good morning

Hello Imagineers
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03am Marcel M:

One hell of a Beatles song!

Awesome opening. Hello Chris.
Avatar 9:04am Chris M.:

good morning everybody
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am sphere:

hey all. i hear that Haino has been working with fashionista Marc Jacobs!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:06am Ken From Hyde Park:

Welcome to Better Than The Beatlesmania!
Avatar 9:07am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Chris and mighty imangineers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:08am MD:

Good morning my Freeform Maniacs!!!
Avatar 9:11am Chris M.:

i'd like an irish coffee, please. hold the coffee
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:15am Marcel M:

Very fitting to hear Haino this morning because I woke up to see this photo of him and hear that he did the soundtrack to Marc Jacobs runway event: postimg.org...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Marcel M:

"Even going against the customary musical soundtrack, Jacobs had a single bell chimed repeatedly. He was inspired by Keiji Haino, the Japanese musician whose work explores the "haunted spaces between the notes," as the show notes said."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16am Marcel M:

Oh inspired by him not done by him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17am Marcel M:

Well this source said Haino did it: "He set his show to silence, broken only by the occasional echoing chime, a track created by the Japanese rock star Keiji Haino, who focuses on what Mr. Jacobs’s crib sheet characterized as the “haunted space between the notes.”"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:18am Ken From Hyde Park:

I like the image today, but I was expecting to see a comic that was better than Beetle Bailey.
Avatar 9:18am bobdoesthings:

I don't blame him, probably a handsome paycheck.
Avatar 9:18am Chris M.:

@Marcel M: almost as scary as the fashion show in death wish 5
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:19am Marcel M:

Yeah I mean its a high fashion show its not like he did a KFC commercial.

@Chris: haha, yeah those chicks looks pretty gnarly.
  9:19am Unclear on the concept:

So, Earth Wind & Fire's "Got to Get You Into My Life" next, right?
  9:22am P-90:

Hi Chris and haunted spacers.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:23am sphere:

perhaps there is an all-Beatles cover show from Chris M in an alternate universe.
Avatar 9:24am Chris M.:

if your spaces are haunted please seek medical assistance.
Avatar 9:24am bobdoesthings:

is it still considered "high fashion" if their clothing is mass produced and made in china? or is it like the fashion shows are the artsy pieces.. and the crap you get in the store isn't that stuff ? actually I dont care. neevrmidn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:28am Marcel M:

I don't think you can really buy the high fashion runway stuff in stores. Its like an art show.
Avatar 9:32am Cheri Pi:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:33am Stevel:

He sounds more angry than sad. My throat is sympathetically sore.
Avatar 9:34am Cheri Pi:

He sounds like he stubbed his toe and probably hasn't had his coffee yet. I know what that feels like.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am Parq:

Knowing how most people feel about off-off-mainstream music and such, I'm inclined to let people who adore high fashion go to hell their own way.
Avatar 9:34am Cheri Pi:

...and can't find his keys. Is it Friday yet?
Avatar 9:35am Cheri Pi:

Hang in there bud!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:37am Marcel M:

We go to hell listening to stubbed toe no coffee screaming black metal, they go to hell watching a Marc Jacobs fashion show. All the same.
Avatar 9:39am bobdoesthings:

@parq/marcel - i concur.
  9:46am Marcel M:

This is sick
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:47am Andrew Waterloo:

my take on high fashion is: I don't get.
Avatar 9:54am βrian:

Which flavor of high fashion is under discussion?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:55am sphere:

in hell, the fashionistas end up at a Incapacitants show and we end up at a Mary Kate and Ashley Olsen show.
Avatar 9:55am Cecile:

Do you have Booker T and the MGs' McLemore Avenue? It's a funky track by track take on Abbey Road. It's pretty awesome.
Avatar 9:55am βrian:

I mean, I'm totally into my Griswold cast iron pan, for example ...
Avatar 9:57am Cecile:

The high fashion shows are R&D for their lines. Most fashion houses make their money off perfume.

And I still get sniffles thinking about the late Alexander McQueen.

I like Marc Jacobs. He's an interesting guy.
Avatar 9:57am βrian:

"I like your hat. ...

