This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

need to get COOL IN ZE POOL. so tonight, we swim
Avatar 7:08pm

and, it might be worth pointing out, this particular piece was indeed recorded live, underwater

i don't mean to brag but I have actually listened to a lot of this stuff underwater, while snorkeling a reef, on an underwater ipod. pretty cool stuff. got that Zissou sensation. I have to say the best stuff for it was, without a doubt, Sven Libaek. But the stuff from tonight;s program was amazing too
Avatar 7:12pm

Some of it is better at evoking the sea than accompanying the sea, I guess I mean to say

i listened to a videogame music podcast (Super Marcato Brothers #212) with this same theme awhile back. i didn't love the podcast overall tho it had some good stuff. but it turned me on to David Wise's "Aquatic Ambiance" from Donkey Kong Country which i thought was kind of amazing.

It's time playing a percussive accompaniment
Avatar 7:41pm

Evan,yes! :)

Evan I love that you listened to Sven Libaek while snorkeling. I didn't know there was such a thing as an underwater ipod that would allow for it.
Avatar 8:17pm
hyde:

The Silent World is awesome. I loved it when i was a kid. There's a decent looking unsubtitled French version of it on Youtube, fwiw (and let's be honest, Le Monde du Silence just sounds better) www.youtube.com...
Avatar 8:18pm
Flash Strap:

There is one, at least one, it didn't work all that perfectly but it was so so cool. It was just too weird to do it. I always prefer to listen to Libaek "out in the world" on portable speakers and tape players while doing my walkabouts, but to do it underwater was amazing, amazing
Avatar 8:19pm
Flash Strap:

Le Monde du Silence sounds a million times better
Avatar 8:27pm
hyde:

and also, how cool is Jacques Costeau? he more or less refined the aqualung into something useful for large numbers of divers, he worked for the Allies even though his brother was a huge collaborator with the Nazis and then he won the Palme D' Or for the Silent World. As someone who grew up in the 70's, he was everywhere on tv in those days in the US, which is kind of remarkable.

We used to keep 20+ chickens when I was growing up. One thing I don't miss about it is being constantly at war with raccoons, who I generally love

That and it was during a huge rabies epidemic, so every raccoon was a potential rage zombie

i wouldn't think raccoons would do that unless they were attracted by food...but i'm no expert. they have their reasons.

Just looking now at line-up on #2. It includes Ensemble Ricercar, who did a lot of early music at the time. That makes sense, as I recall the record as being somewhat eclectic. The track on which they perform is a "new version" of a track evidently on the first record, "Full Scale Ocean." Will have to seek the early records!
