Hey Joe. What unexpected earliness.
  9:04am V Priceless:

Hey Joe! Happy 4th to ya!

Good morning, Joe, and hello, across the-pond-er, BiUK.

Hi, folks, and happy 4th of July, if that rings your bell. No Sousa tributes to America today, unfortunately!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:09am Brian in UK:

Hello Sem, the UK has cast off and is somewhere close to the Azores on its way to the US. Due to the fact that everyone wants a window seat the UK is in danger of tipping over completely. Ensuring that Malcolm Gladwell's much overused expression is utilised.
Avatar 9:13am Joe McG:

@Brian: Looking forward to the crash when the islands collide.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am annie:

hello from on the road of the Nick's Diner tour! currently back in upstate new york and heading to connecticut wednesday.
Avatar 9:18am Sem Chumbo:

Ah, we have much to thank/blame Mr. Malcolm for. Watched and read much in the pre-June 23 run-up.
Oh, what a tangled web was woven.
Meanwhile, the potatoes are doing fine here.
  9:18am famous original icecreamwolf:

I misread this as Omar Gelato.
Avatar 9:18am Sem Chumbo:

DIBS! on Omar Gelato as a character name.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:22am melinda:

Great tunes, Joe. I liked that version of Tomorrow Never Knows, nice kickoff.
Avatar 9:23am Joe McG:

"Omar Gelato" is a famous Algerian movie starring Omar Gatlato. Little known fact.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am Brian in UK:

@Sem I used to got to skool with a guy called Steve Napolitano. (close)

There are lies, damn lies and referendums.
Avatar 9:25am Joe McG:

Thanks, melinda. I toyed with a "Tomorrow Never Knows" set since I like every version ever recorded, but then somebody reminded me of "Then He Kissed Me" a few weeks ago.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Brian in UK:

My wife made some delicious Christmas Pudding ice cream earlier this year.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:25am Ken From Hyde Park:

@annie - The bridge tolls over the Hudson are currently $1.25 between Bear Mountain Bridge and Rip Van Winkle Bridge. Set some change aside for a quick trip through the toll booth.

@BiuK: bought my first tab of acid from a guy named Ralph Tripp.
Christmas Pudding ice cream sounds like a winner. Can I order from Tesco?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32am Brian in UK:

We got five second hand chickens yesterday. The old birds have all gone to meet their maker.
Avatar 9:34am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

So, 2nd hand chickens. You have to egg them on to produce?
Avatar 9:35am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

And the old birds went home to meet their maker, a Cosmic egg I presume?
Avatar 9:37am Joe McG:

I like all this animal talk. Suits the tunes.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am melinda:

I love this Tom Tom Club song.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39am Andrew Waterloo:

this Tom Tom Club is amazing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am Brian in UK:

We did not have to shell out a fortune. There were four eggs this morning. They do look very tatty in the feather department but that will soon improve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:41am Andrew Waterloo:

guess I can wait a little while longer before getting coffee :)
  9:41am Greg from ZONE 5:

Happy 4th, Joe!

KC and the Elephant Talk Band. Wonderful.
@BiUK, those rescue chickens do not know how good they have it now.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:44am Brian in UK:

Yes Sem, thanks to the EU battery hen farming was stopped. It is still bad but not as bad. Still all those Leave numb nuts wanted to talk about was immigration.
Avatar 9:44am Joe McG:

Hey Greg! Happy one to you!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:45am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Webhamster Henry:

I really liked this TH live album.
Avatar 9:52am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

That King Crimson sounded like it belonged on *My Life in the Bush of Ghosts*, reminded by Talking Heads cut. There, no *the*
  9:52am Jeffy Jazz:

Wow, was the live TH really 1982?! Yikes!
Nice Adrian Belew mini-set, Joe!
Avatar 9:56am Joe McG:

@Jeffy: I hear he's a real nice guy!
Avatar 9:57am joshuafried:

Shades of 'Superfly' - or 'Superfly''s got shades of this. Either way, it's super fly
Avatar 9:58am joshuafried:

(i mean 'groovy babe')
Avatar 9:59am Joe McG:

@joshua: I'm always a bit skeptical of these new soul bands trying to sound like old soul bands but that track smokes.
  9:59am P-90:

Great set, and Happy Fourth, Joe McG and McFriends. And I can confirm that Adrian B is a REAL nice guy, a true gentleman. Or gentle man.
  10:00am Jeffy Jazz:

Yeah, Joe! Saw him with KC, TH and The Bears back in the day. He was always smiling and having a blast.
  10:03am P-90:

and @Sem: I remember (cause I'm THAT old) when that KC "Discipline" album was released, everyone was saying it sounded a bit like Talking Heads.
  10:05am Jack:

also, "City of Tiny Lights" with Zappa, a lot of fun.
Avatar 10:05am Marc Francis:

Happy 4th Joe and all! I am north of the border and waxing nostalgic for the smell of July 4th BBQ.
Avatar 10:07am Sweet Essence of Giraffe:

@P-90: good to see you here and read your tales of long ago:-D.
I am now searching using* TH and KC* terms, just 'cause I'd want to read that for myself.

Avatar 10:11am Joe McG:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:15am coelacanth:

good morning Joe and others
Avatar 10:16am joshuafried:

Didn't even see the year! Hah--I got Boltoned.
  10:17am Dave:

7 inches
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:18am Andrew Waterloo:

yes to 12"s
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:20am coelacanth:

okay, then. i'd pretty definitely enjoy the usual 7"ers much more; but it doesn't really matter.
  10:22am P-90:

Chris and Tina famously had some kind of falling out with Adrian during those Tom Tom Club sessions.
They're all to professional to discuss it in public, but apparently some of Adrian's favorite guitar parts, that he has been led to believe were intrinsic to some of the songs, wound up being removed completely from the final mix, done in his absence. And erased, so he couldn't even keep personal copies of what he'd done.
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

Maybe I'll do both! I did bring 45s, too.
Avatar 10:23am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

12"s mean - long remixes & dancey trax? If we're talking, say, Julian Cope, that's one thing...

...A not uncommon refrain from Lead Guitarists...
  10:24am Jeffy Jazz:

@P-90: Damn, I would love to hear those outtakes!
His playing with Bowie was great, too. There's a YT of the band in Germany doing Stay and it's just beautiful.
Avatar 10:25am Marc Francis:

One show a year of 12"s seems fun!
  10:25am melinda:

Combo of 7 and 12s sounds good.
Avatar 10:25am Joe McG:

@P-90: Wow, didn't know that! @RR63: Some dancey, but in a cheesy 80s way.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am coelacanth:

yeah, if you've got a 12" with an 8 minute Adrian Belew git solo, i'm down!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:31am Brian in UK:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:33am coelacanth:

i did buy some of those cheesey dance extensions in the 80s. - sheena easton; several by the cure; heaven 17....i plan to part with them though. it's a lot of space and weight for just a couple of songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:35am Greg from ZONE 5:

We'll duet that, Joe.
  10:35am Dean:

Whitney Houston's "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" on 12" was the best record of 1987.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am coelacanth:

sorry, no! that might have to be "come on, pilgrim" by the pixies.
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@Dean: I won't argue with that. @Greg: Excellent!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am coelacanth:

here, a good example of why i like single file.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Ken From Hyde Park:

As long as I can hear the surface noise, either format works for me.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am coelacanth:

the isleys had some extended mixes in the 80s! (hint hint!)
Avatar 10:45am Joe McG:

@coelacanth: Wish I had some with me!
Avatar 10:46am Faye:

fav tune!
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

Faye! Nice work last eve.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:48am coelacanth:

Thanks anyway Joe!
...i just looked and i guess most of the isleys' badass dance mixes (ie: "fight the power") were in the 70s' anyway.
  10:48am JakeGould:

Nobody’s made a cassingle joke yet?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Guido from Cologne:

Love this Jennifer and Angela
Hi Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am coelacanth:

if not for the production this could easily be a current track.
Avatar 10:49am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Jennifer and Angela, wow!
Avatar 10:51am Joe McG:

Hey Todd! Good one, right?
Avatar 10:52am Todd-o-phonic Todd:

Yeah...probably a good deal too, only copy I can find currently for sale would set me back a C note!
  10:52am Dean:

Agh! Had a flash recollection of Extreme's "More than Words"! Traumatic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:52am Guido from Cologne:

Jennifer Lewis & Angela Strange - I've Heard It All Before
Could it be it is an English production.
On YouTube only EMI-Columbia-pressings
Avatar 10:52am Joe McG:

@Todd: What? I paid $2 for it!
Avatar 10:53am Ham:

no more words!
Avatar 10:55am Joe McG:

@Dean: Sorry to do that to you, Dean. But "No More Words" is a MUCH better song.
  10:56am Dean:

Heck, yeah.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:56am Guido from Cologne:

Just checked Phil Dennys:
Arranger active in the UK
  10:58am Dean:

They're still playing live.
  11:00am Jeffy Jazz:

Berlin is probably playing at B.B. Kings or a casino near you. All 80s bands eventually end up playing those places.

Avatar 11:05am Joe McG:

Kelly! Happy Blue Monday to you!
Avatar 11:07am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Apparently this song was built around something that malfunctioning drum machine did, so it's arguably the foundation of "glitch electronica".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Brian in UK:

First time listener - to this tune.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:08am Brian in UK:

....and probably last time listener.
Avatar 11:09am Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Bebe and Louis Barron were circuit-bending in the 1950s to do the 'Forbidden Planet' soundtrack...but it wasn't especially Dancey...

  11:10am Listener Alexandra:

Happy 4th, Joe...thanks for all of the 80s goodness this morning :-)

Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" 12" was 1986. Motorhead's first single was 1977.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Parq:

"Baby Oh No" was one of my all-time favorite 80s single. I hate making lists, but if I did manage to narrow it down to 5, this would be on it. Digging this extended version, which I never heard before.
  11:18am melinda:

I love B W W
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am coelacanth:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am ChrisB.:

The 12" remix craze kept Arthur Baker pretty busy during the 80's.

New Wave 12"’s going steady.
Avatar 11:24am Marc Francis:

Hot damn, Joe!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Ken From Hyde Park:

Good gravy! There's a float in the parade here that is a teen rock band on a flatbed and they're playing "Back in Black"!
Avatar 11:29am the Canterbury wood-elf:

Second time i've heard this Shriekback in a week (Marty M played it a few days ago), having completely missed it in the 80s. And Bananarama, wow! Never knew they did anything like that...
Avatar 11:29am Joe McG:

@Ken: More grads from the school of rock. @ChrisB: True enough! @Parq: Glad I could spin that for you!
  11:31am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

You're hitting a sweet spot w/ this set, Joe.
  11:33am JakeGould:

@KenFromHydePark: Have they played “7 Nation Army” yet?
Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

@Bryan: Thanks! I don't think I've ever played The Sugarcubes/Bjork on my show.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am Brian in UK:

They recorded Motorcycle Mama for Elektra's Mabinogion.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:38am Ken From Hyde Park:

@Jake - No, I think they only practiced that one song for their performance.
  11:40am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

I was just listening to Hosono's version of this song the other day.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:40am Ken From Hyde Park:

Nice salute, Joe, to the intrepid Icelandic soccer team.
  11:40am JakeGould:

Speaking of “Frank Chickens” I’m not too sure about chicken franks this July 4th or any day to be honest.
  11:40am Listener Bryan (the Professor):

@joe -- that birthday 12" was basically my freshman year in college in one platter.
Avatar 11:41am Joe McG:

@Ken: Ha ha, go Iceland!

  11:45am JakeGould:

So this is the disco remix of “Space Oddity?” Where is the disco?
  11:45am Mike Sin:

Re: Space Oddity
Viewing from my phone -- was this version that 1980 (?) version that appeared on TV show or some such?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:45am Brian in UK:

Yes Joe, we are trying to name the new chooks but they are all so similar. Twinkle, Sparkle & Ruby so far.

This is a disco-remix?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Parq:

That Frank Chickens track was a big FMU hit when it first came out.
Avatar 11:47am Marc Francis:

When does the disco part of the disco mix kick in?
Avatar 11:47am Joe McG:

@Mike and Brian: I'm not sure if it's the same one as the TV show, but it is 1980 and clearly re-recorded. As for being a disco record, I'm not sure adding a big thudding kickdrum in a dirgey fashion constitutes disco! :)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am Brian in UK:

Disco to go.
Avatar 11:48am Joe McG:

A not quite "Disco Oddity." All due respect to D.B.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:49am Parq:

Oh man, I haven't even thought about this Schilling track in forever.
Avatar 11:50am Joe McG:

@Parq: The 12" is a "Super 12" with FOUR versions! About three too many.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am Brian in UK:

Well DB was never Mr Chuckles, a morose character but there was always some humour lurking as a saving grace.

2 sets of '45s (I presume) Joe. Couldn't be better thanks.

@tadpoles: You bet! @Bryan: What could be more 80s than Erasure? Except for maybe Simple Minds.

Or Tears for Fears, which Sharon loved so much in that earlier song....

@joe I got into this groove this week listening to a bunch of YMO and Hosono records and I ended up downloading the first couple OMD records and true confessions they sounded so awesome I almost cried.

Hmm. Whereas on one hand the 1980s were when things began to go off the rails Commercially in many respects - it was also a time when the PopCharts & the Experimental Edge had some dalliance w/ each other...That was quite bearable...

I was in college in the 80s and am now working on another degree. So the singles set was great for working on a paper. Thanks!
