Favoriting Brian Turner: Playlist from June 21, 2016 Favoriting

Order and disorder in a freeform haze of terribly-played guitars, shorted-out electronics, found audio detritus, strange sounds from strange lands all around. Psych-punk-junk, collage, even pop. Lots of in-studio live performances to boot.

Venom  Live from Primavera Sound, 6/4/16   Favoriting Recorded by BT exclusively for WFMU broadcast    On June 3rd and 4th, WFMU relocated to Barcelona, Spain to broadcast the giant Primavera Sound festival for 18 hours of assorted live sets with no filler. Late in the game, we got the green light to roll down to record Venom, and today on Brian's show you'll hear an exclusive-to-WFMU-only airing of the band's completely obliterating live set, just feet away from the Mediterranean Sea! Formed in 1979 in Newcastle, England, Venom's first two albums sewed the seeds for for countless legions of thrash, death, and black metal combos to follow, replacing technical prowess with pure speed and crude punk approach, all topped off by bassist Cronos' inimitable gargle-with-thumbtacks vox. Today's lineup includes Cronos with guitarist Stuart "La Rage" Dixon, and drummer Danny "Dante" Needham, and they'll be plowing through an hour of classic and recent material with a mix that will, like their beloved Newcastle Brown Ale, knock you on your effing back.    1:33:32 (Pop-up)

This account of the Geri Reig record isn't quite right: http://www.atatak.com/e/assets/s2dmain.html?http://www.atatak.com/e/music/ederplan/531463a1750f05b03.html There most certainly was a BART in 1979, but BART has yet to reach San Jose.

Hey Cecile, I was chatting with someone on Facebook who's gonna be in the TEFL course with me, she's from the U.P. and we were both ragging on Ohio, haha
Avatar 3:30pm
Cecile:

Ohio is a-OK with me. that war was a long time ago.

But where in the UP?
  3:31pm
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

LOL, I brought up the Battle of Toledo too! She's in Gladstone.
Avatar 3:31pm
Cecile:

Ah. Near Escanaba, in the UP's banana belt.
  3:32pm
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Banana Belt?! Surely you don't grow bananas there
Avatar 3:33pm
Cecile:

it's a joke. It's warmer than the rest of the UP. They get spring stuff during actual spring instead of in June.
  3:35pm
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Haha, ok got it. Once it hits 40 degrees it's time to break out the flip-flops, right?
  3:37pm
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Escanaba is the 3rd largest "city" in the UP, with a population of 12,616?! According to Wikipedia

Yep, that sounds about right.

Holy moly, this girl's in for a real change. She says she's never been outside of Michigan and this is gonna be only her 2nd time on a plane. She just graduated from college it looks like.
Avatar 3:40pm
Cecile:

well never being outside of Michigan isn't that big a deal - we have some large cities and whatnot downstate. What's the big deal is if she never left the UP.
  3:41pm
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Yeah, I'm guessing she's flown to Detroit or something.
  3:44pm
Cliff (moving to Prague!):

Wait I was wrong, she's been out of state but this'll be her first time out of the US.

Hey! Not a complaint a question: So I know there were transmitter issues this past week. But something weird happened here in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn on my humble stereo. First, the signal is solid and clean without me having to futz around with the antenna like I usually do. Second, the “WFMU” identifier has shown up on my receiver for the first time in months.

Humidity in the air making the reception better for me? Or some other transmitter fix? Just saying.