-Jack Palance, in Baghdad Cafe
Avatar 9:58am Cecile:

Marc always gets into new things, and incorporates that into his work. I can't complain about that.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:58am Mick:

NJ/NY people: RIP Tekserve
Avatar 9:59am Cheri Pi:

My favorite is Comme des Garcons, I'm buds with a collector of their stuff.
Avatar 10:00am bobdoesthings:

@Brian - fancy.. they don't make Griswold anymore right? aren't they highly priced cast iron? I just got the regular old Lodge..
Avatar 10:01am Cecile:

Who I really, really love is Chado Ralph Rucci. Rucci's deal is that everthing is bespoke, handmade, and a wearable piece of art. If I won the powerball, I would commission a jacket right away.

Comme is great! I also love the Belgians - Martin Margiela, Anne DeMullemeester, Dries van Noten.

And I also love Ralph Lauren and Michael Kors because they make pretty big girl clothes.
Avatar 10:02am cee:

i really want anything to happen. main reason i tune in
Avatar 10:02am βrian:

Yep, mine are third-generation hand-me-downs that nobody else wanted. I hear they're tragically hip now.
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

Oh, it looks like Ralph Rucci is doing some ready-to-wear. Hmmmm. maybe I can get a scarf.

Brian I have a cast iron pan from my husband's great aunt, I don't know who made it but it still works.
Avatar 10:05am Chris M.:

please come to my fashion show. it's all gas-based clothing. different colors, smells and densities. it's called simply Ephemera. solids and liquids are so last season.
Avatar 10:06am βrian:

If you haven't already, try making frittatas. It's a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
Avatar 10:07am Cecile:

I'll be in the front row, Chris.
Avatar 10:07am βrian:

My clothing tends toward induction, these days, but gas is still a solid standby.
Avatar 10:09am Chris from DC:

Starflyer 59 is still going?
  10:09am Ike:

This Starflyer 59 track is a great stealth cover of "Glass Onion". Love how you sneaked that one in on us.
  10:15am Marcel M:

Nice soundtrack for driving upstate
Avatar 10:17am Chris from DC:

Oh hey Alaric, this record is great.
  10:22am Brendan:

Dont sleep on the latest plasma couture.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:23am coelacanth:

good morning
Avatar 10:25am βrian:

Nothing looks quite as fetching as a nice lambent aura. Designers hate it, of course, since it can't be trademarked.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:25am sphere:

i'm very fond of Junior Walker's "Tomorrow Never Knows." as far as i'm concerned, no one has really covered it well except him.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:27am fred:

@βrian: don't be silly, everything can be trademarked, or at least patented
  10:28am Marcel M:

Def better than OG
Avatar 10:30am Cecile:

I used to clean chicken fryers to that song. This is better, but I still smell burned fat.
  10:30am famous original icecreamwolf:

Not only is Marc Jacobs working with Keiji Haino, he also has Genesis Breyer P-Orridge in his ads!
Avatar 10:30am хтinа:

is this a sarcastic use of Otomo Yoshihide?
  10:30am βrian:

Mom always said to listen to sensible noise.
Avatar 10:31am Cecile:

Billy G!
Avatar 10:31am Chris M.:

@хтinа: i don't play anything ironically on my show ever.
Avatar 10:32am Cecile:

cool, icecreamwolf!
Avatar 10:33am βrian:

This reminds me of watching The Ghoul on afternoon TV, long ago.

"I want to bite your hand."
Avatar 10:33am Chris from DC:

Sphere, Chameleons did a very good job on Tomorrow Never Knows.
  10:34am llid:

sphere, Eno did a pretty rokin TKN too
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:34am Greg from ZONE 5:

How have I never heard this?!
  10:35am llid:

Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

Oh! and 801 did as well. as "TKN"
Avatar 10:35am Cecile:

I want Mark E. to do a standards album. It would be the greatest thing ever.
Avatar 10:36am Cecile:

I mean TNK
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:36am Greg from ZONE 5:

"Mark E. Sings!"
  10:36am llid:

Cecile how did we both make the same mistake? weird
  10:37am Ike:

Wait, actual Beatles covers? I'm so confused. I thought it was a prank and we'd have nothing Beatles-related at all. Nice double-cross, Chris! Or is that a triple-cross?
Avatar 10:37am Cecile:

it is.
  10:37am llid:

"Now for football scores"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:38am BLCKDGRD:

Irwin's involved.
Avatar 10:38am PKNY:

@sphere - do you mean Junior Parker, or Junior Walker? If the former, he also does a nice version of "Taxman" on the same record.
Avatar 10:39am PKNY:

My personal fav cover: a young Rick Springfield shredding the hell out of "Eleanor Rigby" --> www.youtube.com...
Avatar 10:39am βrian:

Wouldn't you know it, there actually is a band called The Scarabs.

Gaylord, thrill us with your acumen!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am sphere:

sorry, i meant Junior Parker. my bad.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:42am jmd:

Gaylord! Nice.
Avatar 10:43am Cecile:

black hole sun is a Beatles song they never wrote.
  10:44am Dean:

There really should be a Take A Lot of Acid Beatles of 1967.
Avatar 10:44am Cecile:

For a lot of us Midwesterners of a certain age, we just heard the worst Beatles songs over and over again.
  10:45am llid:

Same thing at the Piggly Wiggly!
  10:47am Brendan:

Chris, agreed. They were omnipresent. As well as omnipotent, omniscient, and omnivorous.
Avatar 10:48am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:49am Andrew Waterloo:

yup yup yup yup
  10:49am Marcel M:

Gaylord! What a nice surprise
  10:49am Dean:

Best Beatles will be found on the bootlegs. Paradoxically, George Martin deserves a good share of the credit for the band's work.
  10:50am Dean:

How do you top "Why don't we do it in the road"?!
  10:51am llid:

Dean - Wild Honey Pie!
  10:52am Dean:

Billie Holiday
Avatar 10:53am ottovonbqe:

I think Chris M should write a short treatise on aesthetics
Avatar 10:54am Cecile:

Gaylord, have you heard McLemore Avenue?
Avatar 10:55am Cecile:

I love the Yellow Submarine soundtrack.
Avatar 10:55am PKNY:

When I went to Memphis last summer, I purposely stood in the middle of McLemore Ave to try to replicate that album cover shot.
  10:56am llid:

Seems you guys are focusing on Lennon/McCartney, maybe not Harrison so much?
Avatar 10:57am Cecile:

PKNY, that is awesome.

I like a lot of George's songs.

Good call, @llid!

well, gotta go to a meeting. back in a few.
Avatar 10:58am PKNY:

Whoa, this Blackwater Park is nice!
Avatar 10:59am Cecile:

Opeth named an album after this band!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:59am Gaylord Fields:

@Cecile: Booker T + Abbey Road has always been my idea of great.
Avatar 11:00am Cecile:

Excellent! A lot of people don't know it who I think should. I should have known you knew it!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:01am Gaylord Fields:

Ilid: George didn't write as many songs, but his guitar playing defined their sound very strongly. So perhaps we should.
  11:01am Greg:

Any chance you have some Laibach/Let It Be?
  11:02am llid:

fwiw, all beatles agreed to putting a harrison song on the Voyager
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Ken From Hyde Park:

Did anyone cover that Number 9 song?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:03am Gaylord Fields:

@Ilid: Perhaps they just wanted George's songs sent far away from them. (Oh, I kid.)
  11:04am llid:

Gaylord, he got the job done, and maybe that isn't enough for SOME PEOPLE. I wonder what Guitar...Weeps would have sounded like if he hadn't quit the day before they laid down the guitar track!
  11:05am llid:

  11:05am Polyus:

Has anyone ever covered Love You To? I always wanted to do that, but it seems like it could just end up sounding like a bad jam band.
  11:06am Dean:

The Residents, kinda. Not exactly a cover of Rev'n no. 9, and it's nominally a version of "Day in the Life," but it obviously tips the hat to that aspect of Fab Four experimentalism.
Avatar 11:06am Chris from DC:

