"...that is actually an interesting perspective. I will remember to use that...I make a point of at least trying to meet my son's friends and parents...

hurts good, this set
Avatar 10:35am Wild Neil:

lucky I mean
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Sue P.:

This middle set of music plus double-shot Americano are making the day bearable.
Avatar 10:36am Wild Neil:

@Sue P-wish I had a decent coffee right now instead of this Maxwell house swill I drink for free...
Avatar 10:36am SheWolf:

The Momus song is still in my head. How gorgeous.
Avatar 10:36am Cecile:

any coffee you don't pay for is the best coffee ever.
Avatar 10:36am Chris M.:

@Sue P.: ha thanks
Avatar 10:37am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Utility-grade coffee is still a sacred thing.
Avatar 10:38am Wild Neil:

OH...I am hearing "The pictures are breathing"....huh....
Guess I'll go get another cup of the best coffee ever....
  10:38am Polyus:

I recently got one of those cold brew contraptions. . .bad news. I drink that stuff like lemonade. Or Lemonade.
Avatar 10:38am Cecile:

YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
Avatar 10:39am Chris M.:

@SheWolf: it's a really good album! check it out
  10:39am Lala land:

Sometimes the fact that the next song in the playlist comes up a little early irks me, but then sometimes I see it's Scratch Acid, and I get a bit giddy. I want to hear it now now now!
Avatar 10:40am Cecile:

oh, my.
Avatar 10:42am SheWolf:

Listening now Chris. Thanks.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am sphere:

at great personal risk, i must say that i don't get Neil Hamburger....
Avatar 10:42am Marcel M:

That throat clearing opening was reminiscent of Kaufman on Letterman that time.
Avatar 10:43am Cecile:

I agree, sphere.
Avatar 10:43am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Driving across the country from NY to Tucson in the dead of winter & surviving on instant coffee made in highway rest-stop bathrooms (add terrible tap-water, shake thermos vigorously) -- terrible at the time but I learned to love crap coffee for its combat-grade utility...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:44am rsj:

is that rush?
Avatar 10:45am Wild Neil:

Neil Hamburger is not funny, he's "funny".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:45am fred:

@RTD: That's battle-earned wisdom right there. But still, can't someone send Neil decent coffee? Coffee matters, folks. The internet is basically made out of it
Avatar 10:45am bobdoesthings:

@marcel - more like Sam Kinison
Avatar 10:46am Cecile:

I miss Sam Kinison.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46am Sue P.:

I would posit that part of the Neil Hamburger charm is how "un-gettable" it actually is. I find it preposterously funny.
Avatar 10:47am Wild Neil:

I'm saving money...about $50 per month since coffee at Tim Hortons is $1.73 per cup...so I can afford horseback riding lessons.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am Barney Grubbs:

I saw Neil Hamburger do a set between Laddio Bollocko and Trans Am in Minneapolis a long time ago. The MPLS crowd was too polite, so a couple of folks from the other bands had to sneak to the back of the crowd and heckle him loudly enough to get the crowd to boo him off the stage. It was uncomfortably fun.
Avatar 10:48am Chris M.:

i don't understand why people don't understand Neil Hamburger. i've been a fan since the late 90s. he's one of the funniest comedians ever.
Avatar 10:49am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Used to love expensive snob coffee -- still do, but have embraced the miracle of mid-grade stuff. We've got about 500 cans of Cafe du Monde; not great & not terrible, but gets the job done.
Avatar 10:49am Rev. Turnip Druid:

Kicks Like a Mule: tasty time-travel moment there.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am fred:

@Neil: are these lessons for you or are you a dedicated father?
Avatar 10:50am bobdoesthings:

@revTD - is Cafe du monde the stuff that's flavored with Hickory?
Avatar 10:50am Marcel M:

I'm drinking out of a Cafe Du Monde MUG right now. BOOM!
Avatar 10:50am Cecile:

chicory.
Avatar 10:50am Marcel M:

The can of Monde is very different from what is served at the NOLA cafe.
Avatar 10:50am Marcel M:

At least to my buds.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am tallbuildings:

I've never heard this radio edit before...it's kind of funny
Avatar 10:51am bobdoesthings:

hickory ... chickory (dock?) .. is that the type of coffee that "viatnamese coffees" are made with?
Avatar 10:51am Cecile:

I have fooled my sister just by making Folger's with a clean pot, and chilled tap water. "This is great!" and she names like three boutique brands.
Avatar 10:51am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@cecile: aye, that's the stuff. It's plentiful & relatively cheap here. Also as a graphic designer type, I love the can design -- seemingly unchanged for 54,000 years.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51am fred:

@RTD: barely-better-than-terrible is what fuels me at work. Does the job. Enough caffeine, doesn't make me gag. I don't need more
  10:52am a ghost:

Neil Hamburger used to want to be loved. Then, I posit, something happened.
Avatar 10:52am Cecile:

I think it is just strong filtered coffee with a ton of condensed milk.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:54am Sue P.:

@tallbuildings - "It's all about girls and money." Cracked me up!
Avatar 10:54am Rev. Turnip Druid:

@Marcel: one day I'll make a grand pilgrimage to the Cafe in NOLA.
Avatar 10:54am Marcel M:

I used to drink crap coffee and not care. Then I got a machine at home and started messing around with various coffees. Now, its not so much that I can't drink bad coffee, I'm just so used to making it strong, that I can't stomach watery coffee. Even in fancy places with nice coffee, more than half the time, it tastes like water and I can't stand it. So unless there is a place nearby where I know they make it strong, I get black tea.
Avatar 10:55am bobdoesthings:

@cecile - yahh.. I know they used condensed milk. too sweet for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:55am fred:

I'll draw the line at milk: coffee should be black as midnight on a moonless night
Avatar 10:55am bobdoesthings:

anyone put a small dash of kosher salt in their french press?? I do it sometimes cause I read it online.. not sure if it does much though..
Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

I like milk, but in small amounts.
Avatar 10:56am Marcel M:

@Rev: Go late at night because the line is INSANE during the day and not worth it. But the coffee/beignets are good.

@Fred-I sincerely think its good advice for me...thanks Chris!
Café Bustelo, available at Wal Mart, Aldi and Tops supermarkets for $3.35 for 10 oz (about 283 grams)...it is Cuban style, and reminds my wife of growing up under martial law in Poland in 1981...Two sugar, three creams for me...

Marcel, I have similar leanings and have recently discovered a contraption called the Thermos. I recommend it!

@Aghost: A ha! Nice. I do have something similar that keeps liquid hot for 12 hours... Maybe I should utilize it for coffee..
Avatar 10:57am Cecile:

I'll have to watch it.

I'm a Cafe Bustello gal.

I like some trappings of that hyper-macho lifestyle, but it seems kind of exhausting to me and I'm pretty lazy.

I will drink any coffee, but I'm a real tea snob, which is both inconvenient and expensive

I love that Pylon wrote a song about Scrabble, "K".

The Meat Chickens. I think that would be a cool band name. As compared to The Egg Chickens which produce eggs. People around me have both....

Chris your show rocks. Sausage+torches=yum! Aldis has some awesome cheap mild Italian sausages that go perfect with grilled corn on the cob...lunch today: sweet and sour chicken with white rice from Golden Wok...like the 27th time I have ordered from them, they do not disappoint.
