Hello Sam. It's been awhile.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:05pm Sam Segal:

@Mayuko: excited that the new Play Vertigo time will make it a lot easier for me to catch the show live.

Avatar 9:10pm Mayuko:

Same here, now I can tune in your show instead of taking 2 hrs creepy E train ride home from Jersey City.
Avatar 9:12pm coelacanth:

(okay, that was the worst pun to disgrace the comment board in a while.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:12pm Sam Segal:

Melinda, Coelacanth, one thousand welcomes to you.

this show is the only thing i like about working on monday nights
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:27pm Sam Segal:

You are too kind, @JTTBAGG :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm Sam Segal:

Thank you, @quinn! Glad your work schedule could lend me your ears for the evening.
Avatar 9:33pm coelacanth:

i wonder if the motivation to create a novelty song based on a famous person is sometimes the hope that it will somehow result in meeting the subject of the song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:43pm Sam Segal:

I wonder, @coelacanth. I did forget to mention that Betty Garrett went on to become much better known for playing the role of the landlady on Laverne & Shirley.
  9:45pm Bin Murphy:

Hey Sam! I see you're up to your total classical weirdness! Why don't you "hit me with your best shot!?"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:49pm Sam Segal:

Hi, Bin! That's a tall order, but I will try to "hit you with" my "best shot."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:50pm melinda:

I remember Betty Garrett, now that you mention her role on Laverne & Shirley.
Avatar 9:52pm coelacanth:

Sam, i did second guess myself and looked her up and yeah, i guess in the 70s (?) she was as well-known as Bogart so, good on her! she may have been bigger than i'm aware of when she recorded that song too; but it would've been hard to be bigger than Bogart!
Avatar 9:54pm geezerette:

Betty Garrett had a successful Broadway and film career in the late 40s & 50s.
Avatar 9:56pm geezerette:

Got her big break,I think, in a revue of new talent on, or "off", Broadway. She was "discovered".
Avatar 9:58pm coelacanth:

(+ i know if i was super famous i might still not feel entitled to have my people contact, say, Haley Bonar's, or Debbie Harry's people to arrange for a meet-up.)

...but I've heard amazing music lately...
Avatar 10:01pm coelacanth:

i figured it was something like that, g. -musicals are about as far from my thing as any thing, but her name's vaguely familiar.
i didn't watch Laverne & Shirley much.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:02pm Sam Segal:

@Rev and @Doug, two of my favorite Horse-losers...welcome!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:05pm Doug Schulkind:

I'll just keep Gangnam styling around the house until my pony comes home.
Avatar 10:05pm coelacanth:

  10:12pm Lincoln (Linked) Cowles:

Sam--It's Linked. Long time WFMUer, first time listening to YOUer. Love Owen Maercks...interesting transition to Herman's Hermits. Pretty crazy, though, the deal with Maercks. I'm old enough to have heard Teenage Sex Therapist when it first came out but obviously didn't until the rerelease a couple years ago. Preeeetty rad, Dad.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20pm Sam Segal:

Hiya, @Linked! Thanks for tuning in. Bizarre thing about that Maercks tune in particular is that an A&R guy from Elektra who heard the Teenage Sex Therapist record apparently recommended it to the Cars...meaning there's only one degree of separation between Henry Kaiser and Ric Ocasek.
Avatar 10:34pm coelacanth:

well, i'm taking ol' Scout into town 'fore the general store closes. 'plain outa oats.
i'll check back in later if i don't run into that pesty "lone ranger" character...he's always got some crazy drama he's gotta drag me into.
Thanks Sam!

Avatar 10:35pm Mayuko:

I didn't know this new EP just came out - just checked Discogs and saw someone says "Also definitely try this at different speeds. So far I am really enjoying CheetahT7b at 45rpm -12%". Feels like I see what he means now that I am hearing this.
Avatar 10:36pm Mayuko:

good night, coelacanth.
Avatar 10:36pm geezerette:

Adios coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37pm Sam Segal:

Thanks for hanging, @coel!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38pm Sam Segal:

@Mayuko: wow, that does make perfect sense. I imagine Richard D. James would approve of that kind of experimentation. Would love to hear that track slowed down by about 33%.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42pm Ike:

I don't know about this EP, but that may be a standard Aphex Twin m.o. He did an unrecognizable remix of a Curve song on a 12" in the early 90s with no speed marked. You could play it at 33 or at 45, and it sounded good both ways.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:46pm Sam Segal:

Hello, @Ike! Yeah, sounds like classic AT trickery.
  10:50pm Tommy 2 Shoes Kachelmacher:

SDRS, Thank you for the work tunes. I'm going home now. I'll see you in another life next to my second wife but please...keep away your knife.

Peace in Space, Hell on Earth.

Avatar 10:50pm Mayuko:

I think you're right Ike. and I've heard records get played at wrong speed intentionally on fmu many times anyway, marked or no marked! haha.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:51pm Sam Segal:

See you soon, 2 shoes!
  10:56pm Carmichael:

Hey dawgz.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:58pm Sam Segal:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:20pm Parq:

Joining in at last. Been listening all along but working in the kitchen and whatnot. Good show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:21pm Parq:

Mayuko, when I first started listening to FMU in '79, and into the mid-80s, the big thing was letting skipping vinyl go on and on -- like for a full minute or more. A roommate, who didn't quite get FMU, looked at me once and said, "They're *doing* it again!"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22pm Sam Segal:

Thank ya kindly, @Parq. I hope you've prepared enough of whatever you were working on in the kitchen for all of us.
Avatar 11:34pm Mayuko:

That must have been ジョン(犬) = Jon (inu). She's always in that dog costume. file.okumurayusuke.blog.shinobi.jp...
Avatar 11:35pm Mayuko:

inu = dog.
Avatar 11:36pm Mayuko:

@Parq haha! So it's a long tradition. Thanks to those DJs, people seem to think it's all just intentional when I make technical mistakes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40pm Sam Segal:

Wow, that is a great picture, @Mayuko. Thanks for the info. Does she have more recordings than that one? I'm so blown away by her music.
Avatar 11:42pm Mayuko:

I seem to remember she was also playing keyboard in a band called Saitoeletrico, but let me double check now. ha, feels like it's so very long ago that I knew these bands in Tokyo.
Avatar 11:47pm Mayuko:

yah she does play with Saitoeletorico - and has some releases from Oz Disc, a label in Tokyo. it's funny because when you played that Oz thing I first thought of Oz Disc. The label owner Taguchi runs a small but pretty crazy CD store called Enban which I used to go, I'm sure you can buy her stuff there... the problem is Tokyo is too faraway!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:50pm Sam Segal:

A problem indeed...I'd love to go someday though. I'll put Enban on my list. For now, perhaps Discogs can help.
Avatar 11:51pm Mayuko:

ok I guess at least you don't have to travel all the way across the pacific ocean www.discogs.com...
Avatar 11:52pm Mayuko:

Feel free to email me anytime when/if you need Japanese translation help, by the way! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:53pm Sam Segal:

Thank you! With the amount of Japanese music I tend to play, I'll try not to abuse the privilege.
Avatar 12:01am Mayuko:

oh! already midnight?! thanks Sam!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:03am Sam Segal:

Cheers, @Mayuko!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 12:04am melinda:
