Someone's got a case of the Monday mambos!
Avatar 9:10am Sem Chumbo:

Hiya, Joe, and McGaskoids.
Seems like an awfully long day already, maybe that's just me:-D
Avatar 9:13am Brian in UK:

Hey Joe

@Sem, wait until the PM it gets longer my friend. At least the rain has stopped here. Cue The Carpenters.
Avatar 9:13am bobdoesthings:

goodmorning joe and all.
Avatar 9:17am Marcel M:

Morning Joe and friends. Bob!
Avatar 9:17am Sem Chumbo:

Hey, BrianiUK. hehe.
Had a few words w/ Stanley about his Far East trip. A great time was had.
Avatar 9:18am OTB:

Ay! Late for the mambo!
Avatar 9:22am Sem Mambo:

OK, bring on the Caipirinhas. Why not make the longest day of the year even longer with some morning drinking?
Avatar 9:24am Brian in UK:

Guess we will have blanket coverage of Glastonbury for the next seven days over here. Saints preserve us. Start the mudslide now.
Avatar 9:24am Marcel M:

Oh snap... its the stice of SOUL.
Avatar 9:25am bobdoesthings:

my favorite mambos are the ones where the main occurring lyric is "mambo"
Avatar 9:25am Joe McG:

Mambo, everybody!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26am Guido from Cologne:

Can I ask once more what is the bed music here?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am melinda:

I like the Italian production music.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Guido from Cologne:

I love great Italian production music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:29am Guido from Cologne:

Avatar 9:30am Sem Mambo:

Looking at the Glastonbury Festival splash page, I see drones are illegal there, there's important news about legal highs, and there are tips for those bringing babies and toddlers to the event.
Cripes, where did *anything goes* go?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30am Guido from Cologne:

Yma Sumac ‎– Mambo!
Capitol 1954
Avatar 9:33am Brian in UK:

@Sem if you want Drones go to Bertie Wooster's club.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:34am sphere:

morning. Sem, people forget that the U.S. Army provided food and medical supplies to the original Woodstock. so "anything goes" may be harder to find than we might think.
Avatar 9:36am Sem Mambo:

@BiUK: very witty, Wilde, very witty.
@sphere: you may count me among those who forgot that. I blame the Caipirinhas.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36am Guido from Cologne:

Some more great Italian production music!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:40am sphere:

i love a good Temporary Autonomous Zone as much as anyone, but they are tricky beasts.
Avatar 9:43am Brian in UK:

The original Glastonbury was just a small local affair not the big sellout (in more ways than one) that Woodstock became. Going to the farm to buy milk from Michael Eavis (not brucellosis accredited) no one arriving by helicopter more like an old ambulance.
Avatar 9:44am Brian in UK:

This year Adele arrives on her own twin port dragon. The spirit lives on.
Avatar 9:46am Cecile:

This really takes me back and has that weird melancholy I associate with the 70s
  9:46am Polyus:

Oh man did I have a crush on Marilu Henner back when this show was on. Of course that was like 4th grade.
  9:46am Louie D.:

Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

I couldn't decide who I liked better Alex, Bobby or Tony.
Avatar 9:47am bobdoesthings:

just curious, has anyone did a whole show of tv theme songs before?
Avatar 9:47am Joe McG:

@Polyus: I still do.
Avatar 9:47am Cecile:

I've carried that indecision through my life.
Avatar 9:48am Brian in UK:

Was Taxi the show with Andy Kaufmann in it?
Avatar 9:48am bobdoesthings:

*has anyone done a whole show of tv theme songs before. (grammar!)
Avatar 9:48am Cecile:

Joe, she's still an vibrant interesting women although we will never agree on dairy products.
Avatar 9:51am Cecile:

*now enjoying a tasty Greek yogurt*
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:51am Stevel:

Brian in UK: Yup, also Danny Devito, Judd Hersch, Marylu Henner, Christopher Lloyd.
Avatar 9:51am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Ha! @bob: I did a Single File of TV theme songs once.
Avatar 9:51am Joe McG:

@Brian: Yes!
Avatar 9:52am Cecile:

and Tony Danza and Jeff Connolly and Carol Kane.
Avatar 9:52am bobdoesthings:

@joe mcg- ahh thats fun! I bet it's possible to do a good hour of theme songs. Right now I have the theme song to The Price Is Right as my ringtone. Makes me feel like I've won every time I get a call.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:53am Mike East:

@bobdoesthings - I think I remember Uncle Michael doing all TV themes once...though it may have actually been just an hour...I'll try to find a link to the archive.
Avatar 9:53am Cecile:

I'm sure a lot of people have done sets of them, I'm not sure if they did three hours.
Avatar 9:54am Brian in UK:

We have a cleaner at work who talks like the character he played, for real. He is a big fella which makes it even more fascinating.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:54am Mike East:

ah, no, it was just a set...but a pretty long one: wfmu.org...
Avatar 9:55am bobdoesthings:

@mike east - oh cool! I tried the search "theme song" but didn't see any show playlist that looked like a theme song show.. so gave up
Avatar 9:56am bobdoesthings:

and thanks!
Avatar 9:56am Cecile:

I just got this email from one of our writing instructors. He's a good instructor, but I hate it when he uses classic literature as an example and edits it to be "better".
Avatar 9:58am Cecile:

that's right, this is from Hair.
Avatar 9:59am βrian:

Buttermilk skies over the isthmus today. (Speaking of dairy.)
Avatar 9:59am Marcel M:

....edits classic literature :-O. Don't tell me he'd add in periods and paragraphs to Proust?!
Avatar 9:59am Brian in UK:

Buttermilk make the best scones.
Avatar 10:00am Joe McG:

@Brian: Sounds pretty!
Avatar 10:01am Cecile:

I think he would. I seriously do.
Avatar 10:01am βrian:

Sadly, the cows can't see the sky from their CAFO enclosure ...
Avatar 10:01am Cecile:

Even Strunk and White delights in examples of incorrect literature that is the exception that proves the rule.
Avatar 10:02am Cecile:

preaching to the converted. I won't rant today.
Avatar 10:03am bobdoesthings:

this EE Cummings needs some proper formatting..
Avatar 10:03am Brian in UK:

What was the rationale behind Twitter's 140?
Avatar 10:03am Cecile:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:04am pantz:

Good old Paul Williams. Who has more movie theme songs? Williams or Randy Newman?
Avatar 10:04am βrian:

But *only* EE cummings can get away with the all lower case conceit.
Avatar 10:04am Cecile:

bell hooks?
  10:05am dug:

twitter wanted the message length to fit inside a standard SMS text message
Avatar 10:05am βrian:

Dunno. She didn't speak in lower case when I saw her, but that was years ago.
  10:08am KP:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:08am Andrew Waterloo:

Twitter was originally driven by SMS
Avatar 10:08am Cecile:

this is such a weird ass song to be used as it is currently in popular culture.
Avatar 10:08am Ear Hammer:

Welcome to "Joe's Manipulative Music Monday Corner!" Tears city!
  10:09am Polyus:

Cale is definitely one of those "would listen to him sing the phone book" people.
Avatar 10:09am Brian in UK:

@dug as simple as that?

I live life in uppercase with the odd excursion into italics and mirrored lowercase.
  10:09am Polyus:

Or read it.
Avatar 10:09am Cecile:

indeed, polyus.
Avatar 10:09am Joe McG:

@pantz: Probably Randy! @EH: Ha!
Avatar 10:13am Brian in UK:

It was a Triumph.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Greg from ZONE 5:

Morning, Joe & all!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:16am Parq:

How disappointing. I was hoping for a Dictators cover.
Avatar 10:18am Joe McG:

@Parq: Ha ha ha!
Avatar 10:19am Marcel M:

" Ironically, the song's popularity is partly due to it being misinterpreted as a "driving song", leading it to appear on compilation albums such as Summer Cruisin' and Top Gear (a spin-off from the BBC Television motoring show of the same name)." Hah.
Avatar 10:21am Cecile:

I admire McAloon's craft, but not his envy of people with actual feelings.
Avatar 10:22am Marcel M:

@Cecile: But don't Brits generally envy American's for that reason? ;-)
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

@Marcel: So funny! @Cecile: He's a big-hearted romantic. Otherwise he wouldn't protest so much.
Avatar 10:22am Howard F:

Hey Joe! Nice chill set on the first day of summer!!
Avatar 10:22am Joe McG:

@Howard: Glad you're enjoying it!
Avatar 10:22am Marcel M:

Its funny because the lyrics in the refrain are very clear! haha.
Avatar 10:23am Cecile:

I know this. I'm just not into his particular form of complaining. hahahaha
Avatar 10:24am Joe McG:

@Marcel: I think these kind of misinterpretations are common. Remember when everyone thought "The One I Love" was a love song?
  10:25am melinda:

I would not have expected Paul Simon to cover VU.
  10:25am KP:

If this is that Paul Simon it's the best song he has ever sung
  10:26am βrian:

I thought 4'33" was a love song ...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:26am Andrew Waterloo:

In general people expect pop music to follow specific patterns. The title capturing the sentiment of the song is one of them.
Avatar 10:27am Cecile:

no, it's the sound of silence. Better than the song.
Avatar 10:27am Marcel M:

@Joe: True! Another fairly obvious one, too.
Avatar 10:28am Joe McG:

@Marcel: Or "Every Breath You Take."
Avatar 10:28am Marcel M:

Yeah but he had the GarFUNK with him on that one.
Avatar 10:28am Marcel M:

@Joe: Play this: www.youtube.com...

Clay Pigeon will like it :-)
Avatar 10:30am Marcel M:

Ah yeah the stalker theme haha. Another good example.
  10:32am Tommi Adderal:

All this is OK but how come you never play any Lala Brooks type stuff, maybe at least a cover or something.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:37am ! I X Key !:

Avatar 10:38am Joe McG:

@Tommi: Ha ha ha! By the way, Gary Glitter also covered "Then He Kissed Me."
Avatar 10:38am Cecile:

this arrangement already makes the song better because they have absolutely no clue.
  10:39am melinda:

Damn, I missed the Taxi theme. Joe you're right about forming early impressions of NYC from TV. I didn't figure out until much later that those shows were filmed on sets in LA.
Avatar 10:39am Brian in UK:

No relation to Blackfoot Sue?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:39am Stevel:

Marcel M: Nice cover take. Not watching the video makes it better!
Avatar 10:40am Joe McG:

@Brian: Alas, no. But a couple of them were in Lynyrd Skynyrd at one time!
Avatar 10:40am BEAVO:

This is a cover of Jeff Becks far superior version
Avatar 10:41am Joe McG:

@melinda: You're so right, they're all Hollywood shows. But whoever shot the handful of NYC exteriors did a nice job capturing 70s NYC.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am Andrew Waterloo:

typical 80s epic.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:41am ! I X Key !:

Avatar 10:43am Cecile:

aw, Sadie. She's good.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:43am Parq:

Melinda, those of us who grew up here formed our impressions of L.A. and San Francisco much the same way. Not to mention Cincinnati.
  10:43am trouble:

Avatar 10:44am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Me, too, Cecile! I'm currently rewatching "Barney Miller" and it totally stands up. I'm in Season 7! @BEAVO: There are many better versions than Blackfoot's, but its absurdly epic quality appeals to me.
Avatar 10:44am Joe McG:

Trouble! We miss you! :)
Avatar 10:44am Cecile:

it does! It's still weirdly underrated, even though it lasted a long time.

I always joke that I'm the pink-collar Sgt. Dietrich.
Avatar 10:47am BEAVO:

I actually like he first Blackfoot lp with Train Train.
Avatar 10:47am Joe McG:

@Cecile: Fun game is to see which detective you most identify with. I always felt Nick was my man.
Avatar 10:48am Cecile:

I can see that!

I still see Gregory Sierra on things and yell "Chano" every time I see him.
  10:48am melinda:

Barney Miller was another great one. When I was younger I thought Mary Tyler Moore and Bob Newhart also lived in NYC, it was all the same city to me.

Avatar 10:54am Brian in UK:

@Sem did not say it was the right understanding.

