Turning over the toy box and jamming together the gloriously mismatched musical Lincoln Logs, Legos and Tinker Toys from Tin Pan Alley pluggers, pickled egg tavern weepers, lockstep soul ensembles, skinny-tie power poppers, Eurotrash ravers, moontanned art school rockers, drunken soccer anthems and anything else that seems like a good idea at the time. There are no guilty pleasures.

They play this song before the Preakness Stakes every year. I think it's the state song. And it kinda sounds like O Christmas Tree.

Great old Newman!
  1:05pm Dean:

Gotta be Nina Simone next.
  1:07pm Marie:

I have to say that I have never liked Randy Newman and find it hard to understand why so many people seem to. One clear criticism I have is that i think his songs are too long (not to mention that I think they are all kind of lame and depressing). Just my opiNion....
  1:09pm Dean:

There are no wrong songs, only wrong...something. Oh, yeah: There are no wrong songs, only wrong aphorisms.
  1:11pm Dean:

Apropos of next song, this just in c/o NYT: "A federal judge blocked — shortly before it was to take effect — a Mississippi law that would have given special protections to those who opposed same-sex marriage."
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:12pm Alex In Illinois:

I thought that the Presidents of the United States of America are from Seattle, WA.
  1:13pm Dean:

Kerry Livgren's not in Kansas anymore?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:13pm Webhamster Henry:

There's a sameness to Randy Newman's material - but check out Harry Nilsson's Newman Album.
Avatar 1:14pm βrian:

@Alex: They're from the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:15pm Uncle Michael:

Kerry is in fact not in Kansas anymore. He prefers to remain in Kansas.
  1:16pm Dean:

I suppose it's fair to say that Randy Newman is an acquired taste. I haven't fully acquired it, but a friend from high school was a fan then, and I trust his judgment, particularly respecting the early stuff. Sameness, though, isn't damning. Unless you're Rush.
  1:17pm Dean:

Well, then, glad I saw Kansas when Livgren was in Kansas, rather than after he left for Kansas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:19pm Uncle Michael:

Kerry stopped doing much secular music...then he had a stroke. A connection?
Avatar 1:19pm coelacanth:

this song=the wise choice!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:20pm doctorjazz:

I've always been a Newman fan, which isn't to say I love every track he puts down, but when he hits, he really hits, at least for me (sometimes he does get too obvious/direct). Hey, I love Neil, but can't say I love every song or album he's done, either.
Avatar 1:22pm βrian:

Newman used to give me the pip. Now, I enjoy his humor. Same for cilantro. I can't get enough these days.
Avatar 1:22pm geezerette:

Howdy Howdy fellow Amerrykins!!!
Avatar 1:23pm coelacanth:

my older brother liked Randy Newman since i was little. i've had much opportunity to acquire the taste, but i don't think it's happening! i always thought he was clever but i just don't like his singing.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 1:23pm Uncle Michael:

Avatar 1:23pm ndbob:

I have mixed feelings on Newman - some I like , some I don't, but best in small doses

Next up, The Beatles. "Misery." (Or Flamin' Groovies same.)
Avatar 1:25pm coelacanth:

hmm, i shouldn't just say clever. sometimes his lyrics are very powerful, in fact -though often shrouded so some folks don't see it.

Avatar 1:29pm βrian:

"Ar-Kansas" still works for me.
Avatar 1:29pm 67tele:

@Brian: I love that expression "give me the pip". There were times it would have saved me quite a bit of grief if I'd just said "you really give me the pip" instead of what I did say.

  2:15pm Dean:

I need to watch that, geezerette. Rodney is an odd duck, but he sure did make LA an interesting place in the '70s and '80s!
Avatar 2:18pm geezerette:

Yep Dean! A great local DJ and character. The famous booth at Canter's where he held court. I need to watch it too, haven't yet.
Avatar 2:19pm βrian:

Will the Twins proceed alphabetically?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:21pm Webhamster Henry:

@geezerette - yeah I saw that documentary - Rodney is the Rodneyest!

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:22pm Alex In Illinois:

Well now if you are including fiddle or banjo tunes, you get a lot more named after states. You can add a few more to the Oklahoma list like Oklahoma Waltz, and Oklahoma Redbird. But, I think the states having the most fiddle or banjo tunes named after them are Georgia and Arkansas.
Avatar 2:23pm ndbob:

I think so Alex
Avatar 2:28pm ndbob:

not too many North Dakota songs - the only song I know of that mentions Jamestown - where I lived - is the North Dakota version of "I've Been Everywhere"
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Alex In Illinois:

The last few people from Puerto Rico who spoke to me about statehood said that there is 1 contingent wanting state-hood, 1 contingent wanting complete separatism as I n nationhood, 1 that wants things to remain as is, and another group that does not seem to care. And that as long as he nationhood and statehood groups each represent less than 50% of the population, there will not be any change.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:30pm Uncle Michael:

There are that many towns in North Dakota?
Avatar 2:32pm ndbob:

quite a few UM:) don't see it on YT tho
Avatar 2:33pm βrian:

When I toggle the terrain feature on and off, in Google Maps, ND doesn't appear to change.
Avatar 2:34pm geezerette:

Sing it, crazy cowgirl!
Avatar 2:35pm βrian:

I mean, it offers no relief whatsoever.
Avatar 2:35pm ndbob:

@Brian there's actually a huge difference - when you get west of the Missouri River, it totally changes within a few miles - it suddenly becomes very arid and rugged
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:36pm Rich in Washington:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:37pm Uncle Michael:

Rich! hahahaha
Avatar 2:37pm βrian:

West of the Missouri? But thar be monsters!
Avatar 2:38pm burke:

Are the Missouri Brakes exclusively in MT or are there some in ND too?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:40pm Rich in Washington:

I was wondering how the state I am in would get it. I just checked in to see that (although I've been listening since the beginning).
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:41pm Uncle Michael:

I couldn't let you down.
Avatar 2:41pm geezerette:

Antique auto tune!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Alex In Illinois:

James McMurtry mentions South Dakota in the chorus of a song on his most recent album. Wait, I can look it up... that's actually the title of the song. But, that is not North Dakota.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Rich in Washington:

You could not. Ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:42pm Mike East:

anybody know if its okay to put hot liquid in the wfmu water bottle?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:43pm Uncle Michael:

I would presume so...if you open it carefully when hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:45pm Mike East:

cool...been using it for iced coffee, but this morning, I didn't have any already cooled down coffee so I dumped hot coffee in, then realized some things aren't meant for hot.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:46pm Mike East:

...and to your point, after getting nervous that I fucked up the bottle somehow, I opened it and it spit hot coffee out all over because of the pressure change.
Avatar 2:50pm ndbob:

excellent show UM!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

Which is why I recommended being careful, Mike!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:51pm Uncle Michael:

Thanks Bob!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:53pm Rich in Washington:

hard to find a high performance coffee bearing vessel.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:54pm Rich in Washington:

the missus and I like those contigo stainless steel cups. They can explosively vent coffee if you're not careful.

Let me promote a new book by a friend of mine. It's about the New Mexico counter culture: https://www.nebraskapress.unl.edu/product/Irwin-Klein-and-the-New-Settlers,677138.aspx
Avatar Swag For Life Member 2:59pm Uncle Michael:

  2:59pm Dean:

No, "counter culture" is not the residue at a greasy spoon diner.
Avatar 3:00pm βrian:

Can't the U of Nebraska Press afford a larger font? Criminy!
  3:03pm Dean:

On the website, you mean? If you're on a desktop or laptop, hold Ctrl and spin the mouse wheel to adjust font size. But yeah, I guess pixels are expensive.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 3:04pm Lewis:
