This is where all of culture and all of time are collapsed into one seductive portal and viewed through the panoramic lens of the exotic. Come and embark on an armchair-travel virtual-voyage to the heart of timeless darkness and beyond; embrace the numinous monolith of the exotic immensity. Let us find that place where hybridization meets its destiny as pure fantasy. Let us become observers observing those others who are ourselves. You wear your mask and I'll wear mine.

Avatar 7:11pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:12pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:18pm Flash Strap:

ooooooooh yeah there it is
Avatar 7:28pm Flash Strap:

Leave it to Laurie Anderson to really bring it to gendered nouns in such a way
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:33pm Doug Schulkind:

As a teen, my wife rode horses. She and several friends from inner-city Chicago spent all their free time at a stable just outside the city. Every once in a while, some of the folks who owned horses at the stable participated in fox hunts in the countryside. Real old-school affairs with the red jackets and the hunting dogs chasing over hill and dale. Another young woman from Illinois, about 10 years older, who also participated quite seriously in the fox hunts: Laurie Anderson.
Avatar 7:33pm Flash Strap:

whoa

whoa
Avatar 7:34pm Flash Strap:

that's wild information there Doug. fascinating backstory
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:38pm Doug Schulkind:

The important thing to get out of that story is... how cool it makes ME.
Avatar 7:39pm Flash Strap:

well, yeah. skeptics take note: Doug is completely actually cool
Avatar 7:42pm Flash Strap:

she really does seem like she has participated in the ethnic rituals of the America aristocracy, and found them all highly amusing
Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:45pm Doug Schulkind:

On the nose, Flash Strap.
Avatar 7:45pm Flash Strap:

Carmichael, I'm starting to suspect you killed all the other commenters on the way in here. Or did you lead them into the woods and abandon them?
Avatar 7:51pm ndbob:

nice first hour Evan - I'm still alive;)
Avatar 7:51pm Flash Strap:

anybody heard that new Dylan track yet? or the album, rather?
Avatar 7:52pm Flash Strap:

Avatar 7:53pm hyde:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 7:53pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 8:14pm geezerette:

Avatar 8:15pm coelacanth:

the underground calls him "the organizer".

Avatar 8:16pm ndbob:

hello coelacanth and geezer!
Avatar 8:17pm Flash Strap:

in the figure below, we see rare imagery from one of these "organizations." Curiously, no organs of any kind are on display
Avatar 8:17pm hyde:

this is an amazing version of Summertime, and also apropos as i sweat in my cabin
Avatar 8:17pm geezerette:

She took that bone broth diet much too literally.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:18pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:30pm Doug Schulkind:

I got pulled away from my screen before I could say this...

Oh my lord, that Dave "Baby" Cortez version of Summertime was miraculous.
Avatar 8:30pm ndbob:

Avatar 8:30pm geezerette:

Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

@Doug: I saw but almost didn't even pick that one up the other day, and I'm so so pleased that I did. What a treasure
Avatar 8:32pm coelacanth:

Avatar 8:32pm Flash Strap:

thanks, g.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:33pm Doug Schulkind:

Avatar 8:33pm geezerette:

coel, 8:28, haha! (dry laugh) :D
Avatar 8:33pm Little Danny:

I could listen to you doing three hours of organ bizness, Evan. Wonderful sounds.
Avatar 8:33pm coelacanth:

Avatar 8:35pm coelacanth:

Avatar 8:39pm geezerette:

coel your secret is safe with me. She sort of compensates with enthusiasm though. And so much energy!
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:39pm melinda:

A Patricia is the only cumbia song in my collection, I think, and I love it. I should have gotten the whole album.
Avatar 8:41pm coelacanth:

yeah, g - especially for a dead chick!
Avatar 8:42pm Little Danny:

Thanks Flash! Honored.
Avatar 8:43pm hyde:

from the did you know department: A Taste of Honey was co-written by Bobby Scott, who also co-wrote He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother
Avatar 8:43pm Flash Strap:

Huh! Hyde with the knowledge!
Avatar 8:44pm coelacanth:

that IS interesting!
Avatar 8:44pm geezerette:

Beautiful, never heard this before. :)
Avatar 8:47pm Flash Strap:

Credit where it's due: I only know this record because Doug played it as bed music a ways back. So goooooood

@Melinda: both the Los Destellos albums are pretty great. Good place to start into some cumbia for sure
Avatar 8:49pm Flash Strap:

i mean Da a amn
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:49pm melinda:

I also like Peggy Lee's version of Taste of Honey but Herb's was the first I heard. I still have the family cassette of Tijuana Brass Greatest Hits from at least 1980, and it sounds fine.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:50pm Doug Schulkind:

Finally we get to hear that number all the way through.
Avatar 8:50pm coelacanth:

we had an awesome electric psych-cumbia band in my town for a while, but unfortunately for me the main person went back home to peru.
Avatar 8:52pm geezerette:

So goood to hear all this wonderful jazz.
Avatar 8:52pm Flash Strap:

Not that you can hear it much, but this is an early Coxsone Dodd production, featuring several future members of the Skatalites
Avatar 8:53pm coelacanth:

okay, i Love Peggy Lee enough that when i hear her's the Billy Vernon version may get toppled.
Avatar 8:54pm coelacanth:

...and i do love Herb Alpert's.
...never mind everything i've said so far.
Avatar 8:55pm geezerette:

Evan,interesting!
Avatar 8:56pm Flash Strap:

Just last week, Danny played a track off this record, and I was lamenting that I didn't have a copy of it. One turned up, halleluia praises be. love Ralke's bongo stuff
Avatar Swag For Life Member 8:56pm melinda:

Interesting bit about the skatalites.
Avatar 8:56pm geezerette:

It's great!
Avatar 8:58pm geezerette:

Also a fan of the Skatalites. :D
Avatar 9:00pm Flash Strap:

Last Bongo Madness track, i promise
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:01pm melinda:

I'm enjoying the bongos.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:03pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Great set.
Avatar 9:04pm Flash Strap:

Thanks Wabbit

Avatar 9:09pm Flash Strap:

I don't want to seem like I'm brown nosing here, but I just keep picking up Yusef Lateef LPs and wouldn't you know I just keep having my mind completely fucking blown by them
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:10pm Doug Schulkind:

Yusef is the closest thing to a rabbi I ever had.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:11pm melinda:

Enjoying the Yusef too.
Avatar 9:12pm Flash Strap:

Well Doug that's why you're the greatest man currently alive
Avatar 9:13pm hyde:

hehe, brown nosing is a ok if it results in more Lateef
Avatar 9:13pm Flash Strap:

this is the most rollicking paean to humility of all time
Avatar 9:14pm coelacanth:

yeh this is huge! i never heard it before.
Avatar 9:15pm coelacanth:

(the Yusef)
...but this is Extraordinary as well.
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:16pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

...how did she fit Yma Sumac into that little box w/ the antennas - ?!?...
Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:17pm Doug Schulkind:

Yusef plays a theremin on his 1966 album, A Flat, G Flat and C.
Avatar 9:18pm Flash Strap:

I have not heard that and I wish to
Avatar 9:20pm geezerette:

Gorgeous "Summertime" version.

Yusef Lateef one of my favorites too.
Give the Drummer programming is better than any Jazz show on LA radio.

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:35pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar Swag For Life Member 9:36pm Revolution Rabbit Nov63:

Avatar 9:39pm Flash Strap:

I am no judge, it is left to others to decide your fate, be it turd or vodou sniffer