@Cecile gor blimey that's us to a T and if we leave Europe this week we will up anchor and float across the sea to visit you folks and set up shop off Florida like they did five hundred years ago. Alvar Nunes Cabeza de Vaca rules.

@βrian pea shoots are tasty little morsels too.

  11:30am rw:

I made a pretty delicious tangerine and ginger marmalade a few weeks ago from my neighbor's tangerine tree and store bought ginger and sugar. Only two jars left. Wish I had enough for everybody.
  11:30am KP:

Joe, do you remember when the sales staff at Mannys Music became Dire Straits, led by Knopfler of course?
Avatar 11:30am βrian:

@rw: Yes, please.
  11:31am rw:

Passive sauna... hmmm... need to look into that.
  11:31am Tommi Adderal:

"You don't give a DAMN 'bout no trumpet playin' band...." That's the last think I remember saying to the bouncer.
Avatar 11:32am Joe McG:

@KP: Before my time, KP! @Andy: I agree! It still sounds good to me. The rest of the first album, not so much.
Avatar 11:32am Sem Mambo:

hehehe, @Tommi.
Avatar 11:33am Brian in UK:

The first album was as exciting as the sleeve.
Avatar 11:35am Joe McG:

@Brian: Ha ha ha! None of their records are 100% good (or even 75% good), but each one has a track or two that is very good.

Guitar Steve can play the lead.

(needs a bit of work)
Avatar 11:37am Brian in UK:

Joe think you have summed it up. So why were they so popular? Who knows. Who cares. Someone has to be popular.

Rejoining the throng. I see that there was a thread on Zappa a bit back. I saw the trailer for the new Zappa doc ("Eat That Question") at Film Forum yesterday, and it looks like, well, pretty much exactly what you would expect.
  11:38am melinda:

Brian there are some farmers here in Maine growing ginger and turmeric too. The fresh ginger is quite pretty.
Avatar 11:39am Joe McG:

@Brian: I don't know! He played guitar nice (but not as nice as Richard Thompson), sang a bit like Dylan, wrote a few nice tunes. Why "Brothers in Arms" is one of the best-selling albums ever is a puzzle to me.
  11:39am Andy the painter:

@Joe: whaddya mean? " in the gallery"?!!
c'mon! or you just don't like pub rock songs about the art scene in late seventies Britain?!
  11:40am Dean:

I'm partial to "Telegraph Road."
Avatar 11:41am tonyb:

i blame "miami vice"
for the pop. of "brothers..."
Avatar 11:41am βrian:

Ginger is an essential staple in our house. So much so that we keep our shopping list beneath it.
  11:41am Andy the painter:

great set, joe. had not heard steve gunn before. I think it's my scene and it's freaking me out!
Avatar 11:42am Joe McG:

@tonyb: I think you may be right! @Andy: Ha ha ha! I love that soundbite.
Avatar 11:44am Brian in UK:

@Andy see him live if you can, acoustic or electric. No messing. You set the scene.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 11:46am Carmichael:

@Joe: What, you mean no Alice Cooper?!
Avatar 11:47am Brian in UK:

Great show, Joe. Time to walk the dog.
Peaceful week, everyone.
  11:48am Andy the painter:

@Brian in UK:thanks for the tip.....

I think mr knopfler listened to a lot of jj cale in the seventies
Avatar 11:48am Joe McG:

@Carm: I'm not sure I understand! @Brian: Thanks, have a nice dog walk!

Thx so very much, Joe. Been great, and catch you next time!
Avatar 11:53am Wild Neil:

Peace all. Joe, I will SECOND your comment about Brother in Arms being a big big mega hit...I thought it was the worst Dire Straits album ever...its like somebody told them to make "catchy tunes you can hum"...it was so...DUMB.
  11:54am Cooh John:

Good day Joe. Looks like I missed Johnny and the Hurricanes. So you know much about them?

At this point, Joe, I just keep discogs up on the other screen and spend my morning getting my moorings on all this stuff you play. Your show is "deep" and rewarding every week and ya make me proud.
  1:39pm Joe McG:

Thanks for the nice comment, Will!
