Ah, there you go.
  3:19am Mark R.:

Sorry I was a little tardy with the playlist, folks. All's well now. Welcome Simon and friends.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:25am pacific standard simon:

It's true; the world's in a helluva state. Or the state's in a helluva world. Here's a thing from William Saletan st The Slate:

"This is the central thing to understand about what happened in Dallas: Black people who target whites are fundamentally allied with white people who target blacks. They’re on the same team: the race war team. It’s a lot like the global struggle over jihadism, in which Muslims who hate Christians collaborate, in effect, with Christians who hate Muslims. In the case of jihadism, the real struggle isn’t between two religions. It’s between people who want religious war and people who don’t. The same is true of race: Either you’re on the race war team, or you’re against it."
  3:26am Doug:

Moncur| III, one of my heroes.
  3:29am JoeRay:

Yea, Zappa!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:30am pacific standard simon:

On the other hand, here's some birthdays (and I quote):

July 10: Singer Mavis Staples is 77. Guitarist Jerry Miller of Moby Grape is 73. Folk singer Arlo Guthrie is 69. Bassist Dave Smalley of The Raspberries is 67. Singer Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys is 62. Banjo player Bela Fleck of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones is 58. Guitarist Peter DiStefano of Porno for Pyros is 51.

3 out of 4 of the Zappa concerts I saw were this band, and the other did this song before it was released on record.
  3:33am JoeRay:

Zappa's music is not played enough on WFMU. Thanks, Mark R!
Avatar 3:34am coelacanth:

pretty much any mothers of invention songs will be silly.
  3:35am JoeRay:

Bruce Fowler on trombone.
  3:35am JoeRay:

They got paid scale too!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36am Santos L. Halper:

More trombones and more FZ!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:36am pacific standard simon:

The story I heard was that Ike said, "You can use them, but you can only pay them union scale."
Avatar 3:38am coelacanth:

i like the velvets bed music...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:41am pacific standard simon:

This is the first bookend show of my birthday, on the 14th. Next week is closer, I guess. If you play Arlo this week, you can play Woody next week; he was born on the 14th too.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:46am pacific standard simon:

Well, it's not Roger Waters' birthday...
Avatar 3:46am coelacanth:

isn't this a pink floyd cover?
Avatar 3:47am coelacanth:

...or pink floyd?

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:10am pacific standard simon:

Even at this late date, the between-song patter on those Janis tracks is infinitely sad to me. I was watching the concert in San Francisco where it was announced that she had been found dead.
Avatar 4:10am coelacanth:

... (wax audio wont disappear after this)
Avatar 4:14am coelacanth:

cheezes are you more drunk than me?!

Avatar 4:27am coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:27am pacific standard simon:

Jes' gettin' this in, in case Mark don't play it:

It was late last night the other day
I thought I'd go up and see Ray
So l went up and I saw Ray
There was only one thing Ray could say, was

I, I don't want a pickle
I just want to ride on my motorcycle
And I don't want a tickle
I'd rather ride on my motorcycle
And I don't want to die
Just want to ride on my motorcycle

Late last week I was on my bike
I run into a friend named Mike
Run into my friend named Mike
Mike no longer has a bike, he cries

I don't want a pickle
Just want to ride on my motorcycle
And I don't want a tickle
'Cause I'd rather ride on my motorcycle
And I don't want to die
Just want to ride on my motorcycle

Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:32am pacific standard simon:

Happy birthday, Arlo.
Avatar 4:38am coelacanth:

riding a bike is so not a good idea when one's drunk-ish; but it's so tempting - as the cops rarely ever chase a bike.
(and it's so fun!)
...and, happy birthday Arlo!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:44am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Drunk people think they can do things when they can't...I'ma finish this beer & type some more...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:46am pacific standard simon:

I have a feeling that this birthday stuff is annoying the DJ, that the focus of the show, beside the music, is a music calendar generally. I so, I beg your pardon.
  4:48am Mark R.:

None of it annoys me, I love all the comments!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:48am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...you can harvest many souls faster w/ a motorsickle...
Avatar 4:49am coelacanth:

...speaking of which - both bands depicted are totally fuckable!
Avatar 4:51am coelacanth:

...i miss my partner in crime. i would never have to say these things if she was still around. i'd just have to defend her on the comment board!
...oh, well. she's gone.

  4:51am Mark R.:

Rest assured, Arlo Guthrie's birthday will not go unnoticed. But I wanted to play some music from this millennium in this set first.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 4:56am pacific standard simon:

I suppose "Victor Jara" would be more to the point but, jeez, that's depressing...
Avatar 4:56am coelacanth:

unmistakable. Marissa Nadler.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:09am pacific standard simon:

I miss the days of label affiliates.
Avatar 5:15am coelacanth:

i remember bringing a bloodrock album to a friend's house when i was about 10. my friend's older brother was there with his friends and someone referred to my music as "that capital shit". i was just thankful i didn't bring over any grand funk railroad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:15am pacific standard simon:

I wonder if The Donald would recognize American Greatness in this set.
Avatar 5:17am coelacanth:

do you mean ronald whack donald or donald duck?

Ultimate freeform move to classical after early jazz!!!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:18am pacific standard simon:

I mean Donald Dick.
Avatar 5:19am coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:22am pacific standard simon:

Capitol label was pretty cool when they had Sinatra and Cole. Steve Miller Band, for a while.
Avatar 5:23am coelacanth:

someone tried to get me to play "alice's restaurant" on the jukebox at the pub a few weeks ago. i physically fought him back and played the weirdstock version of this song.
Avatar 5:23am coelacanth:

(the original)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:24am pacific standard simon:

This sounds way different from the triple LP Cotillion version.
Avatar 5:25am coelacanth:

damn. great Tim Buckley album.
....and lest we forget the beatles were on capital.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:26am pacific standard simon:

On;y in the USA
  5:28am Mark R.:

The original release was heavily sweetened. This is the raw recording, where his mic wasn't working at the beginning. Just for a change of pace. Casting a new light on an old favorite. I still love the original "Woodstock" album, though. Carefully and lovingly crafted together out of miles of tapes, they did a great job!
Avatar 5:28am Sem Chumbo:

Morning, Mark, coel, PSS, fred. Tim Buckley=totally amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:29am pacific standard simon:

I would give any number of James Taylors to have one Tim Buckley.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:32am pacific standard simon:

Get some bass clarinet on!
Avatar 5:34am coelacanth:

pss @5:29- absolutely.
- hey there Sem!
...Mark, that should've been obvious, huh?! Thanks for playing the unaugmented version.

Great way to end the show!!!
Avatar 5:50am coelacanth:

Thank you Mark for excellent programming, commentary and for destroying my notions of circular time.
  5:51am Mark R.:

Thanks for tuning in Coel...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 5:51am pacific standard simon:

Cool. You should call yourselves The Aristocrats too, though, so I'll know to buy you.
