Sounds ripped from cassettes & CDs found in immigrant-run mom & pop stores. Deconstructed icons. Field recordings. Sonic mayhem from the far corners of the internet.

Inspired by Charles King's ridiculously entertaining book on Istanbul between the two World Wars, we'll play some of our favorite Turkish tracks, mostly from the dozens of CDs we've collected over the years from Uludag Video in Brooklyn and elsewhere.

Hi Gary and y'all.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:09pm

Evening, RevRab and Alex!

Seyyan makes an appearance in Charles King's book -- in a chapter titled "The Past Is a Wound in My Heart"

nice set Gary!

Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...as I often think - a different kind of Soul Music...stuff like this Suzan Yakar just works for me...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:30pm

Some of it is painfully soulful (in a good way)
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:31pm

Very soulful. Almost heard a tarzan yodel in there.
Avatar 7:33pm
Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

- a pre-microphone idiom, for certain...
Avatar 7:34pm

this is some heavy stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm

RevRab, the photo that precedes "The Past Is a Wound in My Heart" is of a woman singing -- using a megaphone

After a cursory search, I think that Music of the Balkans was at least at one time a product of FM Records, a Greek label that appears fairly vibrant these days: http://fmrecords.net/label/
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:43pm

Hi, Dean! Yes, it is -- I have it as part of a three-CD box set, FM Records is on the packaging
Avatar 7:51pm

ah Roza
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:51pm

This is also from FM ... Roza Eskenazi was Greek, born in Constantinople
Avatar 7:53pm

yep Gary - the big exodus fro Turkey into Greece - and Roza was Jewish too - as were a few Rebetiko singers

My maternal grandfather might have taken that route. Nobody in the family is quite sure...
Avatar 7:58pm

excellent first hour Gary! catch the rest on the archive

Night, Bob!

Doug Schulkind:

I'm about two hours into a six-hour job copying files from a backup hard drive after my entire digital library crashed and burned. Thanks for helping to soothe my terror-drenched evening, Gary.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:48pm

Hyde! Doug! Holy bejeebus, Doug -- this is why I have TWO backups
Avatar 8:51pm

@Doug yikes! i have two bakups too for this reason and most stuff i still burn to dvd because i'm ultra paranoid (even those are a lousy long term storage medium. i just can't help myself.)
Doug Schulkind:

Well I have one physical backup and one cloud backup. Still terrified. Terrifried, actually.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:55pm

What was it that crashed, Doug? Your computer? Or external HD?
Doug Schulkind:

External HD.
Avatar 8:59pm

i gotta move everything to the cloud too. i've been cheaping out because money is tight at present, but that is sheer idiocy on my part.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:00pm

I am deathly afraid of the cloud
Avatar 9:03pm

i don't trust the cloud because it isn't even a cloud, it's just racks and racks of metal and silicon!
Doug Schulkind:

You're not helping, hyde.
Avatar 9:17pm

heh, my bad!
Anne P.:

Love this record.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:21pm

Hi, Anne! You and me both
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:26pm

İbrahim Tatlıses's first album -- he sounds very young to me b/c most of what I have is from the 90s & 2000s
Doug Schulkind:

Such soulful sounds, I say about every Bodega Pop Live selection ever.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm

I judge all music by the same scientific system: How hard does it make me cry after 2 beers?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:30pm

enjoying the music tonight.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:32pm

i Love this track by Gülen.
Avatar 9:35pm

@Gary do have a weepometer that measures that scientifically?
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:39pm

Avatar 9:58pm

amazing, thanks Gary
Avatar 9:59pm

how can it already be over? oh yeah, i was really late. thanks for the show!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 10:00pm

Brian in UK:

Gary, time differences forces me to miss the show but I thought you might like to see some images by Ara Guler that evoke an Istanbul in the past.