I don't think I've ever heard a bad cover of Dear Prudence.
  11:06am llid:

KHP Alarm Will Sound

Tomorrow is my fave beatles song.
Avatar 11:09am MenfussMike:

  11:09am Ochre Ogre:

I was once in my local renovated (including music format) C Town supermarket, and they played Pink Floyd 'Echoes'! Nearly had a LSD flashback.
  11:10am llid:

MenfussMike I don't think anyone would disagree with you there
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Ken From Hyde Park:

I hope there's time for Beatles-themed horoscopes today.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:11am Mike East:

@Cecile 10:43 - about 15 years ago I used to rant about how Soundgarden (Black Hole Sun especially) was just playing Beatles songs.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:13am Rich in Washington:

I need to make good on my longstanding threat to make an all-Ringo cover band called The Dungbeatles.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:14am Andrew Waterloo:

Ringo was a very atypical drummer who a lot of composition
  11:14am Brendan:

I think for me it is Pavlovian thing. Rooted in hazardous exposure to 'The Captain of Her Heart' alongside Beatles music in a public place.
  11:14am Polyus:

Keith Moon would be a terrible drummer in a lot of other bands, too.
  11:14am Dean:

It sounds like their ubiquity, our strained familiarity with their records, is a big fatigue factor. I'd guess most of us heard most of what we heard of The Beatles on crappy sound systems: close-and-play turntables, transistor radios, etc. I bet a pristine record played on a decent sound system would turn heads.
  11:15am Ochre Ogre:

I think Wild Honey Pie is just Paul doin that old-timey thing.
Avatar 11:16am bobdoesthings:

lest we forget Ringo's paintings.. www.ringostarrart.com...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:16am Rich in Washington:

I usually think it's a breech of etiquette to post youtube videos on show chat, but whenever I think of Ringo these days, I cannot stop thinking of this: www.youtube.com...

  11:16am Dean:

Yeah, but a third of ATMP is Layla outtakes.
  11:16am Kelly:

Gaylord!!! You're not really taking a break....you're just making us work harder to hear you! No more lazily tuning in Sun. afternoons....now we've got to hunt you down! :o)
  11:17am llid:

Gaylord I still remember your show about Beatles solo goofs
  11:17am Dean:

"Girls School"!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:17am coelacanth:

i used to go out with someone who (fashionably) "hated" the beatles and everything connected to them. one day she was orgasming with excitement, telling me about this song she heard, "mother", by X. (the good X, not the one from ca.) -especially raving about the primal screaming on it.
she had a rough time one day when i gave her a mix tape opening with "mother" by Lennon.
Avatar 11:18am PKNY:

Gotta roll w/ Gaylord on "Imagine".
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:18am Rich in Washington:

@bobdoesthings: Jeez, Ringo. For almost 2 grand, can't you at least spell check 'Elephant'?
Avatar 11:19am βrian:

Wait, I thought Ringo skied into a tree...
Avatar 11:19am PKNY:

@Brian - that was Sonny Bono
  11:21am Sam:

Nothing personal, but the association of "cool" with subversive and dark is to me something that I have started to question, though I have most of my life held to it.
  11:22am Marcel M:

Great show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am Greg from ZONE 5:

Good tune.
Avatar 11:22am βrian:

But wait, isn't Sonny Bono that U2 guy ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:22am coelacanth:

Ringo was solid. never flammed; perfect timing and steadiness. (unlike Moon & Watts & many other famous drummers who fucked up often)
he also had perfect feel and discretion. with a different drummer the beatles may not have made it- or at least as big.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:23am Andrew Waterloo:

there is a terrible of trend of making things 'darker' as a short cut to making them more profound
  11:24am Dean:

You're thinking of Ali Campbell, @βrian.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:24am Greg from ZONE 5:

@Andrew: AGREED.
Avatar 11:24am Jeff:

This whole segment has been brilliant.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:25am Greg from ZONE 5:

@Jeff: AGREED.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:27am Gaylord Fields:

@Ochre Ogre: That's "Honey Pie" (no "Wild" — two separate and unrelated songs with similar titles). Das Damen's "Wild Honey Pie" (heard earlier) is pretty faithful to the original.
Avatar 11:29am Chris from DC:

Space Lady!
  11:29am llid:

You take a dreamy-faced crooner, an intellectual hardass, a genuine spiritualist, and a dart-throwing pub bloke, all of middling talent, but who happen to bring out the best in each other, and you have the pop equivalent of life on earth. It just shouldn't be.
  11:30am Marie:

Such nice melodies in this song
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:31am coelacanth:

"honey pie" is probably pretty close to Paul's true nature - or at least his roots; "wild honey pie" is Paul trying to show that he too can be wild and crazy, and maybe "avant garde".
Avatar 11:32am Seanbelly:

You've made your point! Enough beatles! Ahhh!
  11:33am llid:

coelcanath, Paul had plenty of wild side, see his recent stint with the remains of Nirvarna
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:33am Greg from ZONE 5:

There's an entire Trojan box set of Beatles covers.
  11:34am matt:

Ha ha paul is such a WIIILD AND CR-
Avatar 11:36am Miss Mailas:

Gaylord! Just tuned in now to this pleasant surprise.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:37am coelacanth:

llid, i will check that out. i wouldn't doubt that he's more adventurous now than he's ever been.
...he had some rock n roll in him in the early days, but when pushed to really let loose it was pretty (very) contrived. (i.e. "i'm down" and " long tall sally"...and "kansas city hey hey"...one of the worst songs ever recorded by anyone!)
  11:39am Ochre Ogre:

Ah right Gaylord, I stand corrected. Missed you last Sunday at 5:00. Great show Chris!

  11:41am llid:

colecanath, helter skelter covers "wild paul" for me
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:43am coelacanth:

i love helter skelter, and it's pretty badass; but Paul's original plan wasn't quite as wild as what it ended up being. (i like the original version too though.)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:47am coelacanth:

shit, i missed what song Gaylord was talking about.
-for me it's "hey jude". i always skip it; but i Love Wilson Pickett's version.
  11:47am Dean:

"Till There Was You" Heh heh.
Avatar 11:48am Chris from DC:

Will always love the Husker Du take on Helter Skelter.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:48am coelacanth:

till there was you: not a beatles song.
Avatar 11:49am Megadano:

I fully endorse this episode and the premise behind it. Even though I missed most of it and will have to dig it later in the day. ThankS CHRIS!
  11:50am Dean:

Waddya mean?! It's on Meet the...! All that's missing from that album is an instrumental interlude of "76 Trombones"!
  11:50am llid:

HATE Beach Boys, but that movie last year was wonderful
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:51am coelacanth:

damn... i don't always appreciate Gaylord's pop sensibilities, but we see each-other regarding the beatles.
(i despise most beach boys music though!)
Avatar 11:51am βrian:

The Beach Boys are too saccharine and inorganic for my ears. And I love cilantro.
Avatar 11:51am Chris from DC:

Never clicked with the Beach Boys at all.
  11:52am Dean:

Ravi friggin' Shankar. 'nuff said.
  11:52am Jeff:

Speaking of songs which break your brain in a way which ends up having a lasting effect: that's what happened the first time I heard The Shaggs on the radio (probably in 1979).

I initially HATED them - the song (My Pal Foot Foot, I think) seemed wrong in every possible way, and even kind of threateningly, corrosively wrong - but I couldn't stop thinking about the song, and what it was about it that annoyed me so.

I couldn't stop thinking about it.

And eventually I embraced it, and the power of how its "off" timing resonated where it collided with my expectations.
  11:54am Ochre Ogre:

"Hey Jude" cover by Wilson Pickett is of the charts, but, I think it did as well or better on the charts as the original.
Avatar 11:54am Cheri Pi:

Heya Gaylord!

And as for those Beach Boys - eww. Nearly everything they did which was super-popular just seems retch-inducingly insipid to me. And often casually sexist.

Great show, thanks! I always hated "Hey Jude." (Was a big Beatles fan as a kid, then hated them for a while, then started appreciating them again)

I hate the fool on the hill, and ITA with Mendes. I can smell burning chicken fat whenever I hear it.
