I wish people would burst into song in my City, accompanied by a nice string arrangement and a male chorus.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10am Marcel M:

@SemChumbo: Believe it or not... it actually gets tiring here in NYC.

@Sem and Marcel: Ha ha ha! @P-90: The original version of this came out right after the war in 1946. This is the rerecorded version. Hi, pierre!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am sphere:

morning all! were the Jenkins songs a musical or was it a suite designed for an LP?
Avatar 9:29am Wild Neil:

The Turtles had AMAZING vocals and always remind me of Frank Zappa since he sang with them and actually did Happy Together at a Frank show that I heard once!
Avatar 9:30am Joe McG:

@sphere: He wrote it to be recorded. I'm not sure if it was ever really performed, but probably!

I'm sensing a theme here..
Avatar 9:34am Joe McG:

I'm not a Zappa fan by any stretch, but I want to see that new documentary!
Avatar 9:34am Wild Neil:

This Talking Heads album naïve tone is reminiscent of the earlier Modern Lovers...wonder if David Byrne was inspired by them? The music behind him ROCKS on this album...I am at a loss for a theme unless its awesome vocals...
Avatar 9:35am Sem Chumbo:

Talking Heads to Nick Gilder. That's some fine DJ'ing there, Joe:-D
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am pantz:

Is "We Built This City" next? Morning, Joe!
  9:38am P-90:

Wiki says Jenkins & Co. performed an early 16 minute version of the suite on Ed Sullivan's show. An unusual invitation from Sullivan, who usually liked to keep things moving with acts that lasted just a few minutes. Patti Page apparently did a version later. Beverly Mahr, who was the original "Julie", was married to Jenkins and a siinger in his orchestra.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Listener Scott:

You chose wisely.
Avatar 9:39am Wild Neil:

Oh, City. Got it..."City I live in " Talking Geds...I thought We Built This City was a commercial jingle when I first heard it...one of the worst songs EVER!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Ken From Hyde Park:

Siouxsie & The Banshees - "Cities In Dust"?
  9:43am P-90:

"All-Male Bar" meant something very different then than it does now...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43am Marcel M:

It surprises me they were out at 4am back then as well.

I think a few years back you could hire a guy to take you around in a shopping cart but I think Rudy dropped him off somewhere in NJ.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Ken From Hyde Park:

She was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar, you say?
Avatar 9:44am Wild Neil:

Here we go...could be anything..."highbrow" I think was meant ironically...

Avatar 10:00am Cecile:

mainstream modern soul? this cuts sounds more like blues.
Avatar 10:01am Cecile:

it's still great.
But some of these new categories: eccentric soul, mainstream modern soul...seem kind of weird to me.
Avatar 10:03am Wild Neil:

Is James Brown "eccentric soul"? Hey Cecile!
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

wow. This is crazy. It sounds like Eno and Anthony Moore!
Avatar 10:03am Joe McG:

@Cecile: In this case it's referring to the Mainstream label, so it's not really an attempt at genre coining!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:03am annie:

cecile, i still can't figure out the "psych" category
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

oh! Good. See? It's confusing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am Marcel M:

Psych is really, really overused now...
Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

I think eccentric soul is weird one-off soul 45s done by people who just wanted a souvenir of their career or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05am annie:

i learned a hellova lot when i first started riffling through the FMA
Avatar 10:06am Cecile:

FINCH! One of their guys played in Skyhooks for a while. I went to school with sharpies!
Avatar 10:07am Cecile:

OK, Joe, how do you feel about Foghat? I think the Fool for the City LP is pretty great.
Avatar 10:07am Wild Neil:

Finch really sounds like its from 1976. Joe, thanks for putting years in your playlist, it helps me place music in time and space.
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

1976 was such a pivotal year for me.
Avatar 10:09am Joe McG:

@Neil: No problem! @Cecile: I have no problem with Foghat! I may have never played them on my show, but it's not intentional.
Avatar 10:10am βrian:

Foghat conjures sitting in the cork-lined "sound room" in the basement, black light posters and all. Incense, yo.
Avatar 10:10am Cecile:

If you could slip some on some day, that would be awesome.
Avatar 10:10am Wild Neil:

I think Donny Iris is seriously under-rated. "Ah Leah" is an AWESOME song from the 80's.
Avatar 10:12am Cecile:

Donny Iris was not underrated in my neck of the woods. He never really spoke to me, but I wasn't the target audience.
Avatar 10:13am Joe McG:

@Neil: "Ah-Leah" is one of my favorite songs of that whole period. I've played it a couple of times but I would like to play it every week.
Avatar 10:13am Cecile:

Peter Perrett!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:13am Planet Tyler:

Peter Perrett - thanks for playing!
Avatar 10:13am MattBelow:

"Love In The City" is one of the best singles from 1969. Hard to beat that top notch tune!
Avatar 10:14am Wild Neil:

I am glad Donny Iris had a hit so that I got to hear it at all. I thought England's Glory was going to be The Grateful Dead, but it turns out it sounds like the Violent Femmes meet the Rolling Stones....and The Velvet Underground vocals...
Avatar 10:15am Joe McG:

Hey, Matt! :)
Avatar 10:15am Cecile:

They were the precursor band to the Only Ones. Gordon Gano probably took a lot from Peter's vocals.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Marcel M:

One of my philosophy professors used to say that he wanted to die while fully awake and conscious so he could finally know what happened. He'd be upset to die in his sleep and not notice anything. I kind of respect that!

@Joe: I know what you meant, wanting to go out in some kind of "Blaze of Glory."
Interesting story from @Will: was this production actually staged? Jenkins himself apparently only performed it as an oratorio kind of thing with his orchestra. And yes I saw that Goulet did an LP version of his own...

@Linda Lee: She was also super nice and even made the coffee for the band because (shameful face) I never actually made coffee at WFMU before.

I have a fine little chicken curry calling my name, with beautiful tapered red peppers and delicate slices of baby summer squash.
Avatar 11:21am Cecile:

Rolling Stone used to HATE Suicide so much.

Heya Joe and Faithful.
  11:23am Clay Pigeon:

Joe, look at all these comments. Your Arbies must be through the roof!
Avatar 11:23am Joe McG:

Wow, Clay Pigeon in the house!
Avatar 11:24am Wild Neil:

@Clay Pigeon-hello! You are the funniest man on radio bar none.
Avatar 11:24am Linda Lee:

Tahlia sounds like a sweetheart. hey there Clay!
Avatar 11:25am steve:

is the mysterious "Arby's" WFMU Friendship Society commentor some sort of twisted and hilarious play on the Arbies?
Avatar 11:28am Joe McG:

I think the Arbies used to open for the Archies.
Avatar 11:31am Jeff:

Then the Peoplemeters used to open for the Arbies, before the Peoplemeters became headliners in their own right.
  11:31am Clay Pigeon:

TY Wild Neil! Hi Linda! Arbies is the slang term we used to use for Arbitron ratings back in the day. Great show, Joe, as always!
Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

Aw, thanks, Clay! I'd like to dedicate the .38 Special to you today. Don't let go!

  11:41am melinda:

I'm enjoying this set too.
Avatar 11:43am Wild Neil:

Beavis and Butthead would have a lot of fun with this title " I Wanna Do It". heh heh heh....
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:44am coelacanth:

i guess i caught less than 1/2 the set. -definitely coming back to hear the whole thing.
  11:44am P-90:

Hi coel. And Hi @Clay! It's like the .38 Special drew you like a moth to a flame.
  11:46am P-90:

@Cecille: interesting observation about Rolling Stone hating on Suicide, then flooding the web with Springsteen's tribute to Vega when he checks out.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am Ken From Hyde Park:

Thanks, Joe. Have a good, lucky week.

P-90 -or kept me at bay a little too long!
(actually i do kind of wish i'd heard that song today. i loathed .38 special in high school & haven't heard it since; i'm curious what i'd think of it now.)
Avatar 11:51am Wild Neil:

I never really liked .38 special...

@DJ Joe McG: Thanks for a flawless, exemplary radio show today. I'd never heard Manhattan Tower, the rest of the playlist was spot-on, and the live set was very nice. Couldn't ask for more. Have yourself a good week.
